I am in the process of telling all my friends and family, neighbors, and anyone
that will listen, that everyone needs to start stocking up on food {especially canned
foods, and canned perishables with a long canned shelf life} ASAP, through-out the summer.

I plan to buy my favorite and not so favorite canned foods {especially corn}.

If we think the gas prices and food prices are bad now, wait until you see what
the prices of many foods {especially corn, soybeans, etc.} are going to be
in about 6 months.

Commodity Prices Show No Letup - NYTimes.com

I have updated my favorite 70's slogan.....gas, grass, ass or corn! No one rides free!

Has anyone else started to stockpile food recently?

If you think prices are high now, imagine them doubled within 3 months.
I would catch items on sale, and stock up as much as I can, if I were you.
I plan on buying as much canned corn as I can.
If corn doubles and triples, I will give cans out as Christmas gifts.

Havent stocked up on canned goods as of yet.. am planning too though..just in case.

But yeah.. i planted a garden this year.. luckily this is around my 4th or 5th year planting a garden.. started when i didnt ever have the worry that i'd need to save the veggies i grew. so.. i think of those past years..mostly..as learning experience.. and now know what works and what doesnt. This year has a few new things i'd never tried before. along with mixing in horse manure (which id never done before) and can see a world of difference already. Plus i expanded the size and got two more rows compared to previous years.

will also be trying various methods to save what can be saved.. nothing i can do with the lettuce..nor cucumbers.. ect..other then to consume them as they rippen, but everything else will either be frozen, or canned.Which is something i will be learning all new this year..never canned before.

Good for you suhlut!  You sound very self-sufficient which I believe many more will become
in the future.
My step-mother has a very large garden, and it seems to last her through the winter also.
I always wondered what happens to countries, that are not capable of growing enough food to sustain itself, the end result is not pretty.

califlower, green beans, summer squash, stuff like that make awesome pickles. there's always pickles for cucumbers. salsa is good with all sorts of stuff in there...canning's not hard it's just time consuming. my father used to do it all the time. the joke is that at this point we could survive anything other than a nuclear blast and even that's debateable. my mom says that she's married to grizzly adams.

the thing that gets me about the food price thing is that NBC ran this piece about food prices getting so high. they kept showing the people they had interviewed checkign out at the grocery store. the stuff they were buying was mostly luxury stuff. i'm sorry but if you're concerned about your grocery bill $10 beer and $5-$6 meat marinade is not the way to go.

If you like fresh corn...buy it from a stand. Cut all the corn from the cob and put it in a ziplock bag. Stick it in the freezer and you can have fresh corn year round. Just put some in a bowl in the microwave and it tastes great.

also.... hunting is a possibility.. where i live.. not to crazy about the taste of deer meat, so i've always forbidden my husband  from hunting..no reason to kill something i wasnt going to be willing to cook or eat, but. i spose i could learn to live with it.

One of my new trials this year in my garden is corn. what isnt eaten after its picked, i will be canning.. plus i'd bought more seed packs of corn then i had room for in my garden this year and will hope they will last till next year.

I doubt what i planted will be "enough" to last very long..even after canning, so.. will also be buying corn in cans to store. They sure are cute lil plant babies right now though.. already their lil leaves are bending..and i cant wait to see my lil baby corns agrowing.

You will be enjoying your frozen corn even more this winter
suhlut, when the rest of us are paying through the nose to get it.

There's a reason that 90% of  my groceries are purchased through a coop of strictly local/instate growers.  My grocery bill hasn't been going up, and my suppliers aren't facing shortages due to poor harvests/floods.

Have I started doing a bit of stocking up?  Yep - but no more than I normally do when I've got extra money to put in the grocery budget, or when there's fresh stuff in season to be frozen for later use.  There's a reason I do the other 10% of my shopping at Sam's Wholesale once every other month.  (Ok, so it may be a couple of times a month for the next 2 or 3 - but still.... )

yeah georgiapeach, what with where i live in this part on NY, i too have also been thinking about seeing if theres a way of buying right here local from farmers, dairy is huge here, as is apples and grapes.. along with the usual garden fresh produce..so seems there must be something available.. but only thing i've found so far, is a farm that has a sign that they sell fresh eggs.

i'm originally from the utica/cooperstown/oneonta area (but am not there anymore) and i know that a lot of our stands and farms folded except for corn. that may change this season but that'll remain to be seen. people just weren't buying from them and the weather hasn't been good enough to get decent crops.

Living in a very small apt. with no place to grow anything... can't afford food prices already... I am very concerned.  I am trying to figure out how to grow something in the apt with hydropnics or something.  I am watching this closely and trying to figure something out.  I know it won't be much, but it will add to what I can manage.  I want to learn what I can do for the biggest bang of vitamines, protein, etc.

Ever thought about asking the owner of the building, if you could have permission to use the roof?.. if its flat i mean, lots of garden stuff can be container grown up there as long as you water plenty.

~edited to add... that i once saw an infomercial, for this bowl shaped thing that had a special light attached to it, that used hydophonics i think.. perhaps a search online for one?.. it seemed to grow things like tomatoes squashes ect..easily.without taking up too much counter space...perhaps try a search online?

If the roof isn't available window boxes can provide some tomatoes, peppers and various herbs. If it's strictly you you might even get by with some leaf lettuce, it grows pretty well in a box.

You might also look around for a community garden. Its likely too late for this year but you'd be prepared for next year.

BTW to everyone talking about outting veggies up, if your garden isn't producing enough day to day to make canning individual veggies worth the effort you can easily enough freeze some till there is enough or make vegatable soup and can that.

Table cucumbers don't make great pickles but they can be pickled. Remember though that basic pickling does not preserve the pickles. You still have to can the pickles.

I am doing an online search and finding a lot of information on hydrophonics.
I actually would PREFER to grow my vegetables indoors, so I don't have to
have Popeye sit outside and guard my vegetables at night.

My indoor vegetables will become my babies, Lockit?  I will keep you posted.

An indoor vegetable garden would be right up my ally, I am thinking you could
take them outside for a few hours daily to soak up some sun?

Ken, thanks for letting me know that ya can freeze before canning!

aside from that, while i do LIKE pickles, i dont love them nearly enough to wanna try pickling on my own... an older sister did pickles one year, and she threw away the first batch, certain that theyd rotted somehow, till she later learned they were SPOSED to stink..and mmmm they sure tasted great, but again..not worth the time needed for me..so.. i will just eat my cucumbers and give away what i cant eat.
