My first outing into the leather D/s scene was a semi private/public party given by a local Domina in Toronto. It was 1986 and the community was small and still very underground. I had found out about it through the folks at Northbound Leather which, at the time, was a small hole in the wall in a back alley. The only place in town that made and sold fetish/bdsm related clothing, accessories and literature. I bought a pair of leather pants and a wrist cuff and went off into the night alone.
I was so nervous when I arrived that I paced up and down the street in front of the building for a good half hour before getting the courage to go in. Now that I think about it that was very indiscrete of me. The hostess was very nice but quickly left me on my own to mingle about. The space was really cool it was an old industrial warehouse space, not big but open and high. I wandered about the small groupings of strange faces. It was intimidating and I did not know how to approach these very leathery, dark and dangerously beautiful people. Being quite shy at the time, which came off as being aloof and arrogant, so I wouldn't approach people and others would not approach me. So I just hung about silently watching and listening. It was my comfort zone and that night I embraced it. It did not feel very welcoming maybe because I felt out of place, a poser in a world that I had only imagined and read about.
In spite of my neurosis I had a memorable time as it was there that I witnessed my first flogging, saw subs in collars and on leashes, sitting a their Dom/mes feet. Now that I look back it was actually a very ordinary play party but at the time I was awed by the spectacle before me. Some time during the evening a very sweet woman chatted with me. She turned out to be a wonderful Domme who over the next few years taught me about power exchange and D/s. She helped me understand my urges and desires and inspired me to embrace my journey into the dark side of my sexuality. It gave me the courage to go to the New York alone a few years later to get my nipples pierced and ringed at Angel Stern's Dungeon and check out New York's S/m club scene, which is a post in itself.
Since then I have owned a fetish club and have performed and played in many others.
