Despite having to rely on java, i have grown fond of a chat room here and another one on a different site.  IMHO, chat is mainly for fun; yes, i learn stuff but if i were in research mode i would just be using a search engine.  i like making chat buddies and playing around (i don't mean scening).

What do Y/you think chat is for?

I use IRC very frequently, and if you don't know what that is, it's basically where a server or servers is set up, and different people connect to the network and can chat on there, and it's popular because of the different clients you can use, etc.

Anyway, I primarily use IRC for help I need on computer stuff, because a lot of knowledgeable people hang around on places like Freenode where you can learn a ton about different stuff.

Not only that, there are virtually IRC networks for almost everything you can think of...TV shows, movies, etc. so you can choose any one of those, find a popular place with many users, and interact with them there. Many people all over the world chat on IRC, so usually they run 24/7.

So sometimes it's helpful to find help in real-time from an actual human being instead of waiting for an e-mail response from tech support, or trying to find the answer to a hard question that a search engine won't understand

A good chat/IRC Channel is basically for the same things you'd use any given forum for, except that conversations are much faster than they would be on a forum.

So basically, what it's "for", is for talking to a bunch of people at the same time... Ideally all people that you want to be talking to, of course.

(Of course you can do other things through IRC or whatever that you couldn't do on a forum generally [like file transfers etc.], but yeah)

To talk to friends.  Although I seem to e-mail back and forth better than I could ever handle a chat.
Most of the time I'm not sitting at the computer I come in and out a lot.  A chat room wouldn't work well
for that.

Although I can see it good for research to.  It tells you the people to avoid.  All of those with too much computer lingo...the sub sofa type of people.  Just sort of tells you that they have been online wayyy to long.
How much real life experience could they possibly have?

As was mentioned, you can get to them via any normal IRC client... I lurk in four of them myself. (Since I already have X-Chat open for a couple other servers, I figured I might as well, heh)

(But maybe they should have something officially stating that (some kind of FAQ or what have you), letting people know they don't have to use the Java client... unless there is one somewhere that I didn't see.)

Fnord.

Chat is mostly a way to alleviate boredom and procrastinate.

I have never liked chat rooms. AOL, Yahoo, these...I just don't like them. The java chats here are horrible and it's annoying to have to open IRC just to access them.

But I do at times, mainly just to lurk and people can click my ad and if they like, they can message me. Since I don't like chats in general I find the open "cybering" and horrible excuse for "RPing" I've seen in the collarme chats just totally barf worthy.

"i spank u"

"my penis gets hard and i spank moar"

Yeah...totally gets me wet...

i disagree, sub4hire.  Just because P/pl 'play' in chat, with 'subbie sofas' and 'Dom-o-Loungers' doesn't necessarially signal to me that T/they have no real life D/s experience.  i don't see what one thing has to do with the other...some P/pl are just kinda witty or silly in chat.  i enjoy T/them, usually.

My only real complaint about chat -- especially here -- is that there are a lot of 'wankers'.  i get PM'd quite a bit by Men (or 12 year old boys, who really knows?)  who want to cyber.  i hate cyber and i dun react well to this.

Another chat room i like on a different site has no PM function, and i kinda prefer that.

Yanno i love ya, sub4hire.   Just because we dun always see eye to eye doesn't change that.

Stopped here in the thread so someone is probably already addressing this later, but the chats ARE on a server on irc.  The server address is www.collarme.com. You just have to manually add the server to the list.

i've never been in an aol chat room.  Yahoo has become just horrid, with nothing but bots...i would never consider going.  My favorite chat room is on another site, and most of the P/pl i'm F/friends with there know each other in real life and have frequent get-togethers.  It's not local to me, but slowly i am meeting some T/them myself, and so far, T/they are just as delightful in real life.

P/pl have told that, back in the day, there were good chat rooms on msn, but that's before my time. They're all gone now.  Too bad the Yahoo chat rooms dun blow up too.

i'v made good F/friends in chat.  It's one of my main reaons for going.  It's been so long i've known some of T/them, i forget we met in chat unless i'm reminded.  Some i've met later in real life; and most i have spoken to.  (Ya, Skype!)

i dun see any difference between making F/friends in chat and doing it on the boards...and i have done both.  i now have F/friends all over the country and all over the world whom i would never have had the priveldge to know had it not been for 'net things like chat and the boards.

i appreciate the help, kc692, but i have conceded defeat when it comes to IRC and mIRC.

i had a really patient, knowledgable Friend try hard to teach me how to use them, but i just could not understand what in the world He was talking about...and i never got the darn things to work.

i suffer through java to get to chat here.  It prevents me from seeing profiles and has other deficits, but (most of the time) i can get it to work, so i'm good.  Mostly i just wish it didn't take so freaking long to load.

i'm a confirmed technotard.
