I wanted to teach you - oh,
everything the earth is full of.
Everything on it that's ours for
a wink and then gone, and, what
we are on it.  The light we bring
to it and leave behind us ... words.
Why, you can see five thousand years
back in a light of words.  Everything
we feel, think, know and share in words.
So, not a soul is in darkness, or done
with, even in the grave.
And, I know, I know, that one word
will put the world in your hands ...
And whatever it is to me,
I won't take less.

Ann Sullivan, Act III
The Miracle Worker

Ever read or hear something that just strikes home and you find yourself jotting it down so you never forget it?

The 'signature' at the bottom of my posts was stated by a college English professor.  Jotted it in my notebook and have never forgotten it.

Share your favorite quotations here.  Doesn't have to be from Albert Einstein or Aristotle.  Can be from anyone.

An example to start that seems appropriate here...

"To avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, be nothing."
Elbert Hubbard

Excellent post!

My favorite:

When approached by a reporter from the national newspaper at the time (The Saturday Evening Post)...the USA Today of it's time, P T Barnum was asked "Mr Barnum...does it bother you to be packaged with pickpockets and streetwalkers in the news?  It's often said you hire people to leaden the milkbottles in the baseball toss...that the bearded lady is nothing more than a man who shaves one side....and that you mislead people from one end of the gantry to the other?"....

And he said....

"Madame, it matters not a whit to me what they say, why they say it, to whom, or under what circumstances.....

So long as they spell my name correctly
".

(I love that man )

Ok, this is a poem, slightly a little off track, but i started this, so i'm invoking OP creative license.  It's a gem.

Flight

Like a glum cricket
the refrigerator is singing
and just as i am convinced

that it is the only noise
in the building, a pot falls
in 2B.  The neighbors on

both sides of me suddenly
realize they have not
made love to their wives

since 1987.  The racket
multiplies.  The man down the hall
is teaching his dog to fly.

The fish are disgusted
and beat their heads blue
against a cold aquarium.  I too

lose control and consider
the dust huddled in the corner
a threat to my endurance.

Were you here, we would not
tolerate mongrels in the air,
nor the conspiracies of dust.

We would drive all night,
your head tilted on my shoulder.
At dawn, i would nudge you

with my anxious fingers and say,
Already we are in Idaho.

angelicbitch,

I remember an English teacher say this to a group of us in high school.
I immediately spoke up.  "You know what happened to those guys,
don't you?"  I still remember the stunned look on her face.  She could
not make up her mind whether to be angry I had been a smart ass or
to congratulate me for knowing the poem.
