ORIGINAL: celticlord2112 quote:
This shit isn't even high school - it's grade school. Actually, it's just tactical reality. Foregoing an effective class of weapons for some ephemeral altruism only engenders defeat. Like it or no, ridicule, done right, can be quite effective at undermining a political opponent's credibility. I wasn't talking about the ridicule - I understand that. I was talking about the whining. It's become a staple of political discourse. "They're doing it, too! Stop picking on us!" is becoming the unofficial national motto. The bit I quoted from you - "Democrats dont do it so why should the Republicans?" isn't ridicule, it's whining. "They're doing it, too" isn't a very good justification for much of anything. What it says is "We're no worse than they are." I'm willing to believe that's true, but it's hardly a ringing endorsement, is it? You go on with this - "Kind of like how the Dems continuously pound on McCain for the "100 years" comment even though he was taken out of context responding to a idiotic question. We dont hear about the media bashing Obama....instead every person on the news today is defending Obama. The obvious liberal bias in the media is disgusting." There's the "Stop picking on us!" part of the whining. Of course the D's are pounding on McCain, just like the R's are pounding on Obama and Clinton. Both sides take things out of context - it's easier to find things to ridicule when you do that, and as you say, ridicule is an effective tool. As for liberal bias in the media, anyone who looks around can see that this is ridiculous. There may have been a time when the media leaned left, but it's certainly not the case today. And yet the whining continues... There's plenty of whining on the other side, too. I find it pretty annoying no matter where it comes from.
