Status: offline 		If Y/you ever been to 'myspace' or s'thing similar, Y/you've seen those 'banner ads' running across the top of Y/your screen for all sorts of stuff. Most of the time i just ignore them; they're no biggie.
 
i subsribed to a cute video clip site called 'Happy Slip Productions'. They'd send me an email from time to time when a new clip was available.  The actors in the clips were a 'family' of Filipinos, and many of ther skits were about the hilarious problems the kid had communicating with the parents. 
 
Just fun 'net fluff.
 
Well, i recently got an email from them telling me they were shutting down their site and i should contact them at an email addy for future information about a new web addy once they had one. 
 
The reason was, Google had accepted an ad for 'Filipino Women -- Hot, Hot, Hot' as a banner for their site.  They sent me the ad in html, and i had to agree, it was demeaning to Filipino women.
 
i did a little poking around, trying to find any guidelines for buying ad space on Google, or maybe a contact for Google public relations, but no joy.
 
i remember when magazines caved to public pressure and stopped accepting ads from tobacco companies.  Network television has long been restricted as to what ads it can broadcast. 
 
Why would a company like Google accept racist ads?  Is it just greed?

P.P.S.  This Op is not intended to solicit posts on racism in general in America.

google does have a good rep for staying on top of the serious PC issues though

ETA typing in filipino only got me ads for food, typing in "filipino women" got me dating site ads in the ad space... nothing that looked racist to my eyes

Status: offline 		The only way i am aware of that i could show You the ad would be to copy/paste the image into my post.  This is not permitted here on the boards.
 
If You have any suggestions, i'm happy to try s'thing i haven't thought of yet.
 
i'm not a IT type, so i don't know whether a Google search would pull up any banner ads.  Seems unlikely.

Status: offline 		Google is a publically traded company and it owes its responsibility to its stockholders, not to the preservation of the dignity of Fillipina womanhood. If a company is willing to buy ad banners promoting their fillipina porn site or mail order bride business etc - then thats revenue on Googles balance sheet and it is their duty to take that money. Google isnt a public service, it is a business.

What's weird is that this is your garden variety "mail order bride" website.  You can find these (Filipino, Thai, Mexican, Russian) all over the net.  It's not something unique to Google.

Status: offline 		The funny thing about Google advertising is they will advertise Boy Racer type cars on a site dedicated to road safety campaigning because they are only looking for word connections such as with their search. This clumsy reliance on computers has caused great emotional distress to people in the past.

Oh well fuckered they be, no one can have an impact on the big corporations.

i agree DomAviator. 
 
How do You explain the decisions of some companies in the magazine business to decline ad revenues from tobacco or distilled spirits manufacturers?

Status: offline 		they're hoping to increase revenue based on their target audience through using ads that don't contain these products.
that would be one completely viable explanation considering if their target audience involves mothers, cigarette and alcohol ads may discourage readers from buying the magazine so it's not lying out in front of their children.

    Okay...i appreciate that P/pl want to view the ad referenced in the Op.  i have reviewed the TOS and Administrtive Guidelines, and it seems you are correct blushes.  i can post a link.
     
    Note: i'm not very familiar with photobucket, so my efforts to enlarge the image so that the banner ad may be seen may or may not have worked.  i tried my best.

    My sons' say they are in favor of the world being a 'Marketocracy', instead of, say, a democracy or oligarchy.
    As I tell them all the time when we have simular conversations - this is exactly why i have such a responsibility to vote with my dollar. If i find something a company does, it's advertising, or the advertising it accepts, offensive enough, then i quit giving them my money. If enough people agree with me, then the 'bottom line' for stock holders is adversely effected by the decission i found offensive, and the company thinks twice before doing it again.
    The companies only responsibility is to its stockholders, therefore, its only responsibility is to talk me into giving them my money. It does not, however, follow, that i have a responsibility to give them my money. They must earn that, and somehow manage not to lose the privilage of my money, and if they offend me, then they will lose it. That is the way the whole 'only responsibility is to the stock holders' thing works - that is the system of checks and balances in play.
    That said, why would 'hot Filipino women' be any more offensive than any other porn? Because they are saying that some men find women sexy because they are of a certain race? well, that happens to be true. Are you saying that Filipinos are an at risk population - less able to protect themselves from certain types of influence from these advertisements or companies?

    Status: offline     		Pink, Sugar, that is not even saying that it is about porn. It is saying that some people might want to date a Filipino. How is this more racist than the dating sites that cater to Jews? Christians? Blacks? BBW? STD Positive people? BDSMers? I am not sure I undersand?
    There are sites that counter to interracial relationships - relationships with age differences - relationships with Rich men and the women that want to be spoiled by one - Bald men and the women that want to oil their head for them - i mean, i am just not getting the esp racist nature of that site?

    Status: offline     		The banner shown is part of the Cupid network. They offer services to everyone, and have various sites catering to various groups. The site in question is: http://www.filipinaheart.com/ . It is a legitimate dating site, and is not racist or advertising any sort of prostitution. Perhaps you should have just tried clicking on the banner, or directing your browser to the address listed on the banner. Just as Collarme.com is a site for those looking for alternative dating, the site in question is a site for international dating. We all have our preferences, and should not be judged for them.
