Mine aren't so much catchy or eloquent quatations as they are 4 rules I've developed through my own life experience.

1.  Don't sit around waiting/hoping for the phone to ring.

2.  Don't waste your time talking to people who aren't listening.

3.  Treat others as they treat you.

4.  Avoid places where you're not invited or welcome.

First dates back to my teen years trying to figger out girls but the rest are current and ongoing but also context specific, esp the last two....

Focus.

my grandmother... use to tell us kids all the time ..... Yours is not to ask why ... Yours is just to do or die..... always made us stop asking questions...

angelicbitch,

I remember an English teacher say this to a group of us in high school.
I immediately spoke up.  "You know what happened to those guys,
don't you?"  I still remember the stunned look on her face.  She could
not make up her mind whether to be angry I had been a smart ass or
to congratulate me for knowing the poem.

Cool.. I just remember my grandma saying it ... we didn't ask why much after that ;)

In addition to my sig line I will contribute the following:

"The unexamined life is not worth living."
Socrates

"One should as a rule respect public opinion in so far as is necessary to avoid starvation and to keep out of prison, but anything that goes beyond this is voluntary submission to an unnecessary tyranny, and is likely to interfere with happiness in all kinds of ways."
Bertrand Russell

"People who keep jabbing saber-toothed tigers in the ass with
a short stick and expecting it to lay golden eggs clearly are not
behaving rationally."  Gordon Jennings

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character,
give him power".
Abraham Lincoln

"Men show their characters in nothing more clearly than in what they think laughable."
 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

"The worst sin - perhaps the only sin - passion can commit, is to be joyless."
Dorothy L. Sayers

"Once we are destined to live out our lives in the prison of our mind,
our duty is to furnish it well."
Peter Ustinov

"In theory there is no difference between theory and practice.
In practice there is."
Yogi Berra

"There are some people who, if they don't already know, you can't tell 'em."
Yogi Berra

Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love
does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Nice to see so much twain on this thread...   :)

My favorite from him is about life in general.... (couched in a metaphor)

"Navigating a river, (or life) is like walking down a darkened hallway at home. Although you feel some fear, you know the no real harm can come to you... because you've made this trip before, in just bare feet, and faith, you find your way to where you are going."

People who talk about revolution and class struggle without referring explicitly to everyday life, without understanding what is subversive about love and what is positive in the refusal of constraints, such people have corpses in their mouths. - Rauol Vaneigem

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world. - Oscar Wilde

I like maxims that don't encourage behavior modification. - Calvin (in Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson)

Everything you can imagine is real. - Pablo Picasso

The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory is that conspiracy theorists actually believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. The truth of the world is that it is chaotic. The truth is, that it is not the Jewish banking conspiracy or the grey aliens or the 12 foot reptiloids from another dimension that are in control. The truth is more frightening, nobody is in control. The world is rudderless.[/i ]- Alan Moore
