Status: offline 		Hello all.  Now I'm here asking for experiences with a medical procedure.  Anyone have lithotripsy?  I have a kidney stone.  I apparently have an effing big stone (as evidenced by every doc (6 so far) and every tech (about the same) who sees the CT or the x-ray saying "WOW, that's the biggest stone I've ever seen..." or some such comforting words.   Now they tell me they want to blast it out with sound waves (I'm voting for Alice Cooper, but...I think I don't get a choice on the media).  Anyone had this done?  I know all the medicine, I want to hear from real life folks who had their stones fractured.

Thanks.   And yes, it hurts more than about anything I've ever had.  And yes, vicodin IS your friend.

Status: offline 		My ex had this done and he didn't have any problems whatsoever. Just be sure to continue to drink water like they tell you to after its over to make sure everything gets washed out. You should feel great relief after its over with.

Status: offline 		My brother had this done recently.  He was home that night and back at work 2 or 3 days later.  They actually didn't finish the job on him the first time (a couple of years ago) they did it so he had it twice.  Both times, though, he said there was nothing to it.  Just tell them to make sure they get them all.  And listen to the dietary changes they recommend.  Some foods do increase the risk of those little monsters forming.
I have heard that passing one is the closest a man can come to giving birth so I highly recommend the sound wave thingy.

Status: offline 		my brother in law had this done awhile ago. He did have difficulity passing some of the pieces of the shattered stone but the only other option he had was surgery...


Good luck to you...i know it is so painful..

Status: offline 		Thanks, all.  This is the type of info I was looking for.  I am having it done...the alternative is surgery through the side to the kidney, and even with laproscopy, it isnt' something I'm looking forward to.

Status: offline 		Good luck, E. I hope your new diet allows for an occasional Italian beef sammie.Btw, lemme know if ya wanna get rid of leftover Vicodin. That shit can be habit forming, yanno and I wouldn't want to see you get hooked. Just watching out for ya, good buddy.

Status: offline 		Having witnessed two friends of mine dealing with this, I'd definitely recommend the procedure.  One friend I drove to the hospital when he couldn't stand anymore.  He passed the stone in the ER, and the scream that came from that treatment room cleared out the waiting room!  Okay, maybe not the waiting room, but there were some seriously frightened folks out there!   When he came out, he was as white as sheet and not feeling too well.....when he later got married, he had a total appreciation for the pain his wife had when she delivered the first kid.  He even said he could feel his stone passing all over again!  The other one had to have surgery to get them because they were too big to pass and caused blockage.  This was about 25 years ago, long before they had all the neat procedures now.  Of course, it didn't help that it was an Army hospital overseas.  *shudder!*

Status: offline 		Well I had the procedure this morning.   Basically I'm doing well.  Two things: 

1.  No one told me about the spinal.  Now, once its IN, a spinal block is peachy keen (if you don't mind that odd feeling of being dead below the nipple line).  BUT when the anesthesiologist isn't really good at it *shudder*   Thank GOD she had back up.

2.  No one mentioned the blindingly painful post-procedure urination.   Makes me long for a permanent #1, above.   But, in the words of the urologist "this too, shall pass".

Vicodin IS your friend.

I've had the procedure twice and once it hurt urinating afterwards and once it didn't. Based on having passed stones before I'm guessing that if the stone isn't broken up small enough you get that delightful feeling after the ultrasound.

Did you know that hydrocodone (Vicodin) is metabolised to dilaudid in vivo? Cool, huh? I ran out of my Oxycontin yesterday and I was a bit, uh, edgy this morning until my pain doc appt. Now I'm feelin' groovy and getting all kinds of work done.

uh...no, I didn't know that,  Hippie.  But thank you, I think.   I actually don't like the feeling I get when I take narcotic-type painkillers.  Even bourbon.  It is how I know I'm a true control freak, wired to the bone (errrr...brain).  I don't like that fuzzy feeling.   Yes, even bourbon.

Oh, and the "bedside manner of the day quote":   Well...its about the size of a golf ball, maybe bigger.  But, not like a softball, or anything gross, y'know.

Status: offline 		wow - i work in a surgery where we do the afore mentioned lithotripsies - and your stone must have been really soft to only need one treatment with the lithotripter.  Glad to hear that - those hard stones are a pain in the you-know-what.

and you will appreciate this - we had a patient come in who had a stone abit smaller than , and the shape of an M&M - stuck in his penis!!! The doctor put him to sleep, took a hemostat and pulled it out. Everyone in the room was wincing! .   Still can't see how he could pass that thing all the way from his kidney to the end of his penis, and not get it all the way out.    ....  Medicine is a science - not an art - hehehe.
