Congratulations on raising such an outstanding young Man.  I'll be keeping all of you close in thought and prayer during this time.

I have no idea where to put this, but I feel I'm being randomly stupid... so here goes.

I knew he's going into the Marines. Hell, I signed the papers. But yesterday, when he came home and told me the actual date he's leaving for boot camp (October 6th), I broke down and started sobbing right in front of him. And I can't stop.

It was bad enough when he almost died from peritonitis in April, and then he graduated high school in May and now, he's just so damn excited about joining the Marines and eventually becoming an officer. I don't know where this kid came from! I worked for Witness for Peace in Central America in the 80's, for god's sake!

I know, I know, like I told the recruiter, I have to help him follow his dream for himself, not mine. But it's just so damn.... I don't know. And all my friends and family keep asking me these intrusive questions in 'concerned' tones about how do I feel about my son going into the military in these times. LIKE I DIDN'T REALISE WE ARE IN A STUPID WAR ! And like I need to air my most private fears for their enjoyment.

The stupid kid is a born leader. It's obvious in everything he does. It's even obvious to the Marines he has been working with. He is so goddamn happy. And I can't stop crying.

Sorry for the rant. Thank you for wasting your time reading this.
Of all the feelings and emotions you stirred up with this posting(my son is 19)not a one of them had to do with your wasting my time, rather i was reminded just how precious our time with our children is and how much harder it is to find that time once they sread their own wings.Along with other posters here I applaud the wonderful job it would seem you have done raising such a fine and proud young man.I join with those offering my prayers for his safety and  celebrate the pride in him you must feel...no i don't think you wasted anyone's time... au contraire dear Lady thank You for the Posting and thank Your son for his future service to his country...may he and all that serve be safe

You're not.  Your son is becoming a man....and stepping out into the dangerous world.  That's hard for any parent to contemplate.

Your son is choosing to be a Marine...which means he is choosing to put himself in harm's way.  That's scary for any parent to contemplate.

Your son is choosing a path that is challenging and ultimately rewarding...he is choosing to be a man above the rest.  That is wonderful for any parent to contemplate.

Your tears do your son justice.  They are what every son deserves when they set out into the world.  Tears, and a prayer that he will come safe home again.

This ex Marine adds his prayer to yours.

*Hug hug*

Don't stress too much, and start figuring out ingenious ways to smuggle him candy through the mail.

None needed.  The Marines will not mess with a recruit's mail.

Although I highly recommend cookies instead of candy--ships better, and a passing around of a cookie tin in the middle of boot camp does WONDERS for morale.

This I know!

Darling hejira,

blessings and peace to you... and  your child who is in fact a man.  Today was a lovely day and then my nephew called ... I leave next weekend he says... and we both know where he is going - for the fourth time.  and all i can say to him is be safe, be who you are and let your fear be a gift that leads you when appropriate and your caring lead you when that is appropriate and your strength when that is called or ... and mostly let your wisdom tell you which is which... and then he says, I know... and duck!  and we laugh and a little catch is felt tugging at my heart.  Is it something like that?  He has the wisdom you've given him... and may you have the ability to trust it... *hugs, sunshine

you have successfully raised a man to be proud of, and yet that success has you scared out of your wits for his future.  my mom gave me a wall hanging once that said "motherhood isn't for wimps!"  know that all of us will have you both in our thoughts and prayers.  parents have the toughest job in the world, raising our little ones and then letting them go out and face the world on their own.

           To all...
I want to take the opportunity to thank you all for sending well wishes and prayers to My little girl and her son. He's very excited about what's ahead of him. Although he's not actually My son, I do have a great relationship with him. (As I do with all 3 of hejira's children.) I'm very proud of the man he's becoming. Having said that...I'm going to brag about him a bit...(And her.)
He really is a fine young man. He is so clear and focused on what he wants to do in his life. It's awesome. He's mature, responsible, intelligent, a born leader. Yes, he can be, as My little girl lovingly puts it..."An arrogant a**hole," but hey, didn't we all know everything at age 17?
I'd also like to say that the credit for the man he's becoming goes to My little girl. Not to speak ill of the deceased, but she has done and is doing an amazing job raising her children without their father. All of the best qualities her children show are ones that they got from her.
He and I have had a few heart to heart talks on the subject of him enlisting. He has My respect. He has My thanks for choosing to serve our country. (As do all of you reading this who have served in the military.) I've told him this on more than one occasion. He shows respect to Me, not as a father figure, but as an adult, a friend, and the man in his mother's life. He really is a good kid. I want nothing but the best for him.
I will take care of My little girl as she deals with the reality of October 6th. She will always have My ears to listen to her, My shoulders to cry on, My arms to hold her, and My heart to keep her. But I want to thank you all for supporting her when she needs her friends. We're both grateful to all of you.

                                                                                                                    Michael.
