both Clint movies were beautiful visually and historically - and if he wanted to add Black actors to the films then he would have. i don't care that Clint didn't hire Black actors for them - it's HIS movies. Spike is free to make his own version depecting the same events with Black actors though i don't think it will do well in the box office or be as visually inspiring as Clint's.

I think Spike is trying to stir the embers of his 15 minutes on the coat tails of an icon.  By the same reasoning, shouldn't he have cast a few black actors to play some of the Italian neighborhood characters in Summer of Sam?

Not sure what Spike Lee hopes to accomplish.  Other than his usual self-promotional BS.

15 minutes?  Ummm "Do the Right Thing", "Jungle Fever", "Malcolm X" and many more really relevant social films, Oscar winner, activist, creative genius......we should all spend our 15 minutes so well with so much impact on society.

Spike is a good director, but, as a director, he's nowhere close to Clint's level of craftsmanship.  Clint's directorial debut, Play Misty For Me, remains a compelling film even after almost 40 years.  Clint excels at creating compelling yet flawed characters--the kind that make for interesting story telling (Josey Wales, Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Highway, William Munny, Jimmy Markum, Frank Dunn, Maggie Fitzgerald).

40 years from now, will the same be said of Spike Lee's films?  Doubtful.

So, yeah...Spike Lee should "shut his face".

I think Clint treated him with the respect he deserved.  Just like he would have treated any honky asshat with the same attitude.

Spike Lee retaliated:

quote:

First, Eastwood told Lee he should "shut his face" about the absence of African Americans in "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima." Then Lee fired back, "The man is not my father, and we're not on a plantation either.
"He's a great director" Lee admitted. "He makes his films, I make my films. The thing about it, though, I didn't personally attack him. And a comment like 'a guy like that should shut his face' -- Come on, Clint, come on! He sounds like an angry old man right there."

Uh Im sure this will be unpopular but it is true, The US Military desegregated under TRUMAN not Roosevelt. The reason for the abscense of the black charectors is because they werent there!!! There WERE no black men in those units. There have already been movies made about the Tuskegee Airmen and the Buffalo Soldiers and Carl Brashear and the Chicago 50 etc... Eastwood isnt being racist, he is being historically accurate. Except in the black units, which had white officers, the blacks were cooks and stewards and ammunition loaders at the time those movies were set.

Still the question remains. Can a white actor play the part of Othello? If the answer is 'yes', it follows that it would be a sign of positive evolution if actors were considered for their acting skills before their skin colour.

If one is going for a certain level of historic accuracy then no a white actor should not be cast as Othello. If however historric accuracy is not a primary purpose of the production then race should become a non issue. Clint has been known to be very interested in some level of historic accuracy. Because this film was specificly written to be an accurate dipiction, the race of the soldiers is a legitimate qualification.

There were approximately 700-900 black Marines on Iwo Jima.  Given the intensity of the battle, and the relative absence of a rear battle area (hard to have on a small piece of volcanic rock stuck in the middle of the Pacific Ocean), it would be facetious and intellectually dishonest to say that black Marines were not there and/or did not fight.  They were and they did--that much is historical record.

However, there were approximately 30,000 Marines total involved in the battle.  That, too, is historical record.  The men involved in the raising of the flag on Mt Suribachi were not black.  That is also historical record.

The absence of black actors and black characters from a film centered on that moment does not invalidate the role black Marines played in the actual battle.  The battle was larger than that photogenic flag-raising, and the heroism displayed throughout the battle was hardly limited to just those few men.  The flag was raised on 23 February 1945; 11 of the 14 Medals of Honor awarded during the battle were for actions occuring after that date.

Spike Lee claims to be a student of history.  He would do well to remember that history is larger than photographs, and that the telling of one chapter is just that....the telling of one chapter.

I like Spike's films .. well some of them.  Eastwood has been one of my  favorite actors since I was a kid.  Now, apart from sappy emotional movies about Iowa bridges, I find him to be one of my favorite directors.  Spike is known for trying to grab the limelight at times by stirring up this kind of nonsense.  I will have to agree with him on a few points this time.  Clint is old.  He was angry.  In that respect he sounded like an angry old man.  And he has every right to be.  STFU Spike and quit trying to pick a fight with an old man whose Hollywood legacy blows your out of the water.  You wanna challenge Clint, make more movies.

Make more movies, act in several award winning roles, and wait until you're Clint's age to expect to get the same kind of respect that he's Earned over his career....

I'm not a fan of Spike's movies - I simply haven't been impressed by any of them.  The fact that he tries to take potshots at someone who has about a million times more Experience than himself just makes me even less impressed.  The fact that he's a blatant attention whore on top of those two things... just puts him at the bottom of my list of people who's movies I'm willing to pay to go watch.

My first thought was "go Clint." My second was just echoing his own sentiment "shut the f- up "shelton." In most of lee's "joints" you can count the number of white folks on less than one hand.....from all his movies combined. (Well, ok, he used a few in 25th hour, but that's it.) Then he's got the gall to criticize a great director like Clint? To that I say "pushaw."

And do you notice in THIS conflict thus far, who threw down the race card first? All Clint said was to shut up and now "shelton" has to go to "we're not on a plantation."

Plantation or not, Clint could kick his ass and he needs to watch who he bad mouths. I would wager Clint just miiiiiiiight be a bit more connected in Hollywood than "shelton."
