Status: offline 		My brother, who is a year older than i, has a terrible habit of 'revising' his past when relating to his UM's.  We attended the same college in the early '70's, and i was there when he smoked dope; when he thought 'Stairway to Heaven' was the greatest song ever written; when he dabbled in Transendential Mediation, etc.
 
So c'mon, P/pl -- tell the truth.  IfY/you were of age in that era did Y/you:
 
smoke dope?
 
protest the War?
 
dodge the draft?
 
dress like a hippie?
 
hitchhike?
 
see 'Alice Cooper' in concert?
 
Let's have a little honesty from A/all Y/you 'revisionists' out there!

Lets see i forget most of it but i will try to answer your questions in the order You posed them...YES..no...no...YES....YES ...and no ,but in my defence as far as the war stuff I was 13 when it ended(for us) and Alice Cooper nah I was to busy seeing Led Zeppelin ...let me add this when talking to my own son about pot I have allways kept the conversation restricted to my hope that he wait to reach maturity before he does any experimenting that might preclude his reaching maturity.This way i maintain some sort of credibility and still (I hope)keep him heading in the right direction

Status: offline 		Um, look at my profile pics. That long-haired pic was 72 or so. Yep, protested and got gassed. Draft number was 8. Didn't see Alice Cooper. Hitched over 10,000 miles.

I have so many stories, stories you wouldn't believe.

I once had my own little LSD cult. I've always had a certain "charisma", so to speak. Had a little "poly" family when I was 19. Did the bathhouse scene in my mid-20s. Took the 30s off to build up capital so I could fuck off the rest of my life. So far I'm on track. No money, but I don't have to work.

Lots of stories.

Status: offline 		i smoked dope -- though i didn't get much from it -- and i (think) i've been honest with my UM about it.  i still believe firmly that marijuana should be legal, and she knows this as well.
 
However, before she left for college, i had a talk with her about the changes in drug laws, such as mandatory minimum sentences.  i tried to convey to her that the risks now far outweigh the fun, and she should beware of illegal drugs.
 
Maybe s'thing i said sunk in. i know she's dropped friends before because they used drugs around her.

I too think I have been pretty sucessfull with my son,he is a junior at NYU and even given my obvious bias I think he would measure up to anyone's standard of a fine young man ...But given my history I was as i said very careful not to demonize pot at the risk of losing all my credibility with him.Once I lose my cred how do I talk to him about anything

My first arena concert... the Chambers Brothers had a current hit with 'Time', Alice was the headliner.  The other opening act had just been signed to  the tour that morning and were playing their first gig ever outside of New York...their name was (as the front man said it)  'Blue Erster Cult...'

Protest the war...I do that now
Dodge the draft...nope don't want to be a wanted person.  I've been in the military
Dress like a hippie...I didn't then...I wouldn't now

Status: offline 		Just out of the corps and back from a tour in Vietnam back then… I missed the beginning of the hippie movement and was a target for their protests. Loved the music, free love, and pot…but I kicked more than a few hippie butts… also got mine kicked a few times…lol… I wasn’t as tough as I thought…but it was great fun.

I tried it a couple of times but it put me to sleep.
The crowd I hung out with were not "peace and love" hippies we were working class, hard drinking "hippies" who never shied away from a fight.
We were, "from the part of Cambridge where they don't go to Harvard."
Protest the war? Not really, we just went to Harvard sq and the Boston common where they held those protests to pick up and fuck college chicks from New York who went to school in Boston and to get into fights with the Cambridge and Boston cops.
"Put that beer bottle down!" "Fuck You, Pig!" "Do something about it!"
A lot of our brothers were in Vietnam and many of us would follow.
Dodge the draft? Ah,...nope.
Dress like a hippie? Yup, College chicks again!
Hitchhiked? Of course! Everyone hitchhiked in the late 60's.
See Alice Cooper? Never heard of her.
We went to see Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Stones, Led Zeppilin etc.
And a lot of those college chicks came from a place called "Scarsdale" N.Y. for some reason.
And a lot of them were Jewish and they were fucking wild!
They'd do anything!
P.S. and they *loved* us Irish and Italian working class guys!

But, they'd already had the "Draft Lottery" and people with my birth date got a very high number and wouldn't have had to go but I did anyway.
I think it was "Sept 14th" that was the # 1 pick for the draft in that lottery.
So if that was your birthday you were fucked!

Popeye, i want to say a belated thank You for serving in the military during Vietnam. 
 
We had a whole bunch of 'vets start college with us about my sophmore year.  i was 'engaged' to one of them.  It was sad to watch them segregate themselves and hang out just with each other. It was obvious they were having serious adjustment problems, and there was nothing any of us -- who had not served -- could do to help.
 
They had a big rugby thing -- spent a lot of  time reserving fields and playing the game.  That is some serious aggression.  After one game, my 'fiance' had a piece of his ear missing from where it had been bitten off.  Didn't faze him in the least.
 
i remember the night of the lottery.  (Was there more than one?  i was in college when it happened.)
 
About 30 of us sat around holding lists of birthdays.  My brother ended up ith a fairly high number, and i thanked Gawd.  
 
This happened at the height of the Women's Movement (for me).  i remember thinking all the 'equality' we'd been bitching about was bullsh*t, as none of the girls were going to be drafted. 
 
It was a lovely time in my life for the most part, but there were some sad parts.

The first draft lottery was held December 1969, for all men born between 1944 and 1950.

It was folllowed by one in mid 1970 for men born in 1950, 1971 for men born in 1952, and 1972 for men born in 1953.

IIRC, no one from the last lottery was actually called up.

Status: offline 		It's not a terrible habit of revising his past, it's a case of doing what is right for his ums. He certainly shouldn't be saying "look at me, I spent my college years in a dope haze and I turned out all right".

He should be stressing the down sides and not the up.

I had this discussion with my son this past week. I didn't talk about getting stoned and having great stranger sex without protection because that isn't being a good role model. The incidents I chose to mention were the ones that had bad consequences; about feeling so paranoid doing pot that I ran out of the friend's room without warning and when I finally got back to my apartment, I locked myself in my room and hugged my teddy bear all night afraid to go to sleep. About breaking up with a guy primarily because of his heavy drug usage. And about addiction in the family and why he has to be extra careful about using substances to deal with issues.

Because I chose to talk to him in this manner, he felt safe enough to tell me he has started using in order to get out some feelings, we agreed that this is not the best way of dealing with the issues, and he has agreed to see the therapist on Monday.
