Reasonable P/pl can disagree.

Why does this concept elude so many P/pl posting on this thread?

Do you see any?  Or has reasonableness gone the way of common courtesy and taking responsibility for one's actions?

<fast reply>

Most acronyms, taken singly at least, don't bother me, and I'm oddly fond of imho.

Text that consisted largely of acronyms and "text speak" might cause me to roll my eyes. There were a few entries in the thread that I literally couldn't understand, which was a bit frustrating.

On message boards and in e-mail, I'm pretty scrupulous (to the extent my lousy typing permits) about using standard English. On my phone, where a single letter can take three strokes, I confess I often fall prey top the temptation to shorten things.

It always amuses me that people use IMHO when a capital M isn't very humble, I note you used a lowercase one though dc.

dcnovice -> RE: Annoying Acronyms (6/8/2008 1:37:42 PM)

Well, I think some folks cap it because acronyms are usually upper case, at least on this side of the pond. I've noticed that y'all sometimes treat acronyms as words: Aids (UK) vs. AIDS (US), for instance.

Raechard -> RE: Annoying Acronyms (6/8/2008 1:39:17 PM)

Some sticklers for tradition even use dots i.e. I.D.[8|]

dcnovice -> RE: Annoying Acronyms (6/8/2008 1:41:05 PM)

I'd use the periods for i.e. but not for ID.

At work, bizarrely, we use U.S. but UN.
