It was at the Rialto - unbelievably good :-) . Thankfully, I didn't see the bill  .

Last night, I had: Parma Prosciutto, crisp artichoke, pistachios and aged Asiago followed by slow roasted Long Island duck with braised escarole, roasted fingerlings and Sicilian olives, accompanied by an absolutely unbelievable Australian Pinot Noir. The Charles Hotel on Harvard Square rocks  . I think it was more than $7 or $8 a gallon, but then again, "people today know the price of everything, and the value of nothing" (Oscar Wild). I win  .
The Aussies are doing decent Pinot Noir now? Cool. PN is my main red wine, and I typically drink Calis (Russian River Valley, primarily) and Oregons. A few Washingtons are good, and the Loonies are working on them up in Okanagon. I had a killer PN a few years back from, of all places, NY Finger Lakes (Dr. Frank). Tasted like it had a tiny bit of Brett, which I like sometimes. I'll also occasionally have a Burg, too. I like Vosne-Romanee, Pommard, the heavier wines from Burgundy normally.

Oh, Hippie, don't mention Burgundy, you're going to make me cry. They're beautiful wines. But the Aussie Pinot we had last night was better than decent: it was superlatively delicious and subtle, too. I just shouldn't have had that port to finish off supper: fuck knows I'm paying for it today  .

I know, Kitten. My standard for chardonnay is a 96 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenovettes from Jean-Marc Pillot. Oh, man. I paired with with grilled salmon with sour cream-dill sauce. Phenomenal. Look and see where Les Chenovettes is located vis-a-vis Le Montrachet.

I love a good Chablis Grand Cru, too. Favorite vinyard is Les Clos. (sp?)

Translation.... my horse gets much better milage than your car.  All you city type folks that have to have AC and heating and stuff are just spoiled....

Yeah..I apologize for my weakness. I should be able to tolerate 110-115 degrees of the Arizona summer for the next 3 months without AC.

higher gas prices in Chicago mean:

cabs/taxis will once again raise fares - it's already $2.25 plus $1 surcharge since it's above a certain price
touring indie bands won't be doing much traveling
we're expecting higher utility bills this winter which means poorer families might not have heat
rents are on the rise
higher pricing on menu / delivery

for me, it means:
stretching out my monthly food bill despite rising food costs
curtailing trips / travels to shows out of state
barely using my gas heat this winter (good thing i have 2 electric heaters)
crossing my fingers in hopes public trans doesn't raise fares

Times like this I smile... I have solar/wind, and diesel, about to start manufacture of $1.20 fuel.
Next year I want to get additional 900 watts, for $6K...not cheap, but can charge more batteries.

Dom I know some of that is valid. Some of us are quite capable of foraging, hunting, bartering, etc. I hunt ( passably ) and my garden is huge, and I understand that benefit of all of that. But I live where that is pretty much the norm, as well as coastal waters and fishing being abundant.

However...now pay tenshun k? A lot of people do not have nature's bounty at their doorsteps nor are they equipped to even engage in such activities. I am a strong believer in accountability and work ethic, but when you already are just barely getting by, with kids to feed ( another thing you and I don't have to address ) gas prices are truly financially crippling.

Aynne, I realize that gas prices are high which is why I say supplement the income. Im not trying to be an asshole here or to piss on anyones parade - but if they are truly in danger of not having heat this winter, or not having food on their kids tables etc then they don't need to be posting on this forum. Instead, their "in front of the computer time" should be spent:
a) Trying to get freelance work on a site like elance.com or guru.com
b) Searching monster.com for a better paying job
c) Listing things on Ebay or some other online marketplace.
d) Taking a free course to get some credential such as CompTia's A+ or Microsoft MSCE or Cisco CCNA that will get them a lucrative position or the abilities to freelance for extra cash.
e) Going online in search of the knowledge needed for some other marketable skill whether it is web design, herbal soap making, etc. For christs sake on my side business, I have a client who literally works from her home and grosses $10,000+ a month selling reusable cloth maxipads! (No Im not kidding, she makes cloth maxipads and sells them to the green crowd online!)
f) Posting ads for some service on Craigslist - regardless of whether that service is typing term papers, painting rooms, cleaning out garages, tutoring students, or rendering the services I joked about earlier.
or
g) Filling out the online applications for Walgreens, Home Depot, or anyplace else you can pick up a part time job to make some money to bridge the defecit.

All of those things will help. All of the above is a proactive step towards solving the problem. I am here and post a lot because I have the time to kill between other things as I wait for call backs, or for an appointment or whatever. I consider the time spent here "wasted" it is a diversion to kill time between other things. However, I know my light bill is paid so the power will be on when I get home, I know where my next meal is coming from, and I know that when I stick the card in the pump its gonna turn on and my gas tank will be filled no matter how much the total is. If someone doesnt have that security, then respectfully instead of whining about it here, they should help themselves by using one of the suggestions above...

As for the part about natures bounty... Even in an urban environment there is plenty to eat. You would be amazed what you can find in an urban dumpster. You would be amazed at what grocery stores throw out. You would be amazed the goodies that can be found on the curb, just waiting to be picked up and taken to the scrap metal dealer for cash or to be fixed and sold. I know because I did it once on a bet. Myself and an equally conservative buddy had a "discussion with a bleeding heart" which resulted in a $500 bet... The bet was that we could make $1000 in one weekend starting with $20. Just from the things people had thrown out we made over $1600 IN ONE NIGHT and part of the next day... We hit the "free" section of craigslist and picked up whatever was worth picking up and then sold it through an auction house or pawned it. We drove through a nearby community that was having a "clean up day" and picked up an entertainment center that brought $75 at the auction, a fairly ratty couch that brought $50, a lawn mower that needed 10 minutes of tinkering to get running that brought $20,  boxes of micellanious and assorted household junk, you name it.... We took various metal scrap in, basically anything metal from the lawnmowers not worth fixing, to old bicycles and bedframes, to wire and pipe scrap, appliances, etc (the real money is in aluminum, copper, and brass though) and we took in two loads worth to the tune of $300 some dollars. We even hit the HEB dumpster where we found a case of perfectly good strawberry jam that needed only to be wiped off with a damp sponge because one jar had broken and the store people apparently didnt want to fuck with it, cases and cases of various canned goods with missing or soiled labels or dents , perfectly good meat that was still in its expiration date, etc...

Dumpster diving may not be glamourous but neither is watching your kids starve. In any event, the net haul from our little experiment -between friday night and Saturday afternoon - over $800 each plus a shitload of free groceries, and the payoff from the $500 bet from the bleeding heart...

If anyone doesnt believe me, try it yourself sometime. If you have a crisis of conscious about taking the free stuff etc and then selling it, donate the money to a charity and donate the food to a pantry. We didnt, I actually used the money I made to buy a purse for my gf and a romantic little weekend in Galveston. Dale stuffed most of his take down a strippers panties for blowjobs in the champagne room but hey to each their own... If you wnat to try it and donate the money do so... You will be surprised though at whats out there free for the taking....

Personally?

I won't be able to afford food, especially fresh food.

I'll be forced to leave the heat off altogether and won't be able to substitute electric heaters for my gas furnace, as my electric company is dependent on oil.

It gets very cold here; I may lose water as the pipes freeze.  I may contract pnemonia.

The neighborhood will lose more and more retail businesses, more safety personnel will be laid off and crime will begin to take root.  No more leaving the door unlocked to run to the store.

Since I won't be able to look to the cops to protect me, I may have to consider investing in a concealed carry permit, handgun and shooting lessons.  I dread this possibility.

None of my neighbors remember the Great Depression.  I expect to see all sorts of bad behavior, from hording to outright violence.

There are dark days ahead.

candystripper

if you give up or cut down on those cigarettes you were asking people how to quit in the health and safety forums; you know the ones that you light, forget about, burn out and then you light another one...

you actually bragged about how you were never going to quit...

$5 or more for a pack of stogies, or a plate of food, etc..  the choice seems pretty simple to me!

it's the elderly, the disabled and those on fixed incomes who make good choices for themselves as far as spending goes,  that i worry about the most.

as for me, i'm self-employed, i'm also a single mother with no child support and considered to be a part of the 'working poor'.  i have the options of raising my rates and no one would bat an eyelash because i'm far more reliable, do a better job than, and bid way below my competitors; as a matter of fact, i gave everyone notice last month that their rates would be going up in january, only $5 because i'm not a money-monger, and that should be all i need.

i get 28-33 mpg on my looks like crap but runs great and has a/c as well as heat, car.  i can't do my jobs relying on public transportation and while i know i too may have to quit smoking, like it or not, i'm not out running around like chicken little and claiming the sky is falling or that i'll die from it all or that the world will come to an end.

so while all those people i know are complaining about the price of gas, as well as being in debt up to their eyes balls in finance charges on credit cards, mortgage payment, etc., yet still getting their hair dyed, driving their jags, mercedez, etc.,  i'm driving my not so asthetically pleasing car, working a little bit harder, skimping a little bit more here and there, paying that extra buck on my rental increase, for food, etc., i shake my head and have to wonder; where the fuck are their priorities!

i've made it a habit of living within my means, even if that means i go hungry so my kiddo can eat; been there, done that, as well as handwashing all my clothes and hanging them to dry all over the house, as well as wearing three layers of clothes to bed just to keep warm when i couldn't afford the heat.

the sky isn't falling and life will go on, just like it did back in the days of the great depression.

no f**** way.....

won't hardly make working worth it as i don't earn that much more over that.

i commute 100 miles round trip a day for work and there is no commuter system from where i live to work.

i can only hope that things change for the better in the very near future.

oh, and instead of investing in a concealed handgun permit and a handgun as well as lessons on how to shoot it to keep you safe, how about investing in an electric blanket to keep you warm(runs about $3 per month to keep you warm, with it running 8 hours per day; and a 12 guage shotgun will keep you plenty safe at home, no lessons in shooting required; just be careful of the kick, and i can almost guarantee you'll hit your target every time!

if you're afraid of your pipes freezing, and you're a home-owner, then you know you can insulate them now for next to nothing, of course, you won't be able to be a girly-girl crawling under the house or the sub-flooring but it's worth the dirt and the sweat if you really feel that it's going to be that big of a problem.

I think I'll be fine.

At one point in my life- I was living out of my car. Ever since then, I have busted my butt to get ahead, from having two and three mundane kind of jobs, to learning how to airbrush and do minor carpentry and welding for a job- to make extra money.

I have the cash flow now to get a better car- a better living situation, and a pile of stuff I don't need- but I feel bad spending it.. and instead just squirrel it away in all kinds of CD's and random saving ideas my bank comes up with. Besides... I like my crappy little truck- even if my brother does refer to it as the 'S.S.Failboat' it gets 25 to the gallon. ^_^

sounds like its time to get creative in what you can and are willing to do for work then because i'll be damn if i'd commute 100 miles to work a day, round trip or not, let alone for $7 per hour.

i can make $20 per hour scrubbing toilets, $20 per hour mowing lawns(using their equipment), and the guy down the road averages $300-$500 in 3-5 hours using only a stencil and two cans of spray- paint, going door to door and offering to paint their street number on their curb for $10.
