Anti-discrimination laws do not turn race, gender or age into 'qualifications'.  They merely prohibit a bias against the protected class in hiring, promotion and other matters.
 
Maybe You've misssed this, but many companies have engaged in actions which cause workers to lose T/their pensions or health insurance, in part by the practice of not hiring or retaining P/pl who might someday actually use such benefits. 
 
It is illegal, it is wrong, and it is allowed to occur freely to feed the greed of CEO's -- usually white males.

Which is exactly what some people have against them. 

 
Affirmative action, like many things intended for one purpose, can be abused and misused to ill effect. 
 
AA, school bussing, et al. came about because some people needed a kick in the ass to start treating their fellow human beings better, and instead of whining about how sore their ass is, the apologists for discrimination should heed their own advice, and just 'get over it'.

MLK said he looked forward to a day when his children would be judged, not on their race, but on their character. Yet, when making a choice based on character you are likely to be called a racist. In a land where a black man of muslim decent is a contender to rule the free world and a black woman is the National Security Advisor, it appears that any significant racism only really remains in those who point the finger. If you think you are repressed, you will be. If you think you are free you will see the possibilites. So, its time for those pointing the finger to start teaching their children they have a future, not teach them that "the man is keeping them down". Teach them they can do whatever they dream, not that they will never amount to anything! I believe rhe ideaology of racism paralells the ideaology the muslim extremist use to recruit suicide bombers.

If you are my age or younger, you went to the same schools. You had the same teachers and more advantages, resources and preferential treatment. Blame your situation on me one too many times and you may see a self-fulfilling prophecy. Though you will deem me a racist, the truth will be your lack of character.

Quota systems are alive and well in the arena of higher education hiring.  I almost did not get a job because they were going for a candidate that would fill certain criteria.  My hiring had to be justified, it was an uncomfortable process, made even more so by the fact that I almost lost out on a job opportunity to someone who had less experience than me.  A/A EEO may have it's place, but it tends to create a quota system in hiring.

And are you saying that there wasn't one before AA? 

That everyone got hired strictly on merit and the reason there was such a disparity in race and gender in certain areas was due to the innate inferiority of women and minorities?

It was the first time in my experience that I was completely aware of what was going on.  And surprised that they would use quotas in the hiring of clerk/typists.

Then I'm not sure what your point is relevant to my saying that AA is not immune ( along with everything else on the planet) to being misused.

There was an unfair imbalance created by discrimination... if your tire were going flat would you just wait for it to self correct, or would you add more air?

The solution worked out was to add more minorities to restore some semblance of balance.  As the 2 USSC Bollinger rulings showed, it was an imperfect fix in one case, and a workable one in the other.
