ORIGINAL: meatcleaver ...it doesn't deplete the bio-diversity but it does that at the expense of production and without any added value to the consumer. Talk about damning with faint praise... Fruits and vegetables that are grown without pesticides and without commercial grade fertilizers are higher in nutrition and leave the soil perfectly ready for the next rotated crop. The crop is naturally resistant to pests, but perhaps not quite to the degree that we might want commercially - after all, the pests want the same high nutrition from the crop as we do! Ideally the taste is better, the nutrition is higher, and we get the item more as nature intended. Seems like pretty high value to me! And yes, the carcinogens are higher too. Thankfully as omnivores we don't have to eat the same things all the time - we can choose different items every day if we like and keep the variety way up and the potential harm of any one thing therefore way down. The one potential harm in this scheme is that the word "organic" is already riddled with loopholes that allow for the likes of Wal-mart to peddle their wares as organic even when they cheat the concept everywhere but on the labeling. You do not want to pay for a benefit that is not there.
