The combined town hall meeting campaign seems to me to be a pretty cool idea. However I have no illussion that McCain wants it to frame the debates as a man with outstanding oratory skills vs. a man who is really strong thinking on his feet. Obama will have to decide if he can step up his thinking on his feet skills to counter McCain.
It's a nice move onMcCain's part because it gives him the look of being more a man of the people, and offering it up will make many folks think Obama is weak if he turns it down. It's a matter of McCain picking a battlefield where he thinks he has the best advantage.

Lets also remember that McCain has himself been the victim of some shady tactics in his past so it might be a bit cleaner than campaaigns in the recent past.

Organizations on both the left and right that are not controlled by the political campaigns (ie: Moveon.org). These organizations and special interest groups are not going to honor the wishes of the candidates to keep it a clean campaign. In 2004 it was "Swiftboat Veterans for Truth" that derailed John Kerry. That was a 527 and had no connection at all to the Republican party or GWB. 527s will again be a huge factor in this election because it is going to be a very close race.

Hi there cyberdude...I believe these groups have been controlled by their parties in the past but even if they were not all it would take is a candidate to disavow them.

I think McCain did that once already and I hope both continue to do so. Obama has been consistent in his speeches that he wants a clean about the issues campaign.

I believe they are both honorable men…even if I don’t agree with some of their political stances.

I don't doubt that McCain's town meeting proposal stemmed in part from his thinking that it would benefit him. To me, though, the more important question is whether it would benefit the electorate. That, I think, is the basis on which Obama should accept or decline the invitation.

It's worth noting, I think, that the town meetings need not necessarily exclude some formal debates and/or traditional one-candidate-one campaign rallies.

Since this thread has popped back up already, I'm going to take the opportunity for an above the belt shot...

Obama's offer for a televised Town Hall debate was to have it on the Fourth of July. So does this demonstrate how completely out of touch he is with working-class Americans, that he doesn't understand people go out to celebrate, OR, is it a craven political move to avoid having to think on his feet when people might actually be watching?
