"Best Foods To Eat Organic" By Victoria Spencer

"The Best Produce to Buy Organic"
EWG's list of the produce most likely and least likely to be contaminated by pesticides draws on data from nearly 43,000 tests collected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration between 2000 and 2005, according to the EWG Web site. Fruits top their list of the most consistently contaminated produce, accounting for seven of the top 10:

  • Peaches. According to EWG data, 96.6 percent of peaches sampled were found to contain detectable pesticides, the most of any fruit or vegetable studied.
  • Apples. Researchers found 50 different kinds of pesticides among the apples sampled, according to EWG data.
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Imported grapes
  • Pears

Organic beef is good, too, if you don't mind the higher cost.

    Thanks

not sure if this counts, but I only eat organic Ice cream... not because im worried about getting sick, but because of the lower sugar content it seems to have

SilentTigresss -> RE: "Best Foods To Eat Organic" (6/1/2008 6:34:58 PM)

Also, organic greens, for a salad are quite tasty, along with tomatoes.

Aileen1968 -> RE: "Best Foods To Eat Organic" (6/1/2008 6:37:55 PM)

I try to eat only organic fruit and veggies.  Also eggs, meat and chicken.
Dairy products too.  It's expensive to eat organic, but most supermarkets are getting better in their selections.

Vendaval -> RE: "Best Foods To Eat Organic" (6/1/2008 7:00:25 PM)

I purchase organic when finances allow.  In this area we have a range of choices; the local farmer's markets, some natural food stores, a locally owned natural food coop, weekly deliveries from the Ag Dept at Cal Poly and some of the super markets carry their own house brand of organic products.

The quality and taste difference is quite noticeable in certain products and less so in others.
I do not notice much difference in the taste of organic bread, but do with the milk and produce.

We had to temporarily swear off of organic milk among other things.  The cost was just outrageous.  We are hoping to get a cow this year to help with that problem.   Of course that means I will have to teach the rest of the family how to milk the damned thing.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: "Best Foods To Eat Organic" (6/1/2008 10:32:08 PM)

I've always heard that canned tomatoes were more nutritious than fresh ones.  But I do love fresh tomatoes.  We have a pretty good farmer's market here, and their prices are reasonable.  As far as meat, I would love to just buy exclusively from the butcher here.  But I just don't have the money to do that.

meatcleaver -> RE: "Best Foods To Eat Organic" (6/1/2008 11:57:00 PM)

You will find far more carcinogenics on organic food than other foods.

    However, they are ORGANIC carcinogenics.

I'm not against organic farming because it doesn't deplete the bio-diversity but it does that at the expense of production and without any added value to the consumer. The other thing is, that the food that the organic lobby complains about has helped to vastly increase the living expectancy of a great many people around the world, not lowered it as the organic lobby would have us believe. There are plenty of tests that contradict the test in the OP, I was going to post one but when I googled there was so many I thought it pointless.

Organic food is a middleclass fad and luxury and has no real place in solving the problem of food production, in fact it adds to problems with no real return.

i see organic stuff and i wonder if it really is organic or just a ploy to charge more money.....

sub4hire -> RE: "Best Foods To Eat Organic" (6/2/2008 7:07:34 AM)

Everything I grow in the greenhouse is organic.  The only exception is the fruit trees that are in the yard...just too many damn bugs.  Last year we had a berry tree..they ate every berry just as I noticed we even had one in the yard.
It was not disclosed when we bought the house.

Aynne -> RE: "Best Foods To Eat Organic" (6/2/2008 9:38:38 AM)

I spent 8 hours outside yesterday turning my 200 sq. ft garden into a 750 sq. ft. garden for prescisely the same reason, cost and healthy eating. It really doesn't take more than a day or two to till and plant a large veg. garden with all of the things you like in it. The flavorless, flown in from SouthAmerica produce at most major grocery stores is not even worth eating. Not to mention the effect on global warming. Even apartment dwellers can do some small patio tomatos and an herb garden.

I invite you to find and view the documentary, "My Father's Garden" and then return here with your thoughts.

    FR~

I prefer getting foods from local farms over strictly sticking to organic produce (although the meats that I buy are organic, grain fed, etc). I have local farms I go to for most of my beef, pork, dairy and I can definitely taste the difference - not to mention being able to talk to the person that just made your butter a day ago from the cows you can see (and smell!) is just so much more emotionally satisfying. Another side perk is that the meats are so fucking expensive that I have cut down on the amount of red meat I eat!

    C~

Maybe if the developed world would quit being such an utter pig with its food consumption (16 oz porterhouse steak anyone?) and was more inclined to share, this issue might be minimised. And remember, organic farming is about sustainable farming, rather than pouring tons of man-made chemical fertilizers on the ground each year just to try and keep it viable.

Trying to understand, why some one would work so hard to build a bigger garden and then move away so quickly. I smell something rotten, hehehe
