Nj is actually quite lovely.  81% is farmland/forest/beach.
The worst place I ever lived was Long Island in the late 60's.

The crappiest place I've ever lived would be Rawlins, Wyoming.  As they say, I spent a year there one week.  My RV broke down there the Friday before the annual demolition derby - no mechanic in town would even look at it until the following Monday.  With the added time for ordered parts, there goes a week of vacation in beautiful downtown Rawlins.  If you're ever there I recommend a tour of the local prison.  It gives "scared straight" a whole new meaning.

For long term I'd say Pt. Jeff Long Island.  I think if you have the means it would be a really lovely place to live.  At the time I was on a tiny budget, and didn't feel the love.

Are there any liberals in Liberal, Kansas?  I'm guessing not.

The worst place I ever lived was Youngstown, Ohio.  Ugly, backward, racist, miserable.  The people all huddled in a group waiting for the steel mills to come back.

Despite being born in West Yorkshire my earliest days were spent brought up by my grandparents on the Drumchapel Estate in Glasgow and I was to spend my early teens in the notorious Manningham district of Bradford, living near Lumb Lane. I knew early on about shebeens, prostitutes, drugs, and both the stabbings and investigations which went on around a couple of the local pubs. I lived with my divorcing mother on the Sloan Square estate. I even remember the address, 55 Sloan Square East. Two squares of four concrete apartment blocks. Concrete within. It was the sort of place where a policeman had to stay in the panda car to prevent it getting stripped by local kids. However I have seen a police car with both policeman and wheels removed. My father, a racist and bigot, repeatedly claimed that I would end up 'a Paki', commenting on the predominant Pakistani population of Bradford, part of which was concentrated in Manningham. I lived in what at the time seemed to be a multi-racial ghetto surrounded by terraced back to back houses occupied predominantly by Pakistani families. By far Mohammed was the most popular name in my school. Perhaps this is why I have a positive attitude towards Pakistanis and Muslims, I got to know them, understasd them, they represented safety. The older men formed their own 'protection'. One was the owner of a textile shop in the White Abbey Road, one of a few who could freely walk the streets with a baseball bat. I heard he had a collection, just like Joe DiMaggio, but used them in quite a different manner to Clipper.

L.I. in the 60's was wonderful. Where there are now houses and malls then there were farms of all sorts, except admittedly wineries. Nothing like going out to the beach and stopping at farm stands on the way home. L.I. duckling, fresh fish, new potatoes, local strawberries.

Robert Moses built the L.I.E. and it all went downhill from there.

Corner or Hawthorn Ave and Osbourne Ave in Newark NJ. For anybody that means anything to this should give you a laugh: Now take a look at my pic. I have country bumpkin stamped on my forhead... got offered drugs daily 'cause why else would I be in a place like that? And my prick of an ex-husband wouldnt even come down to see me to the door. Thought I was stupid for being scared. Those gunshots were almost a whole block away, after all...

PS_ This is not a reflection on all Jersey! Once you are away from Elizabeth/Newark/Linden and such the rest is beautiful!

Actually..it wasn't all that bad from what I remember, but it was the worst out of the places I've lived.

i have been there passing thru...yea, i was not impressed.

probably the worst place i have lived was Modesto, Ca. smelled of cow shit and rotting fruit.
i was so happy to move to Humboldt county in wayyyyyyy northern, Ca. even if we couldn't find a place to live and camped out in a state park for over a month before renting a school bus.

corsetgirl -> RE: Where's the Crappiest Place Y/you've Ever Lived? (6/4/2008 8:35:27 PM)

I would have to say Cleveland, Ohio.  Then again, it was not the best of circumstances as I had to go to my then mother-in-law's funeral.  My father-in-law lived within the city and all I saw was dilapidated buildings and dirty streets!  That was 14 years ago but maybe things have changed since building the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame there.

bipolarber -> RE: Where's the Crappiest Place Y/you've Ever Lived? (6/4/2008 8:48:56 PM)

A really shitty apartment off of Colfax and 12th Street. Right across from the Gart Bros. Sport Palace. Absolute shithole, missing glass in the windows (which I had to repair and repaint in exchange for no deposit on the place.) Little to no heat in the winter, sweltering in the summer. Roaches. The occasional mouse. And my upstairs neighbor was a drug crazed 'Nam Vet who would go into screaming fits some nights.

I left in the middle of the night, a couple days after the cops found a street person knifed on my back steps. Despite breaking my lease, my landlady never bothered to try and track me down. I guess she understood why I decided to cut my losses.

Sometimes, $200 a month rent is no bargain. (in 1982)
