Probably every jurisdiction has loosely worded animal cruelty laws and it often depends on the law enforcement officer and the complainant. If your particular sheriff goes easy on you, you're likely fortunate.

Around here we have wild pheasants and we have a lot of feral cats that destroy the pheasant nests, and pheasant meat is tasty so I control the cats with my .22 rifle. Even without the pheasant meat to consider, if I didn't control the cat population I'd have wild kitty cats up to my elbows, but I also know enough to keep knowledge of that activity to myself.

Unless you're a certain neighbor of mine, and unless you know exactly where to dig... I doubt that I really have any kind of real bean spillage problem. It's only that fresh feral feline carcass combined with the lonely cat lady who lives nearby that could cause me any real problem... and what she doesn't know will never cause me any grief.
