Bacteria are part of the food chain, and we wouldn't be able to survive without them. Salmonella is a particular strain of bacteria that can make people sick. We do a pretty good job with modern science in preventing food bourne illness, but it does happen sometimes. It's nothing new, and it's not a reason for panic. Here's some info on salmonella from the USDA: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/fact_sheets/salmonella_questions_&_answers/index.asp#5
