The ones that get to me are the super-short ones... they don't want to go into all the potential side-effects, so they just say "Ask your doctor about blahblah" without even giving a hint as to what the medication is supposed to help with. i just know that somewhere out there, a doctor is trying not to laugh because an older woman just asked him if she should be taking prostate medication.

Frankly, i think the pharma industry needs a lot less regulation. The hoops i have to jump through to get one of my medications are just ridiculous. And don't even get me started on the whole pharmacist thing...

I disagree. I heard about Lyrica via television advertising and it has made an enormous difference in my life.
Now the tone of most pharma ads bugs me, but I am glad the information is readily available to people.

I believe it's up to the doctor to inform the patient of the medication available to her or him. I see why you like being informed about new drug development, but there are many other ways to communicate a news than via television advertising. I know how big pharma works. They send hords of pretty sales reps to doctor's offices, flogging free lunches and 'consultancy fees' to 'communicate' with other medical professionals at 'conferences'... the advertising is just the top of the iceberg. Beneath it lays a pragmatic, sharkish business philosophy that simply plays with people's health for large profits.

It's about selling a product, not curing a disease. Television advertising is pernicious at the best of times, but to me drugs commercials are particularly terrifying...

People who need medicines can't get them and yet they dope children with amphetamines because of 'ADD' (overall, a 'condition' mostly created by big pharma to flog its products): it's a sorry, sad state of affairs, in my opinion.

What do I think? I think you need to research things a tad more before you post them. Pharmaceutical advertisements are not new. They lead back to the days of travelling salesmen who touted Dr Fickles Majik Elixer To Stimulate Men long before Viagra.

The Op is about TV advertising, magazine ads, etc, known as 'Direct to Public'. That's why i included a sentence encouraging P/pl to read the whole article i linked.

The Op is not so broad as to discuss the patent medicine industry and the history of the FDA.

(i'm deliberately not rising to the bait in yr post, camille. But i gotta say; if you dun like my Ops, why bother reading them or posting on the threads?)
