If you're a socialist what's not to like about the "U.N.?"

A socialist ROFLMAO! Aaahhh... that was funny [8D] .

I like the UN; you don't like the UN. There's a middle-ground somewhere in there. Welcome to the UN :-) .

Sorry kittinSol…but since popeye is secretly supplying me with rock for my isolationist wall I will exercise my security council right of veto.

Your announcement of welcome on the UN’s behalf will be regrettably hereby rescinded.

The report states that the UK should have a written constitution which would lay out both how the government would function and a guarantee certain rights.

People in the UK have been calling for exactly the same thing for a very long time. The existing bill of rights is simply an act of parliament and can be repealed by another. All sorts of other aspects of the UK government are simply based on tradition or centuries old royal decrees.

There hasnt been any call for this in the UK, sure its been mentioned, even by Gordon bBown,  but by and large there hasnt been a general call for change. Blair actually passed reforms to the UK Constitution while in office, altering many of the old traditions. There will be a new Supreme Court to take over the role of the Law Lords

Our laws are partially written but not codified. Most of it being passed down from common law from the past. It can all be found in statutes and written judgements.

The most important part of our constitution is parliamentary sovereignty as decreed in the 1689 bill of rights. This allows any parliament to pass laws, and not be bound by a previous government. Although the Monarch is known as the sovereign, sovereignty is held by parliament. The monarch can withold Royal Assent to a bill being passed, but this hasnt happened for around 300 years or so.

How could reforms to a UK Constitution be passed when no such thing exists? The UK government is cobbled together from the Magna Carta, acts of Parliament, the 1689 bill of rights and common law.

A written constitution would create a single supreme law of the land and would provide a place to enshrine basic human rights safe from the majority in parliament.

Jusr remember not to publicly call for the form of that government to be a republic because that is still treason under the Treason Felony Act of 1848.

The UN is my favourite social diners group. I imagine they have plenty of Ferrero Rocher at their swarays. Aye I learnt all I know about the UN social functions from a TV advert and I am actively engaging in Social Elite stereotyping.
I don't care they love it.[8|]

I fear for your safety because I've seen that film the translator and they'll come after you with their diplomatic immunity which means they can avoid paying the congestion charge.

Also I'm not sure how swaray is spelt having never been to one but I gave it my best shot.

soiree with some of those silly french punctuation marks over one or more of the vowels.

Just to prove my eight years of french weren't completely wasted.

Kittin, watch the News on t.v. tonight and see what a bang up job your "U.N." is doing in Zimbabwe.
Banki Moon said; "There has been too much killing and strife in Zimbabwe!"
Gee, ya think?
He figured that out all by himself did he?
The "U.N." never ceases to amaze me with their great gift of stating the obvious!
They can't even do their job in a fourth world country but,..................they want to tackle "global warming?"
What if we had a Fire Dept modeled after the "U.N.?"
They'd be discussing how to put out the fire 3 weeks after it burned itself out.

Raechard -> RE: Another reason the UN is a joke (6/23/2008 2:51:57 PM)

Merci

I heard some people talking on the train how they speak in one language but think in another and I thought that's nothing like me[:D]

"And after that we'll make 17 resolutions!"

Yeah the UN sure is totally fucked up... but it's better than the alternative.

The UN is heaven for swingers and other polyamorists; it's full of perverts.
Because of this, I am staggered by the level of distrust and dislike it encounters on collarchat.com.

Zensee, and what's the alternative, 60,000-100,000 highly paid desk jockeys in expensive suits have to actually find,....(gulp)....."jobs?"

Here is a link for you about the constitution reform act. Its interesting that parliament sought to reform something that didnt exist. Maybe they should have emailed you first huh. Interesting that you see a 1500 years of legal history as cobbled together.

http://www.dca.gov.uk/legist/constreform.htm

The treason act of 1351 predates the treason felony act by some 500 years. As for human rights we are protected by the European courts, as well as our own laws.

kittinSol -> RE: Another reason the UN is a joke (6/23/2008 3:26:13 PM)

Most UN staff are highly educated polyglots who battle with perilous paper-pushing situations on an everyday basis. Considering the risks they take, it's unfair to decry their salaries like this (especially since they cost you nothing. Nada. Zilch. Rien!).

I was thinking more like WW3. Seems GWB was thinking the same thing. Good thing the rest of the world has the UN.
