My law would be that anyone who wants to be a politician would not be allowed to run for any office -  ever!   Including the PTA -  or especially the PTA!

because, obviously, anyone who wants to be a politician is either crazy, or unfit for office due to mental defect.

Bethnai -> RE: If you could make a law... (6/25/2008 5:14:29 PM)

If you have your UM arrested then you freaking pay 175 a night for every night they are there.

Not too shabby.

I assume we'd have to draft our politicians then?

That might be worth it to a bunch of people I know...

jlf1961 -> RE: If you could make a law... (6/25/2008 5:30:29 PM)

Alright, I have one, but it is really going to disturb a lot of people, however, I do have valid reasons.

Before any person can hold an elected office in which laws can be passed that affect the people of a city, state or nation, will have served at least one 4 year term in the military, and have completed his term of service in an honorable manner.

Any elected official who fails to carry out actions for the public good will be subject to immediate recall and a prison sentence of not less than 10 years and no more than 25 years serving in labor camps for public works, such as road construction, flood control projects, highway maintainance.

I would also go so far as to make it mandatory for all to serve a two year term of military service or public service after completing school.

Those opting for the two years of military service will further have four years of reserve duty with the mandatory bi monthly training and two weeks annual service commitment.

Those who opt for public service will be placed in part time status in various jobs that may be required in the event of an emergency.

Finally, in conjunction with the above two laws, all college or technical school fees and tuition will become the responsibility of the government.

Termyn8or -> RE: If you could make a law... (6/25/2008 6:36:32 PM)

Nobody said this thread was a joke, so here I go.

The main problem with the "there should be a law" crowd is that every time they draft a bill it becomes four thousand fucking pages. Bills go around with all kinds or riders and detail, too much detail actually. Thus it requires lawyers to even determine what is legal and what is not. Just ask ex KPMG employees and they will tell you that even the lawyers can't do it.

So here is my law :

All bills presented to legistature or the executive branch, whether that be a Mayor, Governor or the President, will be limited to three pages. These pages shall be the standard 8½" by 11" paper normally used in offices, printing apparatus' and such. The text shall be either twelve point or ten point bold. Normal boundaries found on normal office documents shall be observed.This limitation shall apply to any and all bills, which if passed into law, could be used to criminally prosecute any person.

Each shall be structured to include the elements of the crime, penalties for the crime and consideration for any and all mitigating factors. Each bill shall be published in the print and eletronic media for the perusal of the Citizens. When there is any action taken on said bill, such as a vote or a stall in committe, this will be reported by all licensed media outlets. This shall be a requirement of their continued licensing.

Each law will be defined fully in the bill, and the element of the crime here is to submit a bill that is more in content than the Law provides.

Exception is if the originator, or another legislator adds pages with their opinion, but those pages shall be labelled opinion, and each of every one of them shall be made public by the same vehicle which the original ws presented. These opinions do not become law upon signing by the executive or a veto override, only the body of law cantained in the actual bill.

Punishment can range from being prevented from drafting or presenting any more bills, to ousting by the public. In which case special elections are held.

Any content found to be an attempt to obscure the meaning, spirit or necessity of the law shall be a criminally prosecutable offense, involving jail time and an automatic ousting from office.

Bills pertaining to complex dealing with commerce shall be given more leeway, while still limited it is understood that these things cannot be effectively regulated with a three page document. This strict limitation applies to laws which, if violated could cause the incarceration of the offender only. That includes any fines or other penalties which if not paid can cause incarceration of the offender.

Not sure about a law but I came home on a back country road this afternoon, 45 mph, all hills and curves, double yellow line plus no passing signs, plus deer crossing signs and deer. 5 motorcyclists decided the guy ahead of me turning into his driveway was delaying them. Passed the car behind me, me and the turning motorist by driving in the other lane. All 5 stupid of them and all going well over 75 is my guess,

Oh yeah, and they topped it off by not stopping at the stop sign but driving right through. Unfortunately since school is out, the local constabulary weren't sitting there to catch people running the stop.

I really wish the police had flagged them all.

Uhhhhhh... Termy... sweetie... whatinhell makes you think I was Joking?  If I'd been Joking, I woulda said something along the lines of "my law is that all fashion designers are required to make all their creations of a size that normal people can wear them, and at a price that someone other than Ivana Trump can afford it."

(Though I gotta admit, I really admire your own personal choice as well... )

GT,
You've never driven on the highways in Southern California have you? Out here, using your turn signal to indicate a lane change actually triggers every driver in the lane you want to be in to speed up in an effort to prevent said lane change.

At least they know what a turn signal is and how to actually turn it on.  Since I've moved to AR, I think I can count on one hand the number of drivers I've noticed EVER signalling before they make a major move.  I get HBP everyday over it[:D].  I'd like to have a giant hand that would come out of the top of my car and just smack them off the road.......aaaarrrggghhh....road rage?  Me?  No never[;)]...............luci

The parents of rude and out of control children have to attend "boot camp" and learn how to make them behave.

Evility -> RE: If you could make a law... (6/25/2008 8:04:37 PM)

If you are convicted of murder you shall be executed in exactly the same fashion as you murdered your victim. Fuck this "cruel and unusual" nonsense.

Edited to add: The victim's family get first crack at you.

Now as for the law I would pass - I would require a license to breed with a minimum IQ to be able to obtain it.

Good call. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith was once asked in an interview what was the strangest thing in the world to him. He answered "That you need a license to drive a car but anyone can be a parent."

Coming from him, that's a bit rich. Though he does have a beautiful daughter: lucky, he just made it by the skin of his teeth.

If you want to come and live in "Summerwind Land".....you will first have to pass a test that validates your ability to read, write and speak English.....

Vendaval -> RE: If you could make a law... (6/25/2008 9:25:42 PM)

No talking on a cell phone while driving.  A driver must have both hands on the steering wheel and use a portable head set if they are talking.

Termyn8or -> RE: If you could make a law... (6/25/2008 9:31:14 PM)

I haven't used two hands on a steering wheel after the day after I learned to drive - a car. A truck was a different story, I mean a big truck.

As a female, Term, I lack that extra appendage for steering the car.  [sm=car.gif]
