mistoferin -> AMISH made BDSM toys???? (6/3/2008 12:14:15 PM)

I was searching through the various toys on E-Bay and came across a whole bunch of paddles, whips and such that stated they were Amish made. What is up with that?

DesFIP -> RE: AMISH made BDSM toys???? (6/3/2008 12:26:16 PM)

Link?

Bread paddles possibly and buggy whips? They may have discovered that they sell well. Although as Old Order Amish eschew use of electric powered items, I doubt the seller is Amish but simply lives in an area where he can buy these items relatively cheaply and has learned that they resell quite well.

Erin, in my geography there are many Mennonite families.  They can make a lot of money selling their craft.  It seems if the word "Amish" or "Mennonite" is slapped on something it can sell for more.  Also I know of a Mennonite family who sells "Amish dolls", I'm not kidding.  These are horse/buggy Mennonites that do not use electricity.

*Fast Reply*

It's possible that the maker was raised Amish and decided not to continue as an adult. Now they've decided to slap term on their products, possibly to add to the "taboo" factor.

..................and you know that sometimes the turn on is enhanced by the very origin of what is being used. That being said, I would much rather be beaten with a flogger that I knew was made by Jessica Alba rather than Rosie O'Donnell.  I saw that also on eBay and would just rather stay clear of those items just because they might just keep me out of subspace. :)

SimplyMichael -> RE: AMISH made BDSM toys???? (6/3/2008 1:29:19 PM)

I have no idea who made the stuff that you are talking about but do NOT think Amish = Quaint...those fuckers don't use electricity, nope but they do use the newest european woodworking equipment and run it off of diesel powered hydraulic pumps...because that technology existed...ain't nothing quait about their production at all.

Didn't the Amish invent clothespins...?

Just sayin'.

I must disagree.

"I HAVE BOUND YOU WITH THE CHAINS OF CERBEROS, AND DRIPPED HOT WAX FROM CANDLES LIT WITH THE FIRES OF HELL.  AND FOR YOUR FINAL TORMENT, I WILL WHIP YOU WITH A FLOG MADE BY ROSIE O'DONNELL!!!!!"

I don't see how that wouldn't be sublime torture.  What's your point?

Hello Erin

I had a scan through, and there are some items sold by the seller which state *made by another amish friend* so I would assume the seller may not be amish.

I don't see a conflict of interests between BDSM and the Amish, just on certain aspects (say using voltage or modern factory equipment).

Emperor1956 -> RE: AMISH made BDSM toys???? (6/3/2008 2:20:19 PM)

FR:  Why would you think being Amish is inconsistent with being into B/D/S/M?   There is nothing in the Amish theology (which is at base conservative mainstream Protestant theology) nor in the Amish "simplicity" code, which would make many aspects of WIIWD unusual.  A fundemental concept of Amish belief is a "submission" to the will of God.  On the submissive's end, how close is that to submission with one's marriage.  From the Wiki article on Amish belief:   "Two key concepts for understanding Amish practices are their rejection of Hochmut (pride, arrogance, haughtiness) and the high value they place on Demut or "humility" and Gelassenheit (German, meaning: calmness, composure, placidity) — often translated as "submission" or "letting-be," but perhaps better understood as a reluctance to be forward, self-promoting, or to assert oneself in any way. "

Indeed, one might argue that in a strongly hierarchical society where power derives from established family or social roles, persons are more likely to import a B/D/S/M "flavor" into interpersonal relationships.  Granted, you are not likely to find polyamorous relationships common (although polyfidelity is not unknown in related Mennonite sects).  And younger Amish are not sexually conservative -- indeed, during rumspringa (the awakening period for older adolescents who are about to decide whether to accept the church as adults), sexual experimentation is pretty much expected (although the major consequence -- pregnancy -- results in marriage and immediate assumption of adult duties.)  Also, given the antipathy to electricity, you probably won't find a lot of electro-sex play.

E.

Owner4SexSlave -> RE: AMISH made BDSM toys???? (6/3/2008 3:05:26 PM)

Hate to break it to you folks, many of the Amish are just as wacked out crazy as we are... perhaps just as bad.

fungasm -> RE: AMISH made BDSM toys???? (6/3/2008 4:38:53 PM)

Darling,

The thing to remember about the Amish Culture is that it is a culture that has tried to avoid the industrial revolution.  Because of they way they have kept their culture, they are many ways a human version of Pre-raphaelist notion: the construct of seeing what would have happened if nature took a different couse.  In this case, the course is "what if Victorian Puritanical Mania had not taken place."  The idea of sex as evil and unpure comes from the diminutive Monarch who ruled the British Empire until the turn of the last century.   Up until then, sex wasn't something you discussed in public, but sex itself wasn't bad or dirty.  It was a private pleasure.  Until Victoria, part of the marriage talk commonly included advice on how to bring your partner to release, as we know by those cases when such advice was dispensed by letter.

A love  of simplicity and a devotion to that which God has given us do not, by definition, mean the Amish are against sex or that which feels good.   It just means you don't talk about it.  It's private, a matter between a woman and her husband.

As long as batteries aren't involved, Amish sex toys are an accepted part of the culture, passed from mother to daughters as they marry or from fathers and sons.  The only other thing which is similar in the culture is menstruation cloths.  No one talks about them, especially to children, but they are there becuase they are needed.  They serve their function without fuss or notice.

Amish sex toy isn't the contradiction in terms like Amish video game.
