Yay phil!!  I have all this peanut butter going to waste over here!

Well, looks like I may need  a walker/scooter/etc. in the near future due to the joint/nerve pain in my feets.  Might also have to work part time so I have time to get treatments, go to appointments, etc.  Hoo boy.  Good times.

I talked to my brother-in-law earlier, and now I just checked my job description and NO WHERE does it say, "Family Activities Coordinator."

Ya see, we are going to go pick apples on Saturday. The other half wanted to invite his brother's family. Fine with me, as I am a 'the more the merrier' type of person for this kind of thing. So, I had him send the websites of the orchards I was considering so that he would have a chance at input. The responses were less than helpful. In the first place, there is a difference between a fruit orchard and a pumpkin patch. Shocking, but true.

So. . . I just called today. To end the frustration.

His mind was STILL fixated on pumpkin patches. *sigh*

I explained that our trip to the pumpkin patch would be in late October not in September. September was for apples. He wanted to know if they would be 'invited' to go to the pumpkin patch.

Last time I checked, they were public places. My invitation was not needed.

We apparently have some butt hurt (I think I am using that correctly) over not being invited on our family outings.

Umm. Okay. Whatever.

Had I known they WANTED to be, I would have made sure an email or phone call was made. FFS, the last time I talked to them was when they were at my house for Thanksgiving. Since I do not hear from them, I assume that they are busy doing whatever it is that they like to do.

You see, as an adult I am used to amusing myself. I figure out what type of activities I think would be nice for myself and for family things. If others want to come, they are welcome. If they don't, that is just ducky as well.

I have just assumed that other adults do the same thing.

I feel better now.

OK all.....this is a rant alert.......you have been warned!

Some time ago, I applied for a customer service job w/a Fortune 500 company.  With the application, I submitted a resume.  The position was in a call center, answering phones for their customer support center.  Now my career field is police dispatching, but trust me, I am perfectly capable of doing the job I applied for.  The "tech support" is based upon reading info off the computer screen.

Apparently, my application had something that the comapny was interested in, as I got invited to test for them.  I qualified based on their criteria.

Yesterday, I went and interviewed with one of the managers.

Today, I get the "Thanks but no thanks" e-mail.  In it, it states that my interview didn't meet their criteria.

And here's the rant......do these places even have HR PEOPLE to look at the apps and attachments?  I jump thru their hoops, drive all over town for them, and for fuck's sake, NOW they tell me I don't meet the criteria?  Trust me, that job is a cakewalk compared to the stuff I do as a dispatcher.....after having three cops shot by someone I'm on the phone with, 2 fatally, someone who can't get their computer to work is a piece of cake.  They have 4 weeks of classroom training for the job, then it's OJT on the floor with staff.  PUH-FUCKING-LEEEEEEEEZE!

Job hunting these days is a total bitch.  There's no one to speak to to ask questions, or for follow up.  Gone are the days of actually walking into a company and speaking to someone.  If you do find someone, they refer you to the company's website, where shit just disappears into the black hole of the web.  I really long for the days of face to face interaction.

OK, I'm done....just needed to blow off steam.  It's just so frustrating for me right now......I'm not even making a freaking living wage, can't even get a second job, and still make too much money for any help.  That's another vent that I'll just not go into.  I know there are folks out there who are worse off than I am, but when it's your ship that's sinking, you aren't paying attention to the other ones around you.

I feel really bad for you Soul.  I worked in a couple of call centers, and what you do now is infinitely harder than any call I ever had to take.  I don't know how they interview anymore, but it's getting ridiculous.  I applied for one job years ago, they brought me in for a 2nd interview because i had apparently "so impressed" the first guy, and the day after the 2nd one I get a letter telling me I'm overqualified for the job, and it was sent out the day after I had the first interview.  So WHY THE FUCK didja bring me back in a 2nd time ya morons?

There's just no attention to detail anymore, customers and employees don't count, it's all based on the bottom line for the company or corporation doing the hiring.  Hugs to you.

Thanks poohbear.....and you're right.....since it's an employer's market right now, they pretty much run you thru a wringer and then slam the door in your face.  The personal touch is gone, and I'm really sad to see that happen.  Convenience and technology seem to be running the show in places anymore.

It still bugs me to think about it, but hey, life is too short, I have a job even tho I'm not making a living wage, my landlord is the greatest!  I'm late with part of last month's rent, and still in the apartment.  I guess he figures it's better to have tenants than "for rent" signs.  Goodness knows, there are too many of those, even in my little neighborhood.  All of his buildings have tenants, there are about 8 that don't in a 500 yard radius to me.

I just hope that the light at the end of the tunnel isn't attached to a freight train!

Soul, you'll find something.  You've got the determination for it.  Just when you think it's impossible, and when you least expect it, something will come along.  I'm kinda happy I don't have to look for a job in this market, I'd pretty well be screwed.  No matter how much job experience you seem to have these days, it's the last thing that counts.  More's the pity, the employers are missing out on great workers who know the meaning of work ethic.  I wish you all the luck and know that my thoughts are with you.

I'm glad I don't have to look for a job in this market also. As stressful and screwed as I am in my present job at least I'm working.

I am glad that I am not working.  I tend to bite peoples heads off if I am in a bad mood (somehow people thinks my phone number belongs to Best Buy in Longview TX.  I politely give them the right one).

Besides dealing with my bipolar, I am dealing with arthritis and fibromyalgia.  MRIs are showing a lump of nerves in my right hip.  I LUV my Vicodin.

What she said....

as poohbear knows I had similar experiences to you recently and right now I am in the awful situation that I decided not to attend two interviews next week due to the job offer I received this week...might sound odd, why I say it is an awful situation, but it is awful as my brain tells me I should go...a la better safe than sorry, cause after all, I don't have a contract yet and don't have the confirmation from the overall manager yet (only from the house manager which will be my main manager)...

anyhow, I simply can't pretend to be interested in these 2 posts next week, when as a matter of fact I am not....and I don't want to leave a bad impression there due to pretending to be wanting their jobs when I don't want them and simply prefer to withdraw my application there for now instead (and if ever necessary get back to them again in years to come).

That interview at that employer last week as well as the hospitation this week was so awesome, it was worlds apart from previous ones...and I know, if I would not have had encountered some really odd managers this summer, I would not have doubts to get that job after the 2 interviews I had (one was last week and one with another big manager was during this week hospitation) as well as after the final talk which I had with the house manager, in which she asked me if I can start on the 15th of october and other plans which she would have with me for november...

So whilst it sounds like a done deal...I nevertheless feel awful that I just cant go to the other two as a matter of "better safe than sorry" and still wonder when the "We are sorry to tell you" bomb will finally drop....after all....we do know that when it sounds too good to be true....

Anyhow, I dare to trust them now (they truly acknowledged even the fact that I worked abroad, something other employers didn't at all and were very pleased that I worked at one of my previous employers, as they have a very high opinion about that one, leaving me thinking "thank god I changed my employer to work for that one during my apprenticeship at that time" so it simply sounded there as "just being the right fit"...) however...the odd feeling remains...when will they come up with "we are so sorry..."...it surely must come

But yep, some are quite pathetic, how they let you run rounds like a hamster and then treat you as the last citizen on the planet...

My advantage, though,  is, that over here the jobmarket is good again, so my situation is slightly different....

Good luck S2S

Firstly, wb to ST who hasn't been around in ages. How you doing? Lizard starting college?

I think phil ought to be beaten. I haz an earworm, old folk song Can She Bake a Cherry Pie incessantly haunting me.

And I think Aylee should turn the tables on her bil and tell him to find and arrange a pumpkin picking trip for the family. And call him up every day asking when and where!

Lizard is trying to get enrolled at ACC.  They have online registration now.  She is also looking for seasonal work to get some extra money for college (I let her get her first heart attack when she sees her first check).

I want to get in good with the munches in Austin but they move it to Parmer Lane...There are no buses in that area that I know of...

I am trying to lose weight but I can eat a slice or two of cherry pie...with whipped cream.

Oh, I do NOT think so. They will receive the same information everyone else will receive. Date, time, location, and website.

I have no patience for calling someone everyday that seems unable to find things for himself to do. I realize that he has been out of work for a bit and the temp job that he had ended. There are still things that you can find to do.

The apple-picking went fantastically. The BIL seemed a bit surprised when other people we knew showed up. But everyone seemed to have a lot of fun.

Butterhead enjoyed riding on the wagon and putting the apples into the bags. She found the first apple and started munching on it right away (the girl LOVES apples). I was able to take it away long enough to get the dust off of it. The cousins were a bit concerned over this and I explained that it was just fine, the orchard people expected that apples were going to be eaten while people picked them. They dealt with it much better when I told the other half to just try one of the apples on a tree to decide if he liked that kind or not. (There were 3 kinds ready for picking.) Once over their shock they found it really fun.

Butterhead's female cousin remarked that the apple she was eating as we were leaving the trees for the "Country Store" was the BEST apple she had ever had.

The duck feeding was a hit. As well as the apple slushies purchased. Butterhead managed to tear her pants on a nail and throughly muddy a second pair trying to chase the ducks into the pond.

We went for lunch afterward and that was pleasant at well. Everyone got a chance to relax and eat and talk before the drive home.

I found it interesting that as the only non-native Kansan, I was one of two that knew that 'pick-your-own-fruit' was something that could be done. Phil was the other person. Although, he decide he was only getting 'pre-picked' apples. He was not able to stay long, his dog was hurt and had surgery yesterday, he picked her up today, and he wanted to get home to check on her in lieu of joining everyone for lunch.

Overall it was a good day out. Much sunshine and walking (and running by the shorter-than-I-am-people) was had by all.

Now, the other half would like an apple pie made with Splenda. Hmmm. . . I wonder if I have enough apples for that?

You misread me, or I wrote it wrong. Make him plan the next outing instead. You hassle him instead of him hassling you.

There are recipes for sugarless apple pies that turn out quite yummy!!! No sugar at all. There are sugars in Splenda, you know.

I understood that. My reply was to show that hassling him would be far too frustrating for me. So I will just make the decisions and let him (and his family) know the pertinent details.

Do you have a recipe? I really dislike the aftertaste from Splenda.

I think the one that I used to use was in the old Betty Crocker cookbook from the 40's. But I found this one online. It uses the least amount of apple juice concentrate & no cornstarch of the ones I found. It uses tapioca instead. I'm not sure what the composition of the tapioca is as far as sugar/carbs.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/sugarless-apple-pie/detail.aspx

When I was a small-town housewife & doing a lot of baking, I would use about 1/4-1/3 the amount of sugar called for in a pie recipe. The result would be a much better tasting pie, IMO. The flavor of the fruit would be much more intense without all the sugar.

But my heritage is Norwegian, & we use lots of butter in our baking, but not a whole lot of sugar. I got used to baked goods that weren't all that sweet & I like them that way still.

I mix cinnamon applesauce into my apples with lots of cinnamon.  It gives just the right amount of moisture to the apples....nothing worse than dry pie!

Yanno, I've heard people talking about the aftertaste in Splenda, but I've never tasted any.  I've been using it in baking ever since it came out, I can't use sugar because of the diabetes, and Splenda is a sugar alcohol, and not supposed to make a difference in your blood sugar.  Of course, I've been using the pink and blue stuff for so long that maybe I'm just used to it.  And as far as the taste of my cookies...well, I've never had any problems with leftovers!  I'd bake 'em up and take them to work, and no one knew it wasn't real sugar until I mentioned that I used the Splenda.

Damn, now I really want some apple pie!  Linnea, here's a proposition for ya...I'll trade you a warm apple pie for a kitten of your choice!  Deal?
