That was too funny. I guess I should have expected that type of remark from a women from the U.K. Anyway I think you are right on!

Sincerely,

Submit? Hell no. But I'd beat him a bit if he begged nicely. *evil grin*

No way!
I don't do dead people!

Ok, if he was alive and modern, maybe, depending on if he was crazy or not and if the stories were exaggerated for interest of if the were more real.

I think it is one of those situations it is so tempting that I would have to say no, though the whole time I would be thinking yes. When something is that tempting it generally means  I will get into lots and lots of trouble. Though I tend to agree I doubt he truly did a lot of the things he was accused of.
I tend to think a lot of his writings while sexual in nature tend to be a satire of sorts. Of how the French had tried to distance themselves from the hedonistic extravagances of the nobility. Not to mention the hypocrisy of people in general, and those whom are in power. But at the same time his writings tend to encourage those of us that feel the need to hide or oddities and proclivities to not think you are the only one.
I think I am looking too much into it though.

Ummm, no... after doing a bit of research on the Marquis I've come to the conclusion that he wasn't quiet all there and sanity is a requirement for me.

No way.

hardbodysub -> RE: Would you submit to the Marquis de Sade? (8/18/2008 3:01:04 PM)

No.

Two reasons:

(1) He was a sadist. I'm not a masochist.

(2) He was a he. I am not submissive to any male.

Technically speaking .. even "Sadism" isn't all that old The German psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing introduced the terms "Sadism" and "Masochism" into the medical terminology in his work Neue Forschungen auf dem Gebiet der Psychopathia sexualis ("New research in the area of Psychopathy of Sex") in 1890.

As 'softness' points out, the Marquis was a writer of fiction. He was politically and, perhaps, monetarily motivated. A minor league aristocrat he also had a goal of poking fun at religious hypocrisy. His torture references, and stories, were inspired from the Inquisitor's Handbook. The fact that he sexualized torture and admitted that giving and receiving pain aroused him was what made him unique. That is, 'unique' is writing about it, and publishing it for the 'masses'.

In his time sexual torture and hedonistic pleasures of the flesh was a franchise limited to the hierarchy of the Church and the ruling class. His crime was letting it be know to the general public. You can say he was the Larry Flint of his day. Creating 'buzz' for his work by making its politically incorrect subject matter.

Random side-note threadjack, but a really interesting literary/psychoanalytic approach to masochism and sadism as per presentd by Sacher-Masoch and de Sade is Gilles Deluze's Coldness and Cruelty. It's in a handy dandy volume titled Masochism, and it's that essay with Venus in Furs. Not necessarily stuff I'd apply to the practice of sexual masochism and sadism in real life (though some of it, sure), but it really digs in to the political and aesthetic implications of Sacher-Masoch and de Sade's work as a form. Really great stuff. Though the hetero-normativity of Deleuze's psychoanalytic interpretation of Leopold's 'masochism' makes me kind of angry, but I digress....

I believe I already did and divorced him (or one with quite sadistic inclinations as well.)  Do I miss it?  Yes.  A masochist without a sadist is like pasta without parmesan cheese, or mornings without coffee.

On that note, time for breakfast....

AnnaOfAramis -> RE: Would you submit to the Marquis de Sade? (9/8/2008 5:04:10 AM)

God, no!!
This girl is not a masochist, so she would stay well the hell away from him!

Wheldrake -> RE: Would you submit to the Marquis de Sade? (9/8/2008 12:34:18 PM)

I doubt the Marquis de Sade would find much use for a male submissive with very limited French language skills... so no, I don't think it would be in the cards even if he were still fit to swing a riding crop. On the other hand, I'd love to discuss philosophy with him (preferably not in the bedroom). We could converse through an attractive female interpreter that he could jab with pins whenever we weren't busy affirming mutually held views on the non-existence of the gods and the cultural subjectivity of morals.
