By far shattering every previous record in broadcasting, Rush Limbaugh signed a $400 million dollar contract with Clear Channel and Premiere Radio. The contract goes through 2016.

Comedy is like taste in men: there's no discussing it, really :-p .

Which records were shattered?  Howard Stern's deal with Sirius was for $500 million.

Like I said... what's tragic to us is hilarious to others [&:] .

I guess there really is a market for someone who needs vaigra to play golf.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Right-wing radio apparently still doing well (7/2/2008 2:45:43 PM)

I thought Rush was mildly entertaining in the early and mid 90's.  But he just started to bore me.  I found G. Gordon Liddy's show a lot more entertaining.  Liddy is a funny SOB.

kittinSol -> RE: Right-wing radio apparently still doing well (7/2/2008 2:50:06 PM)

I heard he was a bit of a junkie, good old Rush. And that he got married three times. THREE times? That's not very serious now, is it? Marriage is a serious institution, not to be taken lightly .

He should be marched over to the reconditioning center pronto [8D].

The explanation for this might be related to the thread stating America's the world leader in drug abuse.....[;)]http://www.collarchat.com/m_1979214/tm.htm

Nice catch [:D] .

I wonder if TSG will get a copy of the contract. I'd like to see how it's structured.

Yup. Rush was addicted to Oxycontin. Even did some illegal "Dr. shopping" to get his fix. (Of course, about the same time this was coming to light, he was slamming Jerry Garcia, of the Grateful Dead, who had just died, for being a "druggie.") Rush also speaks on a regular basis about the "sactity of marriage" and is a HUGE supporter of the "Defense of Marriage Act." He's a bigot, he's a sexist, he's a hater... and obviously a hypocrite...so naturally, fools flock to his show like flies to a fresh cowflop.

$400 million for that? P.T. Barnum was right. "There's a sucker born every minute."

I always had this thought that Rush started doing this bit and was in real life a HUGE liberal just doing something along the lines of "The Colbert Report."  He saw people were taking him seriously and just sort of shrugged his shoulders at making that much money by making up the most absurd thing he can imagine and saying it on the radio.  Maybe he laughs every month when he gets a huge check at the idiots that agree with his absurdities.

Just thought it would be funny if that's the way it was.

All of which makes it triply humiliating that left wing radio couldn't get an equal market share against bufoons like Limbaugh.

A live remote from the pound would have been refreshing as compared to Rush et al.  and what did Franken and cadre do?  Tried to beat them at their own game...[8|]

Notice that George Carlin never had that problem.

bipolarber -> RE: Right-wing radio apparently still doing well (7/2/2008 5:19:50 PM)

The problem with Air America (aside from finding adequate market penetration) is the fact that liberals don't tell people what they want to hear... instead, they stick to these "fact" things... so they're limited in their ability to appeal to crazed, religious, gun totin', gay bashin,' assholes... (i.e. the bulk of undereducated America)

Gotta love Rush for one thing though: he does keep the Republican stereotype... of the cigar smoking, fat, white, angry male who only cares about his money, and shoving his religion down other people's throats (in that order)... alive and well!

Alumbrado -> RE: Right-wing radio apparently still doing well (7/2/2008 5:30:41 PM)

Notice that George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, Dick Gregory, John Belushi,, Tom Lehrer, Margeret Cho, Spike Lee, Kevin Smith, H.L.Mencken, Frank Zappa, Randy Newman, et al. didn't seem to have the problem that Franken had in getting an audience.

[sm=rofl.gif] "they stick to these 'fact' things."  OMG that's precious.  LOL.  Air America's problem was that they sucked.  People don't listen to talk radio for news.  Talk radio is entertainment.  It's background noise while you're at work.  The bulk of America is moderate.  It's not crazed right-wingers.  Moderates don't want to listen to negative, pretentious assholes like Al Franken and that ugly, self righteous twit Janeane Garafolo.  Garafolo likes to blame her lack of movie deals on the stupid public too.  It hasn't nothing to do with the fact that she sucks at being an entertainer.

and they are always willing to make up new "facts" on the spot.  Liberals lie just as much as their conservative opponents.  They just haven't found anyone who can be entertaining on the air.  Love him or hate him, Rush gets people to listen to his show.  Air America or any of the others that have tried haven't been able to do that yet with any serious consistency.
Musicalboredom, I used to listen to Rush at work and I often swore even he couldn't believe the shit he was spewing.  You may be closer to the truth than you know.

Owner59 -> RE: Right-wing radio apparently still doing well (7/2/2008 8:16:11 PM)

Air America has been growing faster then Rush`s show ever did,in it`s beginning.

Rush has been on the air, building an audience for 20 plus years.

His early years, the 1st ten were nowhere.I remember he sold Snapple soda and those "vocabulary building"tapes for guys who spoke poorly and other low end adverts.

In the few short years AA has been on the air, they`ve grown well and are in good financial shape and they aren`t even a major broadcast outfit, like WCBS,WNBC,or WABC radio. They have a huge "internetz" audience as well.

The ney sayers(wacky neo-cons) have been predicting AA`s downfall from the beginning .They say it so often now that it`s getting boring.

Just the fact that Air America is brought up when talking about Rush and talk radio is enought to show it`s relivance.

They don`t have to make as much money or have as many listeners to be affective and a good counter weight to the rightists.

Alumbrado -> RE: Right-wing radio apparently still doing well (7/2/2008 8:28:34 PM)

Franken still sucks, and isn't influencing anyone... the people I mentioned brought progressive humor to millions upon millions, and they did it with talent, not by trying to be more ignorant and obnoxious than Rush..

The fact that some people can't tell the difference and insist that Franken must be good because he's on their side is just plain scary.
