i'm not familiar with "dun", i know you're meaning to say "don't".  but is dun a text-speak word?

CalifChick -> RE: Annoying Acronyms (6/5/2008 7:47:22 PM)

Okay pink, choose to be insulted.

By the way, if you're going to use slashy speak, you could at the very least use it correctly.  It would be "those of U/us", not "T/those of U/us".

And "dun" does not mean "don't" or "doesn't", it means:

1.  Marked by drabness or dullness.
2.  To plague and pester, particularly in making a demand for payment.
3.  An urgent request, especially in regards to payment.

dun is a color.  kind of a sandy brownish / tan

wait..I'm gonna add more....

Here we go: 1.to make repeated and insistent demands upon, esp. for the payment of a debt. –noun 2.a person, esp. a creditor, who duns another. 3.a demand for payment, esp. a written one.
and I was wrong about the color:
1.dull, grayish brown. 2.dark; gloomy. –noun 3.a dun color. 4.a dun-colored horse with a black mane and tail. 5.mayfly. 6.Angling. dun fly.

BBWnNC72 -> RE: Annoying Acronyms (6/5/2008 7:49:00 PM)

i was a little confused by "dun" too.  It sounds to me like " i dun did the dishes ma" LOL
which would really mean " i did the dishes" not " i didn't do the dishes"

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: Annoying Acronyms (6/5/2008 7:51:51 PM)

I've found that things I enjoy reading, or gain the most from, are posts that have been written without a lot of things to distract from the point being made.  If I spend half my time translating the acronyms, text-speak and slashes - then I usually don't bother, and scroll down to a post that isn't so problematic.  It isn't that I have any personal distaste for the individual. I just opt not to struggle throught their posts. I'm sure that many here, feel the same. It isn't a personal slight against anyone - we just like what we like.

Now, when someone tosses out an acronym I don't know, I hardly consider myself left out.  I see it as a chance to open communication with that person, and ask them what it means. I've found that the simplest things can be a welcome mat at the door of communication, and sometimes the most amazing people are on the other side.

golly! (doing my best gomer pyle impression),  i "learnt" a new wrd t'day!

BBWnNC72 -> RE: Annoying Acronyms (6/5/2008 7:53:01 PM)

Function: noun
1 : a dun horse
2 : a variable color averaging a nearly neutral slightly brownish dark gray
3 : a subadult mayfly ; also : an artificial fly tied to imitate such an insect

i kind of like the third meaning, a subadult mayfly. Who knew.

GreedyTop -> RE: Annoying Acronyms (6/5/2008 7:53:23 PM)

As it happens, i like 'dun' for 'don't' and 'Yr' for 'Your'.

i also like my particular type of slashy speech....but thanks for the input.

Really; it's a message board; freedom of expresson is kinda the idea.

I'm with you on that, Asher--VERY annoying! A simple 'brb' will do--and if I don't know what something means, I have no problem asking!

No, actually, getting a message across is the idea of a message board.

Have to agree with Cali here.

When one's attempts to be "unique" result in messages that are difficult to decipher, the content is often negated by all the fluff, and the posts will simply be skipped by many members.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Annoying Acronyms (6/5/2008 9:31:29 PM)

Acronyms don't bother me and it saves typing....  unlike T/typing L/like T/this W/which is A/almost as A/annoying as Y/y/Your F/font C/color and SIZE.
