In my experience it's been the opposite, not exclusively of course, but the nastiest women I know use canes. I was taught to cane by a man, but I don't know many men who own as many canes as I do.
MmmmMMMMm canes!
On the other hand almost everyone I know in the lifestyle flogs, and owns floggers, even if it's not the favorite activity.

My canes are my love. I have 30 of them and can wax very poetic over them, lol. They are my favorite thing to top with and my favorite thing to bottom too....I also top with knives a lot (which someone else said was more of a guy thing).

So I like sticks and sharp things, and I like to play with sharp sticks (skewers) too!
