As a child I never had a root beer float with anything other than chocolate ice cream. When I moved to Michigan I found that everyone here uses vanilla instead and never heard of using chocolate. I've also heard some people refer to the chocolate ones as "Black Cows". What kind of ice cream do you prefer in yours? (I still prefer chocolate...vanilla just tastes wrong)

Definitely vanilla!

Or french vanilla. Those are the best.

But, we sometimes switch out the rootbeer, and go with Vernors (sp? been a while) ginger ale.

I have to go with vanilla ice cream in a root beer float [;)]
Even though I love chocolate,  somehow I can't imagine chocolate tasting good with root beer!

Vanilla of course..... didn't know you could make a "root beer float" with anything else! [:D]

(Mmmmmm, french vanilla ice cream with flecks of vanilla bean in it......)

christine1 -> RE: Root Beer Floats...what kind of ice cream? (6/27/2008 8:06:13 AM)

i have to go with vanilla in rootbeer.

some fun variations are:
orange soda w/vanilla ice cream...tastes like a creamcicle
sprite or gingerale with any flavor sherbert...very fruity and refreshing
hot or cold coffee with vanilla, chocolate, whatever flavor ice cream that goes good with coffee is fun as well.

Vanilla or french vanilla icecream and it MUST be A&W rootbeer.

You poor, poor child.
Do this right now.
Go out and buy the best rootbeer you can find; and then buy the best vanilla ice cream you can find. Put vanilla ice cream in a large (tall) glass. Slowly poor chilled rootbeer over the top, (tilt the glass as if you were getting beer from a keg). There will be A LOT of foam. It can go way over the top of the glass before it even thinks of going over. It just sits there, like a two ince foam creature. You will have to stop every once in a while to allow the foam to settle. When the glass is as full as you can make it, get a straw, a spoon, and a napkin. Sip (guzzle), nibble, wipe. Repeat as necessary. Mmmmm....

Wow...am I the odd man out here or what????

My grandma made them with chocolate a time or two, but, I don't care for it. Sorry.

But ya know what? Who cares?

You like it. Enjoy it!  (said the girl who dipped her McDonalds french fries in bbq sauce and honey yesterday)

Or pour the root beer in a chilled tall glass about 3/4 full and then slowly add the ice cream. Still get that foam but less likely of it spilling all over, unless you feel like a kid and want to make a mess as you eat/drink the float!
I've always poured the pop over the ice cream and always got an overflow and a big mess but that's half the fun.
*bear-still a kid at heart*

Putting the ice cream in second always results in a big mess for me. And I don't even like a lot of ice cream in my float. Chilled glass...nice touch!!!

This brings me back to my grandparent's house.  Grandpop would walk around the corner and buy the ice cream.  We'd get ready to eat the floats in front of the tv on the coffee table - a treat in and of itself!

Thanks for the smile this morning!

Oh .. it has to be vanilla...

beargonewild -> RE: Root Beer Floats...what kind of ice cream? (6/27/2008 8:19:17 AM)

BARKEEP!!  a round of root beer floats for everyone.

purepleasure -> RE: Root Beer Floats...what kind of ice cream? (6/27/2008 8:19:26 AM)

This can be done with almost any kind of soda.  My faves are rootbeer, orange, grape, or cola... all with vanilla ice cream.

MizSexyVixen -> RE: Root Beer Floats...what kind of ice cream? (6/27/2008 8:20:17 AM)
