I remember that incident all too well....folks here were shocked, sickened, outraged that a man would be brutalized in such a fashion.  It was beyond barbaric.

While reading this thread my mind jumped to New York City that bastion of "liberal"thinking and my home town.Shortly after this horrific crime a parade was held in Far Rockaway a town in NY(at present i can not recall was this a 4th of July parade,no matter really)well some enlightened civil servants in a despicable display of the exercise of free speech decided a reenactment of this event was appropiate to the occasion.The uproar was immediate and voracious,the offending fireman lost thier jobs and than clothing themselves in the right to due process sued to get bak their jobs....My memory is fuzzy on the outcome of their lawsuit but I seem to believ the city's right to fire them was upheld under a morality clause in the contract they worked under...These fine examples of American mamhood had went whole hog with the "victim' in blackface and everything ...my hope for America is a future where not only don't these events take place but where apparently good people cease to see any humour at all attached to such acts....we have a looong way to go...

Level thanks for the link ,read the article and as someone who lived in Queens at the time let me assure you THEY were city employees fireman definately,though i'm not so sure about police officers being involved...if you ever lived in NY you would appreciate how hard it is to get Policeman and Fireman to cooperate on anything....even a despicable act like this "parody"...as an aside listening to a lawyer describe this has nothing more or less than an SNL skit is as good an explanation for the popularity of the legal profession has any other i have heard

Status: offline 		Obviously, I am assumed to be the ringleader of the offensive... However, I agree that what happened was horrific. However, it should serve as a warning to society as a whole. In another thread it was said that "the Ku Klux Klan is gone and they are impotent". This proves that they are not and that wishing something to go away doesnt make it happen. There are a great many places in the American South where you can still die for being the wrong color in the wrong town once the sun goes down. What happened in Jasper was horrific, but despite what certain articles or the wishful thinking of certain journalists would have you believe, nothing has changed.

For example, I would not DARE be a black man in Vidor, Texas once the sun goes down. As recently as last summer I was sitting in a BBQ resteraunt in Vidor, when two Texas DPS officers (the equivelant of a "State Trooper / Highway Patrolman") pulled in for lunch. The white officer was told "You can stay but yer monkeys gotta wait in the car". Both left, and to my amazement nobody was arrested. (Which in retrospect was probably wise because the town judge who would hear the case is probably the grand wizard and the black cop would have been in town after dark.)  Following president CLINTON (not Johnsons, Clintons) failed attempt to integrate Vidor the last black man out was dead 11 hours after he left town.  In Anuahuac Texas I have heard people refer to black children as "gator bait" during the alligator festival...  I have been pulled over by a Pasadena cop in the middle of the night to ask if I saw a "buck n word" running loose because apparently they were pursuing an african american male suspect who bailed out of a car following a chase. He shined his light in the back of my SUV to make sure I wasnt hiding the man, and then advised me to "Call 911 if you see any wild negros running or acting suspicious." (Gee thats right Im gonna call 911 - yes "Hi Id like to report seeing a black person?" Gimme a fucking break! I wouldnt be surprised if some people have their klan robes hanging next to their police uniform! )  In Spring / Conroe / The Woodlands a hispanic teenager was anally raped with a patio umbrella at a graduation party for asking out a white girl. Celtic may know better than me exactly where that was as I can never keep straight whats on the Northern side of the city, except for "Cut and Shoot" (real town name) which is another sunset town, but that anal rape with the umbrella incident happened like a year ago I think... Then over in Lousiana we had the noose incident, and the Jenna 6...  In response to the Jenna 6 incident nooses were also hung in Pearland Highschool in Pearland TX. I have sat in a Starbucks in my own town, with a date, as we overheard the HS kids at the next table having a conversation about "whats wrong with this country is all the (n word and S Word) .   

So about the most insensitive thing Im going to say is that what happened  to Mr Byrd was terrible. However, despite what many may hope or wish it hasnt gotten better and racism, even to that extreme, is alive and well in America today. Its nice that the Obama followers want us all to hold hands and sing Kumbayah and We Are The World but there are still many places in America where you can die for being the wrong color in the wrong place and the civil rights battle is far from over and as long as there are highschool kids anally raping their classmates with an umbrella, hanging nooses, and sitting in starbucks blaming the ills of the world on various racial slurs there is going to be a new generation of 20 - 30 something year olds ready to drag a man to death or to shoot one etc...  Ignoring it, and pretending that there is no Klan and there are only a handful of extremists out there is only lying to yourself. They are out there and there are more of them than the liberals could envision in their worst nightmare.

So Celticlord, what are you going to say about this? I thought your theory was that we are all colorblind here in America, racism is the exception, and only libbies run around crying racism? Better straighten out DA. By the way DA, I knew you wouldn't let me down on this one.

Admitting it happens and acknowledging things arent as rosy as people think does NOT mean I support it. It simply means that I refuse to lie and say the boogeyman isnt out there. He is.

According to Sons, Tuck and Turner dragged the victim outside, where he was burned with cigarettes, kicked in the head with steel-toed boots, cut with a knife and then stripped and sodomized with a pipe. After the attack, Tuck and Turner poured bleach on the victim.
Tuck, apparently, was a neo-Nazi. The authorities say he had swastika tattoos and a wallet with a swastika. Since the victim is Hispanic and racial epithets were shouted during the attack, prosecutor Mike Trent says the attack was motivated by racism.
The attack took place during the early morning on April 22.
After three months in the hospital, the victim is back at Klein Collins.
 
As an aside, I was confused on the chronology because apparently the victim killed himself last year so it came back into the news...

FYI - both Spring and Pearland are nice parts of Houston. The Bruce Springsteen song Galveston Bay is about when the Klan came in to drive the Vietnemeese Shrimpers out of Kemah / Seabrook Texas in the 1980's... 

They are out there, and there are more of them than you think. I have recieved several invitations to join the Klan, and the Knights of the White Kamelia (which is the same thing) and not from people you would expect. We are talking guys in my chamber of commerce, and professionals I do business with - not toofless rednecks...

I understand, christine. How can someone hate another person, that they don't even know, that much? The human race is fundamentally flawed, and that was a prime example of it.

I know. My point to celtic was his repetitive insistence on the other thread yesterday that racism in America was a rarity. You clarified that it is indeed the same and no matter what journalists want us to believe, it does not change. Just wanted to see if he would come down as hard on you as he did on me. You know, fair and balanced and all that stuff...    Your anecdote from below kills me.

I can state for fairly certain the judge is not Klan-friendly.

There are places where this is true.  There are a great many more places...an overwhelming number of more places, where this is not.  Any person who has travelled the length and breadth even of just Texas knows this to be true.  There is nothing more that needs to be said.

My statement was not theory, but a summation of observations--the benefit of having two eyes and an open mind.

As for straightening out DA....I am skilled and capable, that is true...but there are some things best left to the Almighty.

Status: offline 		Archer, I'd like to agree with you...but I look at the speed at which this country seems to have adopted the view that hatred of anything from the Levant is automatically acceptable.  I cringe when I hear casual references to "ragheads" and "camel jockeys, but I get scared when these comments are tolerated, or applauded.   We seem to love to find a new group to hate.

Aynne, no thank you. I politely decline the invitations, generally falsely citing imaginary security concerns that various background investigations I am subject to would endanger ther organization.  See, despite being a WASP, I am smart enough to not want to get on the wrong side of the Klan. I am not gonna join them, but I dont want to piss them off either...

Status: offline 		Well celticlord, my observations are vastly different. I am sure you would not presume that makes them incorrect? I mean it is rather hard to invalidate someone else's life experiences?   

I do agree with the assessment on straightening out DA tho.. The almighty better be alMIGHTY in that case!

For some, assessing the extent and sources of racism today is a mere intellectual exercise, a debate topic, or a partisan diversion.

For others, it is a survival skill.
