        I don't know that trying to understand the "why" of certain behaviors equates with stuffing people into little sub-groups with convenient labels.  Psychology provides a framework and vocabulary for such comprehension, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

RCdc -> RE: Psychos (5/31/2008 8:34:34 AM)

Absolutely they can co-exist.  But I don't place the thought only on the spiritual though.  I think science, fact can be just as damaging in various situations, just as much as 'enlightenment'.  Knowledge may equal power, but it can also lead to downfall.

And that's deliciously anachronistic [:D] !

LotusSong -> RE: Psychos (5/31/2008 8:40:05 AM)

Like it or not.. we are all easily categorized.  Even "un-labelable" is a label.  If one feels they are so special as not to be labled... "special" is therefore a label.  I think it boils down to..if you like how you are labeled.. its ok..if not..it's a  "box".

BUT.. if you are constantly identified by the same dreaded box.. maybe it's because you ARE the definition of said box.  Boxes can either be seen as a starting place of change or a goal.

I'm noticing a definite recurring theme with your posts lately and have to wonder what is fueling all of this curiousity.

That I have yet to discover myself,

But maybe the realisation that the society we have built up is serving no other purpose than to create division and fragment us further.

Are we nothing more than ' Butterfly collectors' ?

So you're pissed at the world and want somebody or something to blame it all on... and today you picked psychology.  Lovely.

And sometimes it is easy to blame others.  And harder to move on oneself.

Obviously true and good advice to the OP.

SohCahToa -> RE: Psychos (5/31/2008 9:34:26 AM)

People hate to think their human behaviour is predictable.

MadRabbit -> RE: Psychos (5/31/2008 12:05:47 PM)

That's a narrow-minded way to look at it.

People have been labeling each other long before psychology came around.

I suppose if one uses psychology and projects it exeternally in an arrogant attempt to deciper and understand the internal workings of other people, it can be limiting and a negative tool.

However, when I read psychology, I use it as tool for internal insights about myself and not to reduce people into calculated and linear stick figures of my design. The same way I use philosophy.

I think that a lot of people have a biast ignorance against the metaphysical in general.

Maybe it just goes over their heads.

Is the study of the psychology of society a benefit to mankind or quite possibly our worst possible nightmare ?

By and large, the study of human behavior through psychology, sociology, anthropology, etc has been beneficial.  Are there researchers who abuse their knowledge and power?  Yes.
But that is true of any scholarly pursuit or profession.

We all seek to label others, is this a natural thing for us to do, or has this interest come from psychology ?

It is a natural human instinct to label behaviors and other people. Human nature abhors chaos and searches for patterns in order to understand life and feel more secure.

Is the psychology profession only existing to create a requirement for itself ?

No

Bethnai -> RE: Psychos (5/31/2008 6:31:33 PM)

Social pyschology or the psychology of society is wrong from the get go.  There is a reason that profs tell undergraduates to study either psychology or sociology. Psych deals with the one; soc with the group.
Psychology has become the worst nightmare.  Memory suppression put people in prison. Memory suppression got a blurb in my psych 101 textbook that did not discount that theory or mention any problems surrounding it. Omission is a bitch.   Janet Reno, in Florida, used psychologists who created false memories for children and that put people in prison and if I'm not mistaken, they are still in there today.  That was something like 10-20 years ago?
When ADD came out, we found that male youth were overdiagnosed for being wiggle worms. They are still attempting to diagnose those at the age of 4. They are now publicly saying that bipolar has been overdiagnosed.  On top of all of this, we now have new diagnosis that are being made for what is called EH, or Emotionally Handicapped and ODD, or Oppositional Defiant Disorder. It may not seem like a problem until one feels its direct impact.
This creates two problems, the inability to fit this mold could land any youth in a "special education" setting.  Do not think for one moment that it won't follow you for the rest of your life. Especially, now that legislation has made it possible for any employer to check into that background.
Secondly, rather than address problems at the core, people/youth have become the scapegoats with does nothing more than allow specific systems to continue to operate in a manner that is biased and discriminatory without any real repercussions.

Alumbrado -> RE: Psychos (6/1/2008 1:39:44 AM)

The things in your post have more to do with bureaucracies abusing power, which they would do with or without borrowing psychology's labels or techniques...

If there were no ADD, educators would cram kids into some other pigeonhole like 'wilful' or 'non-conformist' to avoid doing their jobs the harder way.
If there were no recovered memories, lazy prosecutors would concoct some other method of getting the numbers they wanted without going to the trouble of actually solving every crime.

Why would we need to "study" it in the first place?
Sounds like people with "degrees" in psychology trying to get govt. money because they don't want to work at Home Depot or Starbucks.
"Oh sure, I'd be willing to "study society" for $65k a year instead of working at Starbucks for $25k a year!"

But without all those "conditions" a lot of people in the lower economic spheres wouldn't be able to get "coo coo checks" every month for their kids at $480 per.
