Prismfire -> How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 12:42:45 PM)

Yes I realize that subspace has been addressed over and over in many different ways on this forum. I'm doing research on something and am curious as to how you know you are in subspace... What indicators do you have? Is it physical? Is it mental? Is it both?

Can you pinpoint the things that are the same no matter what form your subspace takes during any given scene. What stays the same and what changes.

Opinions and input highly appreciated thank you.

Mercnbeth -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 1:54:33 PM)

it has been this slave's experience that "subspace" is an altered state of consciousness, comparable to a trance state, like one achieved through meditation.

some define subspace as that trance
state achieved ONLY through some sort of BDSM means.  this slave has achieved that same trance
state, sans BDSM, frequently through other means over her 35 years before discovering WIITWD. all that changed was the focal point(cognitive object) and the sexual energy experienced.

excerpt from an interesting read:

quote:

"So what is my theoretical paradigm for trance? Basically I claim that the necessary and sufficient condition for a trance to occur is whenever there is a sustained cognitive object loop of sufficient length of time to cause dissociation. A cognitive object is an abstract way to denote a thought, any thought, whether it is a word, an idea, a feeling, a vision. When a set of cognitive objects repeat often enough, you will go into a trance."

subspace, smoking pot, even taking an aspirin, does not affect everyone the same way.  some folks are highly allergic or negatively affected by either, some or all of the three.

this slave would not recommend them for everyone and would encourage everyone to know themselves and prepare for a potential negative reaction to either of the three.

Thank you for your answer I do sincerely appreciate it ... I am curious to know however how you personally experience it, How do you know that you are in subspace yourself? Is there something physically that happens that causes you to know or mentally is the moment definable to you when YOU are in subspace. These are the answers that really interest me.

Also thank you for referencing that article as a hypnotist myself it is a description of trance that I deeply agree with and I look forward to reading the rest of the article.

My voice wont work properly.

hmms thank you ... so a physical reaction? is that always the case or does it change.

it is tremendously hard to describe, but here is as close as this slave can come:

physical sensation is magnified and becomes intensely focused on a particular aspect, implement or body part, to the exclusion of "feeling" all the others---it becomes the cognitive object and could be breathing in and out, the strokes of the crop or the sound of His voice.

flesh is no longer perceived as a hard boundary, but as a flexible conduit for a flow of energy.  this slave's sense of smell is heightened and her hearing becomes incredibly selective.

time ( at least appears to) stands still.

I realise the difficulty of trying to describe this, Your answer was exacly what I had hoped for, Im hoping to get several in this spirit so that I can find physical mental similarities and differences, Thank you so very very much your time is greatly appreciated.

kiwisub12 -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 4:29:31 PM)

I know i am in subspace when the thud of the cane no longer is painful.  It actually feels pleasurable.
I could respond to my Sir but would rather not.
When i am in this state i am profoundly relaxed, and a bit groggy.
I always sleep very well after being in subspace.

Prismfire -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 5:58:26 PM)

Thank you. I can relate to this definition myself.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 6:43:55 PM)

For me it's just that I know it when I know it.  There are many forms of altered consciousness, some of what I have come to associate with the experience and result of what I label as "subspace."

I liken subspace to orgasms- you can get there through any number of methods, it's different for everyone, and a persons experience of it can change from experience to experience.

But is it really that different for everyone, That is the underlying question of this post. By asking people to post how they know for themselves it highlights the similarities and differences, an earlier post spoke about a dominant being able to spot when his or her submissive was going into subspace which leads me to believe there are a specific set of parameters that cross the boundries of personality. Sure there will always be differences but what if its not so different as we think.

In my experience, yes it really is that different.  Also remember many s-types NEVER experience what they would define as subspace, or only experience it very rarely.  While some people can go into it in 5 seconds of looking in their masters eyes every hour on the hour.  I have experienced what I call subspace as everything from a total blackout, to a full out of body experience, to feeling kinda giggly and high and more.  That's just me in a decade.

Smiles, a good point and one I may have to ask about next. I kinda deliberately left the original question unspecific so as to allow for whichever answers people chose to give... I just thought it would be interesting and so far it absolutely has proven to be just that.  On a personal level Ive experienced subspace differently, however there are always similar indicators when I am going into or have reached that space.

I become oblivious to hot or cold room temperature wise... while I can respond it really is just too much effort sometimes, my thinking becomes unclear so when asked to answer a question I will often have trouble with choices. I manage yes and no just fine. The sensation of pain changes. It doesnt disappear but it changes. I lose track of everything but the dominant I am with, his voice and the tools he is using.

These are indicators I can count on..... this is a place when I know I am in subspace... There are other situations where I thought I was just fine and stood up to find that I was far from fine. Was it subspace at that point.. I dont know for sure, perhaps.

califsue -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 9:20:01 PM)

i can't answer the original question as i don't have enough experience but appreciate seeing the topic and the links from LA regarding prior conversations. i felt today that i must be experiencing sub drop and thought i would have to do a search and read up on it. the links helped and though my first experience at least i can identify why and hopefully find ways to minimize the subdrop feeling the next time.

Prismfire -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 9:51:30 PM)

LA's links are always helpful Im happy to hear you got something out of the topic.

leakylee -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 10:11:40 PM)

my subspace is different depending on the sensations. sharp objects, knives, needles, steel, tend to send me into a primal state. my brain kinda shuts down but fights my restraints. i will attempt and or come out of most things i am in.

with whips or canes, anything stingy, with no warm up, i just zone out. a high orbit..hehe.. that is when i am most prone to fall. not able to talk. just zoomy, gone.

thuddy with warm up, or elctro, is a slow build. i do go, but it isnt as deep. i am slightly aware. i can be woken up. it is almost like being seperated from my body. it is also the time that i can enjoy the sensations the most. orgasm from them. least likely to bite.

smooches
lee

Prismfire -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 10:18:24 PM)

LOL at the least likely to bite part. I definately love that you are so well able to articulate the differences in your experiences of subspace by different sensory experiences. Im curious about the primal reaction you refer to is that something that stays primal through the entire scene or is that just your initial reaction... having never experienced something like that inquiring minds want to know lol, Thank you for your reply.

mistoferin -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 10:19:26 PM)

I very consciously help myself into subspace. I focus on Sir's touch, his voice and the sensations he provides. I concentrate on the beat of the music. I close my eyes and focus my breathing. It works best for me when the pain gets to the level that my heart is really starting to race and I imagine myself taking control of my heart rate and breathing. I literally visualize my heart. I visualize the pain as red and hot and I breathe in deeply. I visualize the air that I breathe in as blue/green and very cool. As the breathe goes in I direct it to the area of pain and the blue/green mist envelops the red/hot pain. Some of the red mixes with the blue/green and the red becomes orange/yellow. As the blue/green/cool breath mixes with the red/hot pain I exhale and it carries parts of the pain back out of my body. What is left is a sensation that penetrates and reverberates throughout me and I hone in on that sensation. The rest of the world, other than Sir and myself, fades to black and he and I become very vivid.

At this point I start to see small pinpricks or flashes of light in my periphery and my vision kind of tunnels. I can feel my heart rate and breathing slowing and a serenity starts to overtake me. At this point I just surrender myself to it. Kind of like if you are paddling a canoe furiously against the current and suddenly you just stop and allow yourself to flow with it. That's when I know I am on my way and I just let go and I stop all efforts to process the sensations.

Shortly after that I'm gone and in a post a few years ago I wrote what that feels like to me. Here is a copy of what I wrote then.

quote:

Subspace for me always comes during a scene or at times, it has even been triggered by just really great sex. Externally I am told that it is like this. If I am being scened, when I enter Subspace my body relaxes and goes slack, I no longer respond to painful stimuli, my eyes are no longer focused, my pupils dilate and I get a very calm and serene look about me. I can't really respond verbally at this point. Every touch can generate an orgasm, even a stroke on my cheek.

Internally, it is very calm. It is like being enveloped by a cool mist. Color perception is different and I very frequently see things in shades of purple. Quite frequently there is a sensation of water running over me. There have been times when I can see the room, including myself, as if I am looking down from above. Mentally I am very foggy, kind of like after a good dose of morphine....lol. As I begin to come back down, I generally get a case of the shakes. The world comes back into focus in bits and pieces. I am very much in need of a warm blanket, a good cuddle and quite frequently I am extremely tired, although there are exceptions to that as there have been times when I have bounced up like I am ready to run a marathon, excitedly chattering and giggly. The effects can last for several hours after....sometimes even longer....and it would not be a good time for me to drive a car or operate heavy machinery...lol. Although, I may seem perfectly coherent...sometimes it takes awhile for that fog to fully lift.

Hope this helps....

Prismfire -> RE: How do you know its subspace... (6/2/2008 10:31:02 PM)

What an amazing description! reading it almost put me in your shoes *or feet* for amoment It not only helps but it is exactly what I hoped for.

On a side note for people that have never experienced subspace, have you always been doing this concious assistance of the subspace state can you remember when or how you started. I only ask since LA reminded me that not everyone gets to enjoy this experience and with your writing skills I believe  your experiences with achieving this could help (that is totally off the original question but Im sure there are people that would appreciate it)
