There were a few entries in the thread that I literally couldn't understand, which was a bit frustrating. On message boards and in e-mail, I'm pretty scrupulous (to the extent my lousy typing permits) about using standard English. On my phone, where a single letter can take three strokes, I confess I often fall prey top the temptation to shorten things.

It always amuses me that people use IMHO when a capital M isn't very humble, I note you used a lowercase one though dc.

Well, I think some folks cap it because acronyms are usually upper case, at least on this side of the pond. I've noticed that y'all sometimes treat acronyms as words: Aids (UK) vs. AIDS (US), for instance.

I'd use the periods for i.e. but not for ID. At work, bizarrely, we use U.S. but UN.
