TheHeretic -> The Ground Floor (5/23/2008 8:43:07 PM)

Friends, our political differences often come to the top around here, but I come to you this evening with a proposal I hope will achieve a broad, multipartisan base of support.  Let Americans remember that we are first, and foremost, Americans.  Let us remember that we are a people of shared culture and values, and show our unity of purpose with what I bring for tonight.

It has been too damned long since I had a 3-day weekend.  I'm well accustomed to holding odd opinions, but I think I might be in the mainstream on this.

I propose we begin a campaign for a new, national holiday honoring....  Well, we'll figure out what we're honoring later.  Maybe a sub-committee.  What matters is that we honor it on the second Monday in April.  No religious figures allowed.

For those concerned about the cost, perhaps the time has come to drop Columbus Day.  Nobody gets it off anymore anyway, and the Italians would be as welcome to a floating holiday as the Irish are in March.  Maybe we can come up with "the REAL ML King birth certificate, proving he was actually born on April 10th, and just move that one.

Happy 3-day!  It has been too long.

Of course!  Holiday or no, it would still be a day of the week.

If there is beer what do I care on which day you decide to celebrate a dead Man's birthday ?

Do as thou wilt, I do not even celebrate my own birthday.

Found a couple quick options.  We have Joseph Pulitzer on April 10th, (for Free Speech Day?), or Thomas Jefferson on April 13.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: The Ground Floor (5/23/2008 9:40:27 PM)

I say Jefferson, it will be easier to garner support for it...

though wither works, as Ill be too drunk to care

I quite like that, actually! We could focus on different themes different years, which would keep things fresh.

Not sure I'm ready to give up Columbus Day, though.

Termyn8or -> RE: The Ground Floor (5/23/2008 9:43:31 PM)

Dr. William Pierce, 9/11. How's that for a kick ?

It's perfect.  Monticello ties right in to the home improvement weekend theme, and for those who are going to make it a spring fertility party, there were the Paris years.

Gotta agree with Asher on this one.... Jefferson will definately be easy to garner support for, as something seperate from the catch all of "President's Day" - just appeal to their "American Spirit" and mention that it's an excuse to take a day off, go fishing, and drink a lot - every redneck in the country will jump on the bandwagon.

Hmmm... come ta think of it... everyone who likes an excuse (ANY excuse) to drink heavily and throw a "legitimate" party will jump on the bandwagon!   Reason to go to the lake for a 3 day drunkfest... definately count me in....

Arbor Day or Earth Day might also have possibilities.

Or how 'bout tax day?
