I don't know about Africa but the US is the major exporter of weapons and those weapons are ending up somewhere. A lot of them go to the middle-east though. Iraq is becoming a major importer, how nice to know some of that money spent on the Iraq war can be recouped by arms sales to the new and improved/approved Iraqi government. If you don't sniff the stench of immorality in that you are not bothering to look because you don’t want to.

As I previously said war is business.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arms_dealer#World.27s_Largest_Arms_Exporters

We are the largest arms exporters, but we are definitely not the only ones.  Russia, the U.K., Germany, and France are all in the top 10.  So it's absolute nonsense to blame us for all the worlds problems.

The arms aren't the problem, foreign policy is the problem.

Former British politician Dennis Heally got it about right when he said, the legacy of the British Empire is football and the term 'Fuck Off!'

The legacy of the American Empire will probably be Micky Mouse and the term 'suicide attack'.

The British were stuborn and thought they were doing the world a favour and so does the US. The British weren't then and the US aren't now.

that could be workable... and maybe a better deal than what we got now, but what would we do with all the soldiers we got doing full-time now? we cant employ all the civvies we got

Someone would have to make all the extra uniforms, MREs and weapons for the reserves.  Perhaps we could employ people doing those jobs.

what, and not import them? blasphemy

actually, after some thought, if we could get companies to bring the outsourced customer service jobs back here, it would all work out...

For defense, we have a militia with 200 MILLION guns. That's more than all the largest armies put together. Invade us? Haw haw haw haw good luck.

We have DHS keeping us safe with color alerts and airport idiots.

There's the Coast Guard, for when Al Queida or drunken Siberian fisherman cross into our territorial waters.

Ok regarding the slam on the Coast Guard.... Someone obviously doesnt own a boat. The USCG does a hell of a lot more than deal with drunken Siberian Fisherman. The provide port security, they maintain aids to navigation, they provide search and rescue, they do drug interdiction, they provide safety inspection of vessels, they license crew and document vessels, they clean up oil spills, they provide firefighting and damage control to hazarded vessels. The Coasties are arguably the busiest service, that sees the most danger even in Peace time. When I take my boat out fishing on the gulf or I fly over water it is god damn reassuring to know that even if the forecast was wrong and there are 80 kt winds and 30 foot seas, that SeaKing with the orange racing stripe will lift off from Ellington Field and somebody is going to jump out of it and swim over to my ass.... All it takes is one call on Channel 16 on a Marine VHF or 121.5 or 243.0 on an aircraft radio and they WILL come no matter what...

As for the rest of the question the answer is you would be dead. Because without the US Military defending us, those who will gladly come in and occupy us will dispense with you in short order. You have made MANY references in this forum to the use of psychadelics and other controlled substances... This particular form or recreation is highly frowned upon by countries like China, North Korea etc..  So, the occupation force would come and you would either protest, or speak against them, or sit back and enjoy your mushrooms until they kicked your door in, knelt you down, shot you in the back of the head, and then billed your family for the bullet they used to kill you with. (As is done with Chineese executions, the family buys the bullet)

As for 200 million guns... Useless for defense. The average cop cant hit anything with his first magazine much less untrained civilians. Ammunition would be a problem as there is no standardization of calibers. I could just see a firefight where someone is yelling "Hye ya'll anybody got any more 22 Hornets? Nope but if ya'll got any 243 winchester pass em down this way... 200 million guns will also not defend against carpet bombing so without SAM's, AAA, Attack Helicopters, Fighter Pilots, etc the 200 million armed civilians would be SLAUGHTERED. Even Army and USMC infantry would be slaughtered without close air support.... He who controls the skies, controls the battlefield...

Edited to add - the standardization of calibers thing mentioned above is a really big issue. While I have over tens of thousands of rounds in my gun safe...  I only have 40 rounds (theree boxes) of .458 Lott. I have 40 rounds of 30-30 winchester, and I have 60 rounds of .338 Win Mag, Not exactly going to repel an invasion with those three...

Thank you, John, that was lovely.

So, just, you know, THEORETICALLY SPEAKING, what if the US had hardly or no military at all?

For defense, we have a militia with 200 MILLION guns. That's more than all the largest armies put together. Invade us? Haw haw haw haw good luck.

We have DHS keeping us safe with color alerts and airport idiots.

There's the Coast Guard, for when Al Queida or drunken Siberian fisherman cross into our territorial waters.

Maybe we keep a skeleton crew to launch a couple hundred MIRVed nukes, but that's trivial.

SO what do we need a military for?

Oh yes, because a militia is highly trained to drive tanks, fly choppers and jets and manuever a several hundred ton Naval carrier.

I think in that little fantasy world, we'd be invaded and destroyed within a week. I don't care how many "guns" you have when the enemy starts a bombing campaign with jets and tanks......not even the 'coolest' handgun or rifle can save you.

I'm not talking about a barely trained militia.  I'm talking about an organized and trained reserve force.  Everyone would have basic training and monthly drills just like the guard and reserves do now.  There would be a tiny contingent of full timers around to keep up the training and the paperwork.
When you look at how many reservists and guard members are serving overseas right now, I'd hardly say that they would be an ineffective force.
And, if you refused to serve, you go to jail.  If EVERYBODY has to do it then there is no excuse for getting out of it.

Apparently, you've never been in the active forces and seen your reserve counter parts.

I was in afghanistan when the commander/commander's staff changed hands to a reserve unit out of Ohio. The XO looked around the room and said "wow, this is the first time I've been on active duty."

I just shook my head and prepared for a bumpy ride. I got it too.

They aren't called "weekend warriors" for nothing. One weekend of "drill" and two weeks a year is NOWHERE NEAR the necessary amount of training for combat situations. Yeah, I went through basic and my follow on "job" training. That lasted a YEAR before I got to the "active" side of things. Another year is how long it took me to go from a "basic level" in my job to an "experienced" level. And I didn't even have a combat job either. You simply cannot do what you need to do with an 'all reserve' force.

That's not even to mention the hundreds of thousands of those weekend warriors who would "suddenly" have a problem with war......forgetting the fact that they signed on the dotted line and have NO choice.
