Is the study of the psychology of society a benefit to mankind or quite possibly our worst possible nightmare ?

We all seek to label others, is this a natural thing for us to do, or has this interest come from psychology ?

Is the psychology profession only existing to create a requirement for itself ?

I'm noticing a definite recurring theme with your posts lately and have to wonder what is fueling all of this curiousity.

That I have yet to discover myself,

But maybe the realisation that the society we have built up is serving no other purpose than to create division and fragment us further.

Are we nothing more than ' Butterfly collectors' ?

Rule -> RE: Psychos (5/31/2008 5:28:59 AM)

It will be of benefit to humanity eventually. It is a very young science (first being recognized as such in about 1990), so we may not expect too much of it at present.

Why would the study of mental processes be our worst nightmare?  If I have to think of nightmares caused by 'ologies, psychology is pretty far down the list.

Why do we feel the need to study our mental processes, perhaps to understand ourselves, but then the question, why do we feel the need to understand ourselves, an answer maybe,  so we know where we fit in to the world around us, but why do we need to do that, why cannot we just exist ?

My feeling is, when we have finally rid ourselves of the age old stupidity of differences based upon gender, race, religion and sexuality, well, not so much sexuality, as that was something the emerging psychiatry profession of the 1900's chose to define, we will have yet more little boxes to divide ourselves and argue about.

That being, will humanity ever evolve into anything more than a society based upon segregation ?

atursvcMaam -> RE: Psychos (5/31/2008 6:36:35 AM)

If used as an aid in understanding one another (or ourselves) it could work out as a benefit.  The concern, and inclination, is that this develops preset limits without concern for individual tastes and abilities.  Am i the same person as i was in my 20's?  Some of the "labels" might remain the same, but how i deal with things is considerably different.

Good lord! three questions in a row! Well, Im picking and choosing. I vote for this one..." Is the psychology profession only existing to create a requirement for itself ?" and my answer is, if they've patterend themselevs after the US government, then the answer would be a resounding YES! lol

In all honesty?  No, we probably won't ever "evolve" past a state of classifying those around us based upon various criteria.  Only the criteria will change, as they have over the millenia several times.  There have always been "little boxes" that one was placed in by another - we simply (as a whole) didn't call them "little boxes" - castes, social classes, and divisions based on such have always existed where there have existed societies that desired some sort of uniformity amongst it's population.  Which is to say within all societies.

It's not necessarily a Bad thing, when kept in proper perspective.  It is simply another form of Judging - it is in human nature to make judgements, about everything around us, period - it's how we Form our preferences, our likes and dislikes, our opinions.  I get a giggle out of those who say they "never" judge - they're either lying to themselves in the worst way, or they are so bland and opinionless as to have an utterly meaningless existance.  We, as humans, have a natural desire to associate with each other, and an inborn preference to associate with those who are similar and complimentary to us in some way.  If there were no "boxes" - how would we determine (even on a subconscious level) who was complimentary as opposed to detrimental to our views and preferences?  Or perhaps your desire to do away with All such classifications means that, on some subconscious level, you desire us all to be just alike in our thoughts, deeds, experiences, and preferences.  It would be a very boring world indeed, if we all had the same tastes and preferences, the exact same experiences - even the exact same advantages, because then none of us would have an opportunity to Excell, either.

I've taken a couple of social psych courses - along with things like The Psychology of Abnormal  Behavior (loved that one, I was the token "freak" in the course lol), Criminal Psychology, Child Psychology, Psychology of Human Sexuality (another eye opener where I was the token freak).

we study the mind for the same reason we study the body. Your post asks "why can't we just exist?"
Feel free to do so. Unless you are deemed a danger to yourself or to others you do not have to deal with the science of Psychology if you choose not to.

But on the flip side...why study the human body? Why can't we just "exist"? Again..you certainly can. It may be a short existence...it may be one filled with pain and/or medical issues that render you helpless, but medical help, in most cases, is your choice.

kittinSol -> RE: Psychos (5/31/2008 7:52:56 AM)

Is the study of anything a benefit to mankind? Of course it is! It's nothing new. Montaigne's philosophy is based on introspection.

Whether we look outwards towards the universe, or inwards within ourselves, all knowledge is good.

I don't know Kittin, I would disagree that all knowledge is good.  Some isn;t - some just makes life more confusing for those who are looking to deep.  Sometimes the more we know, the less we really understand.

kittinSol -> RE: Psychos (5/31/2008 8:27:04 AM)

We can sift through information and find a place of comfortable simplicity if we wish to, but knowledge is there for the taking should we want it.

I understand, from what you are saying, that you're addressing a more spiritual issue than what I was touching on. In the end though, I'm not convinced that there needs to be a dichotomy between spirituality (simple, zen, serene) and scientific and philosophical knowledge (questionning, challenging, disturbing). They can coexist.
