ORIGINAL: Alumbrado Some major religions pay people to read the Bible for them and tell the congregation what it means... others stand ready to kill on that basis of things that were never in the Bible, such as the King James added bit about killing witches, or Biblical interpretations that OK forced child brides and spousal abuse (nothing beautiful about those 'perceptions'), or the rewording of the 6th commandment... And many claim to literally follow the Bible, but are full of excuses as to why the Bible doesn't really mean what it clearly says, when their actions fail to match scriptural admonishments. Mark Twain had a great riff about the difference between 'practicing' Christians, and 'practical' Christians. From time to time I've heard Evangelicals and Fundamentalists state that Catholics, for instance, are discouraged from reading the bible (wrong)...or that other folks just listen passively and don't read for themselves (quite probable, but read below..) However, these same folks will believe everything their pastor states in a sermon, where he may be skipping from one passage to another in the Bible [cherry picking the passages that support his ideas], completely removing the context of the writings. And if you come up with a different interpretation, you'll soon find yourself being disciplined or even expelled from fellowship [this is one of the reasons why Bill Moyers left the Southern Baptist Convention.] thornhappy
