Finally fulfilled a Xmas promise yesterday for the 'kids'. We got notified that there was a shipment of Wii arriving this week. We, foolish old people that we are, showed up 30 minutes after the store opened on Thursday and the welcome clerk looked at us as if we were from Mars when we asked if they had any left.

Our 20 somethings were very disappointed when we came home empty. So we gave them a challenge; we told them if they found a store getting another shipment and went there early to wait in line  - we'd show up with the cash to pay. Proving the younger generation can be smart, and show initiative if properly motivated; they called every Best Buy and Circuit City in the South Bay, spoke directly to management and found a store that said 20 Wii were going to be on sale Sunday morning. They woke up at 7:00am  went to Krispy Cream and waited for the store to open at 10:00. They reported at 9:00 they had the 'golden ticket' Wii voucher.

When we showed up they had a basket of accessories and games. The Wii was cheap, extra controllers, guns, games were where the money went. I had to add to the collection with the Tiger Woods golf and MLB games.

I'll tell you - its as much fun as everyone says it is. Bowling IS bowling, complete with shouting and 'High 5's' for strikes. It was so realistic I was looking for the light switch to call a waitress to order some Buffalo Wings & beer! Good thing I had a slave handy to handle that request. Golfing is also very good from the basic sports package. I can't wait to try the Tiger Woods version. Us old folks went to bed before Boxing and some of the other games like Xena and 'Guitar Hero' were loaded.

We woke to find a collection of kids, kids friends, and games strewn around the floor in front of the TV. I think the next step is to upgrade the big screen with the new LCD technology.

We'd love to get recommendations for any games. Are there any 'lifestyle' versions where the controller is used as a flogger?

Meanwhile, beth and I are going to sneak in some bowling practice before today's Memorial Day tournament.

There comes a time when the whole "stand in line before the crack of dawn" marketing scheme completely backfires.  How long has this system been on the market now?  Are they trying to cash in on nostalgia for the USSR?

I had every intention of buying a Wii for Christmas last year, but when they told me the conditions of the purchase, the Xbox 360 looked just fine.

Agreed - It seems counter productive to me. Technology being what it is - this will be obsolete by this Xmas. My son was tying to explain that Nintendo was near bankruptcy and didn't have the manufacturing capability to meet the demand. However I'm surprised that it has taken until May to get this new batch out there.

I don't think this will last. However yesterday, as was the case Thursday, if you didn't get there early, an hour as opposed to Xmas when you had to live in a tent for days, you didn't get one.

I don't think its marketing - just poor planning and bad management. Although beth would do it, I can't imagine waiting in line to spend money for ANYTHING.

Congrats on getting the Wii. We've had ours for a while now and it's great fun. Mario Kart is the game I'd personally recommend, and if you can shell out a little more financially, then get the Wii Fit as it's even more fun to do.

As for 'lifestyle' games... check out this link:

For those that are into watersports. Beth could see how good her aim is!    A third-party company is considering releasing a pole-dancing game, complete with motion sensing pole... I'm sure we can see where this is leading lol

I still have my old Playstation 2.  I thought about buying the 3 when it came out, but I am not paying that much for a gaming console.  I'm glad I didn't.  Everyone I know that bought one said it wasn't worth it.

We still have our old PS2, we did consider upgrading to the PS3 but I was determined to get an Xbox, then the Wii hit the market and I opted for that instead. I am more of a pc gamer, so really it is only the wii fitness that interests me. Once I upgrade my pc I'll be getting Assassins Creed.

I haven't bothered with the game consoles since the original Nintendo became obsolete.  There were never that many games out for any of them that I was all that interested in anyway...

Georgiapeach, you can download old nintendo 64 games via the Wii and play them on that console.

You can put a Nintendo emulator on your computer to play the old games too.  I have one on mine, and I have a few emulators for old DOS, Atari, and Commodore 64 games.  I love the old DOS games.  A lot of them are Freeware or Abandonware and you can download them for free.

My boys love their wii, which they've had for over a year now(they also camped out with friends and a chaperone to get it, and enjoyed it immensely) but they also like their xbox, neither wanted to go to the PS3. Ive enjoyed playing on the wii, (mario and sports )  but Im sticking to my dslite, its the perfect size, and games are easy to get :) Im not a gamer tho. I leave that to the boys.Suduko, Mario/donkeykong and various puzzles are my hunger.

Oooh, I enjoy suduko too! Funnily enough, when it became a recent crazy I mentioned to someone that it used to be featured in a puzzle book I used to get monthly, so after a little digging I found it in Puzzler.

I was addicted to Oblivion, but had to download my game recently as I messed it up (that's what happens when you try and cheat! Serves me right, too! lol). I also enjoy first person war games such as battlefield and call of duty, but they're greatly limited. As an act of desperation I'm thinking of going back to WoW. My employer was telling some colleagues about her weekend playing the wii and I thought, "My god, how sad!" only for my second thought to be, "Shit, that's my life she's describing!"

LOL Dc, my mom(75)  just upgraded to the ds lite from the game boy, and is begging games for it, oh and she tells me shes getting a laptop soon, cos her pc is a pain in the arse to sit at all the time. She got an ipod for  her  birthday and has  all her 30s 40s and 50s music on it, apparently she stopped dancing  her way to tescos, only cos the next door neighbour was worried she was gonna fall over. gawd bless her.

We must be related!  My old lady was the one who taught ME how to text via a mobile phone after she'd had one a whole year before I ever did! To make matters worse the minx has tight leather trousers and stillettos in her wardrobe - she goes for the olivia newton john (grease) look, lord help me! She has recently expressed an interest in getting the Wii ("I'm sick of normal tv, I want excitement")...

I wish there were kinked games for the Wii!!  It is a fantastic system for physical games.  I am not really into other video games unless I can build or decorate.. and of course I adore the old nintendo VEGAS DREAMS.. but most other games after donkey kong left me cold.  But the Wii.. it is excercise without the tan.
I never camped out for anything but I am glad I stumbled on the Wii on the shelf.
According to gaming sites the reason we in the USA get the short supply is that we don't make the company enough profit.  Overseas people are willing to pay higher prices so game consoles get shipped there priority, leaving us the smaller supply of leftovers.
Money talks.
