Reading through all of the responses has been interesting. I, like pretty much any American, am the umpteenth generation of immigrants to this country. I don't have a problem with immigrants - I enjoy the cultural diversity - it is part of what makes this country such a blessing! What I DO have a distinct problem with is those who are here illegally & take advantage of things that MY hard-earned tax dollars support - medical assistance, social assistance, and education. Why should they reap the benefits of all these programs without contributing a dime themselves? My children's education should suffer so that limited funds can be funelled to others who don't contribute? The family down the street is on hard times - they work hard at low-paying jobs, but need some help. They were turned away for food assistance - resources are tapped! On the other end of the street are some folks that I know good & damned well are here illegally. Guess what, they got food assistance! Their kids go to the same schools as my own. They get free lunch at school, too. No, I don't think they should be left to starve, but I DO believe they should become CITIZENS & CONTRIBUTE. Their paychecks are under the table - there are none of the deductions that I or any other American pay. They don't pay land taxes or school taxes. They don't contribute to the systems they are draining. It's a very real problem - and not just for those of us along the border states. Some of you seem to be ok with all of this. I don't think it's right. I don't think it's fair to those who are citizens, who need assistance, but who are turned away because the systems are overwhelmed with those who are NOT citizens. Really? You're ok with that? pls note: my use of "you" is not directed at whoever it was I hit "reply" on
