Yup I did the same thing. My waitress went on to ask if I wanted an orange coke or a root beer coke or a.... 

Here in Michigan they call it all "pop".....and no matter how many times I hear it it still sounds weird.

I was thinking of trying dark chocolate gelato in the root beer as well.

I agree with those who hold  this opinion, but would go a step further. Anything else but root beer and vanilla ice cream is PERVERSION, people

We used to ( in Chicago) call it a "Black Cow".
