"America's Medicated Army"

By Mark Thompson

"Data contained in the Army's fifth Mental Health Advisory Team report indicate that, according to an anonymous survey of U.S. troops taken last fall, about 12% of combat troops in Iraq and 17% of those in Afghanistan are taking prescription antidepressants or sleeping pills to help them cope. Escalating violence in Afghanistan and the more isolated mission have driven troops to rely more on medication there than in Iraq, military officials say. "

i sincerely hope that our troops are receiving adequate medical care, and that qualified medical personnel are prescribing these drugs.  As a class of Rx drugs, they all carry risks of adverse reactions and serious side efects, and should not be handed out like m & m's.

If it eases a solider's angst in combat, i'm all for it.

I'm in Iraq right now, so I can give a little bit of insight. First, define adequate. Some places are better than others, just like at a civilian hospital or doctor's office. Yes, all meds are prescribed by a doctor. They get prescribed by the doc, to an individual, as needed. Most need the meds, but as in the states, a few slide thru the system and get them, when they don't really need them. They do help those who need it, but sometimes it's the UNITS that don't help at all. Commands don't always believe in PSDT, or in helping soldiers cope with thier problems, espically psychological problems. And it's not any better once the units redeploy back to the states.

YES THANK YOU... I am finishing my 2nd tour in iraq. The unites and Commanders dont always believe your PTSD, the think you malingering most of the time. Alot of the doctors i have gone too in the military dont believe you when you tell them what is wrong. They think your exagerating to get meds for recreation or just to get out of work.

Oh and to all that dont think taking another human life will change you. Try taking a few of them, after awhile its can become easier to do, you grow just alittle bit colder. And for the nightmares, look to you left and look to your right. now imaging them dead right now next to you... I personally dont have nightmares anymore, but being able to sleep is still a problem.
