The payoff of having friends is that you have people whom you like, whom you can trust to answer you with a good working knowledge of things in your life that may be affecting you.

The cost is in having to think and not give a simple yet snarky answer because if you hurt a friend through thoughtlessness you may lose them.

Online or off, friendship is needed.

Look, in my self help book, "How to make friends and influence enemies" By Vlad the Impaler  there is nothing in there about people you can trust.... there is a lot in there about how to INSURE that no one would be foolish enough to betray you....

There is also the chapter on meeting people, but I have to contact Resident Sadist Employment service to find 500 psychotic blood thirsty warriors.

Of course this particular book was published in 1470.....

I blame it all on you and that Fox and Mulder comment.  You made me do it. You knew it was temptation beyond my ability to resist.  It was a set up, yeah, that’s it, it was setup the whole time.  Everyone one was in on it... the whole clique was in on it I bet.  That's the ticket, yeah...  a setup.

RS--wasn't there a group of fellow flakes that Mulder was a member of?

I wasn’t actually a big fan but I saw a few shows and their theatrical movie.  The "pink post” was more mix of “the humanity, the horror” from Apocalypse Now and some X-Files themes about that shadowy secret society that was manipulating the government and every once in a while, either a rebel in that society stepped in to helped Mulder expose something or others lead him astray or to conclusions they wanted him exposed to.  He was always trying to find out who was in that society (clique) or not because they held positions in the government around him.

Is that what you were thinking of?  Like Mulder's rebellious “contact” he signaled with tape on the window?

I am not worried so much about Fox and Scully, but all those wackos in Eureka.

Anyway, I can prove that all of you are real......

As to the question of "alleged" meetings and real-time friendships between folks on here, well, I don't think I have hallucinated all the people I've met here.  If that's the case, I want to know who ate all the food for my "make-believe" birthday party/CM meet & greet that "allegedly" took place at The Crucible on May 10th.  Damn.  I wonder if the "make-believe" cake I ate had any calories?  Who gave me the birthday spanking that made my ass all purple, black & blue?  Was that my "pretend" ass that was pictured in a thread about the "supposed" party?  I would've picked a sexier ass if it weren't my real one.  I guess I sent 46 "Thank-You's" to imaginary CM people in error then.  Damn...  I just can't win.

heyyyyyyyyy i missed a picture of your ass??  ~pout~  Now i am going to have to search around and try to track that one down!

Hey there, wenchie...  if you're really interested, I can let you see my pretend ass picture on the flip side.     But you have to be wearing 3-D glasses and a secret decoder ring.     *giggles*

Yep! Thanks, RS-- I didn't watch regularly either, but I remember some episodes with that crew--I think there were 3 or 4 members, and the shows were pretty funny.

Good Lord.  Seven pages and counting.
I'm tired; anyone care to tell me if a single post responded to the Op?

I did, in my first post (page3), as have several others (Mercnbeth was quite eloquent) . It is not a "fact" that this board is cliquey, therefore the opinions of those who don't believe such a clique "exists" are valid.

I'll boil it down and use small words:
-The "payoff" (for most here) of the style of posting you object to is simply that it allows people to get to know each other and friendships to start and grow. Friendship, esp those that become R/L, is one hell of a payoff IMO.
-The "cost" is that, apparently, certain people become offended when some of the 30 odd threads they start per day on a mishmash of subjects become derailed. Newsflash- I've never belonged to a message board that didn't suffer a certain amount of threadjackeritis, particularly if the OP has posted in a self serving or attention getting manner. Welcome to the internet.

As an aside, I cannot help but note that you have a tendancy to object to people doing some of the very things you do. We got a lecture on proper posting grammar during your slashy/speak, huge font phase; now you complain about people who post about real life things (like a fun time had with other members here) whilst subjecting the board to your personal drama and interpersonal familial and/or Dom search issues.

I respectfully suggest that you take a closer look at you own posts before throwing rocks in a glass house.

Not that I expect this post to be acknowledged, as I'm either on your ignore list or you simply don't read my responces to your posts.

Am I the only one that gets the genious of this sublime joke?

Doesn’t it seem ironic to post a complaint about people gleefully playing on the forums, casually saying high, meeting and making friends in the Polls and Other Random Stupidity forums?

This clique seems to feel its reason for existing is to run the boards. We have Mods for that -- why the need to add yoursleves en masse to the 'board authorities'?

If someone oversteps and attempts to run a thread or the boards as you put it, the MOD GODS typically are very quick to step in and remind them of who is the boss. Also by this very statement are you not making yourself one of those people that try and “run the boards?”

Why the need to bleat 'approval' of members of the clique?

It is natural to ‘back up your friends” especially if you feel they are being attacked in ANY way. It is also natural that people  consider each other friends and run in the same circle to have the same opinions on things, so often times it would/does appear as if they are “bleating approval” as you put it. However, I have also seen some of those very same people adamantly disagree with those very same people over issues that come up within the forums.

Why the need to 'broadcast' anything happening (allegedly) in real life?
The reality is some people here, are not here simply for the virtual connection but enjoy reaching beyond their computer screens and meeting in real life. You are correct there is a board called positive experiences, however; conversations tend take their own course and sometimes those courses should / need to include real life experiences even those of the platonic sort.

What's the payoff?
The payoff is that life is NOT lived in this virtual world and as human beings we need people in our lives that support us that is pay off and at times that is also the cost.

That being said OP let me say this, you sound very jaded and very jealous that you are on the outside looking in. You remind me of when one of my students says " So and so won't play with me, make them!"

Blessed be,
Nika

several did, why start a thread if your not going to read it.

Named the payoff?
yup

Named the cost?
I don't remember if anyone thought there was a cost to it or not.

Maybe if you go back and read the actually thread you will learn these answers all on your own.

Not sure why you think people should answer your questions...after all, you never did tell me what year you graduated. If you can't answer questions, why should others?
