Franken and Garafolo haven't been on AA for some time. Can't say I find most of the hosts exactly riveting, Rachel Maddow is and Ron Reagan did a week filling in a month or so ago that was very good listening. However I find it much better background than the local conservative talk radio outlet.

Franken still sucks, and isn't influencing anyone... the people I mentioned brought progressive humor to millions upon millions, and they did it with talent, not by trying to be more ignorant and obnoxious than Rush..

The fact that some people can't tell the difference and insist that Franken must be good because he's on their side is just plain scary.

Just to bring ya up`ta speed buddy,he`s been off the air running for senate in Minnesota for over a year...You`re welcome.

And Franken has always been funny and an affecting debater.

Look how he cleans the floor w/ Ann Coulter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=susZ2ceEHwk

And he does it calmly,w/ class and humor........He`d keep the VW,lol.

Knowing you as humorless,I`m not surprised that you don`t find him funny. His SNL days were also hilarious.

You find no humor in the people I listed? Why am i not surprised. Are they all a bunch of neo-cons too?

Your reactionary hatemongering in that broken record fashion is sooooo last century.

The problem with Air America (aside from finding adequate market penetration) is the fact that liberals don't tell people what they want to hear... instead, they stick to these "fact" things...

and they are always willing to make up new "facts" on the spot. Liberals lie just as much as their conservative opponents. They just haven't found anyone who can be entertaining on the air. Love him or hate him, Rush gets people to listen to his show. Air America or any of the others that have tried haven't been able to do that yet with any serious consistency.
Musicalboredom, I used to listen to Rush at work and I often swore even he couldn't believe the shit he was spewing. You may be closer to the truth than you know.

Got any examples???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOtyigg5BZw&feature=related

Rush is a lying cocksucker who has little respect for truth or facts,....or the intelligence of his listeners.

He has to make things up like "75% of minimum wage earners are just pimple faced kids"and implies they don`t really count when discussing employment stats.

Why is that?

I love Franken`s imatation of Rush.It has always niddled the limbots.

~A.Franken-"ya don`t want to swallow anything from Rush`s butt,ya just don`t"..~

Janeane Garofalo.... I mean dear god, who can sit and listen to her rant for an hour? I'd rather have a root canal.

For a radio show to be successful, it needs to be entertaining to keep the listeners tuned in. Air America is not entertaining.

Right-wing radio also knows how to get their crowd involved and emotional. Look what they did during the immigration debate last year. The phone and email system at the Capital crashed and they DID stop that bill from passing. Has liberals been able to accomplish such an organized feat? Not even close...not even when they control the congress.

Did you guys ever consider that the reason that these Neocon Jerk-offs *seem to be* good on the radio, is because they limit themselves to talk-radio on pretty much insignificant stations?

It's because they can't fucking rock out and make music like the libs.

Or, like the great John Kay once wrote:

quote:

...
You've been telling lies so long
Some believe they're true
So they close their eyes to things
You have no right to do

Just as soon as you are gone
Hope will start to climb
Please don't stay around too long
You're wasting precious time

Like gay marriage in NY just needed to wait out Joe Bruno ( Buh-Bye Joe! ), all it takes is time...

Hey, the Germans got out from under Hitler.

And they got out from under the commies.

"What goes around, comes around"

I already said I don't listen to Rush. In fact i don't listen to the radio at all unless I am stuck in a car for a couple of hours. But it really is the height of ignorance to compare his audience to goose stepping Nazis. The biggest threat to independent thought in the last 50 years came from the Left in the form of political correctness. PC is Newspeak designed to remove any thought considered ugly by the Left.

Political correctness the biggest threat to independent thought since 1958? Leaving aside that political correctness isn't such a thing, you're claiming it is worse than these things:
religious extremism (all kinds)
anti intellectualism
superstition
racism and discrimination
decline of independent journalism
HUAC
Your window just barely missed him but he was so outrageous in his attempts to destroy independent thought I'll include him, Joe McCarthy.

So is not using racial slurs and deragatory statements really worse for independent thought than all of that?

Don't they say that anti-PC is the new PC? Progress is always followed by reaction. As for Rush Limbaugh, I'm thinking a large cream pie.

Limbaugh understands his medium, and is very good at what he does. He would have risen to the top of any radio genre he chose. If he expressed the progressive point of view, it would be the conservatives trying to muzzle and mock him.

Well I'll admit that 50 years may have been an overzealous number on my part. Religious extremism, superstition, anti-intellectualism (of which both the Right and Left have been guilty of), and racism aren't new phenomena. I would say that at least in the West, we've advanced quite a bit away from those ways of thinking.

As for the decline of independent journalism....bullshit. Independent journalism hasn't declined. We just get our news from different sources now. Journalism is changing, but I wouldn't call it a decline.

McCarthism didn't destroy independent thought. It was a reaction to very well founded fears of Soviet aggression. The 60's were a backlash to that, so independent thought prevailed.

Of course none of what you said addressed my main point, which was the idiocy of comparing Rush Limbaugh fans to Nazis. I get a little sick of the gall that people have to compare anyone that disagrees with them to Hitler and the Nazis.

Political correctness isn't new either. It used to be called politeness. But you are the one who out of no where came up with politeness is the worst threat to independent thought of the last 50 years. There was no previous mention in this thread and the jump from calling Rush's fans nazis to there is not one that is obvious to me.

As to your claims on independent journalism not being in decline, bullshit. Consolidation and closure of media sources means that we have many fewer sources of news and those that we do have are, mostly, either under the tight grip of conglomerates or groups with axes to grind. Consider the peculiar entity known as the Washington Times. No rational person with any other option would use that obviously biased newspaper as a source of news but people in this forum post topics based on articles from it on a regular basis.

McCarthy was an attack on independent thought. He waved the blank list around demanding that everyone believe exactly what he believed. His attacks on the Watkins committee and Senators Margaret Smith and Ralph Flanders showed that he would tolerate no independent opinions. Senator Smith's Declaration of Conscience speech from June of 1950 made clear that she believed McCarthy was attacking in her words "The right of independent thought."

I agree with that 100%. I really do get tired or people using "PC" as a rebuttal to being called out. I hear it all the time. Someone will spout some hateful rant then when called out on it just laugh it off with some often-repeated "anit-pc" rhetoric. Being polite and respectful isn't a political platform -- it's just decency. Being polite or respectful never means not expressing an opinion or that everyone must agree. I disagree with people all of the time. Sometimes I change my mind after hearing the ofter side but usually I just disagree and state where I find disagreement. I don't yell or scream or cast derogatory insults -- I simply state my position. I don't find wanting people to do the same suggestive of wanting to hamper their freedom of speech.

.....er........Patriot Act?

....the biggest threat to independent thought is when those with the loudest voices make the debate emotional. Emotions, when applied to large political issues, tend to cut down debate, 'you're with us or against us' for instance.
True independent thought is the enemy of extremists and power grabbers everywhere, left or right wing, Islamic or Christian.........you may have noticed 'left' wing attempts to stifle independent thought, but don't buy into the propaganda that the 'right' wing is in any way more sympathetic to it. They are just as likely as the left to try to find ways to make disagreement with them socially difficult.

Political correctness and politeness are not even close to the same thing. It's impolite for me to take my shoes off on an airplane. It's impolite to curse in a public place when women and little old ladies are around. It's impolite if I don't hold the door for someone. It's impolite for me to spit on the sidewalk or blow my nose at the dinner table.

I don't consider it to be impolite to use words like crippled, retarded, blind, deaf, etc. I don't consider it impolite to recognize that race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation are real differences and not abstract notions made up by meanies. Political correctness has nothing to do with being polite. It's a way of glossing over the truth and perpetuating lies in order to make someone feel better.

McCarthy was a zealot to be sure. But independent thought was not destroyed by his brief place in history.

Your use of the Washington Post as an example of the decline in independent journalism is just silly. Newspapers are always biased, and they always have been. The very fact that you attack people for reading it proves to me that you feel you should control where people get their information from. I don't call that allowing independent thinking. It's a bias, and we all have them.

It's impolite to refer to people by terms they find offensive or derogatory. You don't want to be a called a redneck honky and they don't want to be called crippled. Failing to honor that is impolite.

McCarthy was a zealot to be sure. But independent thought was not destroyed by his brief place in history.

He destroyed careers and caused deaths in pursuit of 'commies' who didn't exist. He attempted to make simple membership in left of center organizations cause for discharge from the military and from jobs in entertainment and industry. If that isn't an attack against the freedom to think whatever you want I don't know what is.

I didn't use the Washington Post as an example of anything. I used the Washington Times, owned by a self declared messiah who, while a foreign citizen and not resident in this nation, is allowed to involve himself in our politics because he is on the right while any intimation that such things might be going on in the shadows on the left results in screams of treason. A paper that simply ignores proof that it printed anything incorrect. A paper that has acted as a mouthpiece for the right wing since at least the mid 80's with no attempt at presenting a balanced view of the world.

Difference between Right wing Talk Radio and Left wing Talk Radio is Right wingers make a profit for the station.
Not a Rush Fan, unless it's the Rock Group Rush.
That said there are two political talk radio hosts I can take for longer than about half an hour.
Neal Bortz and Herman Cain
