I do not mean this in any disrespect, but in the year or so that I have been on this website, trolling, shadowing, and using the chatrooms(atleast until the anti-virus software on my new computer put an end to my ability to load the java applet) I have noticed many people have the title of Master or Dom in their nicks.  Many times it suits, sometimes it does not.

For those who bear it in their online monickers,  at what point did you feel you had enough experience, or what deciding factor, made you think you were ready to wear the title 'on your sleeve', so to speak?

Again, this is not meant as a disrespectful post or condemnation, it is an inquiry because I am of a curious nature, especially when it comes to social interactions and traditions.

Dark

often times it is just a makeup to lend credence to their image / has little to do with experience.

Well you know my personal thoughts Dark, in my opinion they are over compensating.

I have seen cases that I would personality interpret as that, CelticPrince, but since I personally know very few people from here, and none of them fall into that category, I presume nothing about anybody, until they act in a manner that lends definition to their character.

And that's interesting, CruelDesires, I went for the exact same one, but had to settle for what I have.

I think it is a good question. The counter or opposite question is how much experience does a sub need before putting sub in the name? The answer I think is none.  The same holds true for Dominants I would think. You really do not need experience, you are expressing who you are or want to be.

Sometimes it can sound pretentious, there is no doubt about that but often times thats a mere perception OR the person behind the name could be the kind of person to make a simple "Joe" or "Bob" sound pretentious.

Folks should just express it however it feels right for them.

I've not really given much thought to whole Master Dom Lord thing. I really don't know why people tend to get so worked up over it. Some days I think bdsm is just one big pissing contest.

I'm not a 'Master', and would never call Myself a 'Master' until My submissive chooses to address Me thus.  (I certainly don't feel that I've 'mastered' nearly enough of the lifestyle--knowledge and/or skills--at this point, to deserve to be called 'Master'.

IMO, 'Master' is a title that should be conferred by One's submissives/slaves-- and/or O/others in One's community--when T/they feel that One has 'Mastered' a variety of lifestyle 'skills', 'techniques', 'experienced', and/or 'knowledge'...

I'm a Dom, though, because I am Dominant, and I remain a Dominant, whether I am a good One or not...

I would call it self declared. There is no licensing requirement (that I know of). Some of us try to live up to it, some certainly don't. Hopefully the agency that accredits subs and slaves will get around to starting a dominance department. Oh wait, they self declare as well. I get the feeling that some subs are just as full of it as some Dom/Dommes are.

Calling yourself by a title is just a conceit.

Dom, slave, cheeseburger. Whatever.

Unfortunately Master Fire Maam ruins the scene on this one- she totally has earned it and shows in every fiber of her being IMO.

But generally, it's just wankers sounding dorky or who wanted a specifi "scene name" and latched onto an honorific.

I'm right there with you Logan.  Does a man need to have had sex with another man to consider himself gay, or is it enough that he fantasizes about men and isn't interested in women?  It's a designation, not a rank.  It expresses who you are and who you want to be, not how much experience you have, or how good you are at fulfilling your role.

However, I will day that a good portion of the people that put it in their screen name are simply keeping their ego satiated.

And who's to say that in their "the wankers" minds that they do not deserve those titles? Granted,,they might not live up to the expectations of quite a few lifestylers who frequently post here on the forums... but maybe in their own worlds they do .  And  guess what? They might even find someone on the other side that agrees with them.

Thats up there with why do certain people feel it necessary to announce their gender or their race in their monikers. They want attention from people seeking a certain thing, and thats the first impression they want to make. No one declared me a vampire, but it is in my name. No one has to tell someone who calls themselves slave, sub or switch in their name what they were. Its just a quick shorthand name to know someone's place.
I think sometimes some people think entirely too much about screennames. A friend of mine was named Demonesque132 a long while ago. She was constantly asked what the significance of the 132 was... and her stock answer was that the other 131 Demonesques beat her to the name, and she thought she was original.

Good point, CD. When someone takes issue with another's inclusion of Master or Dom or the like in their screen name I often wonder "Where are your credentials that you give you the right to complain?"

I agree, the exception that prooves the rule in that she totally stands out from all the others.

To the Op sometimes its pretentious and I have actually chosen to not speak to people due to their screen name as I think it has told me a lot about their character. I guess that as a few people has said it is true who are we to judge whats a master and what isnt, but I used to know a fair few with silly names Master Dom Sir was one, and to me it just makes you kinda roll your eyes. I do think that Master is a personal term used within a couple but each to their own. As LA said there are exceptions to every rule.

Dark,
I hope you don't mind but I want to put a spin on your question. If someone has Master/Sir/Dom in their nick do you adress them as such?

Blessed be,
Nika

The council of Majestic Twelve declared me , and gave me this title. They are a very secret organization ruling the world and by the authority you receive from them you have a saying on world events like wars, disasters and so on...

Of course you deserve a not so sarcastic answer.. Please go check the word "Master" in the dictionary. I found 35 different entries but I will paste only 6 of them here for you. If any one of them applies to you, dont hesitate to use the word.

1. a person with the ability or power to use, control, or dispose of something: a master of six languages; to be master of one's fate.
2. an owner of a slave, animal, etc.
3. an employer of workers or servants.
4. the male head of a household.
5. a person eminently skilled in something, as an occupation, art, or science: the great masters of the Impressionist period.
6. a person whose teachings others accept or follow: a Zen master.

I pretty much agree with Floggings4You.  I'll comment that I knew a man who had over twenty years experience with topping, especially bondage, had won bondage competitions, and along with his slave gave me training in flogging.  THAT'S a Master IMO - experienced, willing to share/train, and recognized by peers.

The term "Mistress" is even worse defined than "Master"/
