Thanks again for posts. For those which seem a bit negative. a) Were not moving just because our economy is poor, we have both dreamed of moving since a small age. and b) we both intend on doing a working holiday and then trying to get citizenship at a later stage. Were not scroungers, we love to work, and feel that we would be better valued in Canada. I'm not talking about the skills gap, I'm talking about the spirit of the people. Have you read anything about Britain in the last 10yrs? It's rolling downhill and isn't stopping, and I for one am middle class, and do not want to bow down to the chav's any longer.

Chokealone, I don't see anyone trying to be negative but in fact, realistic. It's not an easy process, it takes time, patience and it's not something that everyone qualifies for. It took me 7 years to get qualified to immigrate to Australia and I went to school there, have friends there and had someone willing to sponsor me. Of course, my luck being what it is, as soon as I qualified, I met Lumus and moved to Canada. :)

If you're serious about immigrating, look into it, check resources and don't be surprised if the answer is "No". Check with a Canadian immigration lawyer or a immigration consultancy service like Canreach. And keep in mind that there are a few people here that have already done the immigration route or are in the middle of it.

Chockalone my intention was not to sound negative ..I do not know you or your history or claim to understand your reasons and  did not know you had a SO ....just wanted to provide some of the realities here since I wrongly assumed you wanted to come here alone since you gave no indications otherwise in your post.  .

As someone else said the healthcare programs are run provincially  when my adult son who is Canadian    moved from Ontario to BC  his health card  from Ontario was not recognized in BC  so he had to put in the 3 month wait there ... there is a good demand in Ontario for IT professionals and the salaries  depending on level of  experience might be a lot higher than the 20 per hour

This job board may be of interest to your SO  though most of the work appears to be on contract   and covers US and Canada but it might give him an idea of the salaries  http://www.pegsoft.com/pages/job_board.php.

For yourself though most of the work around animals do not pay that high ...but opportunities would exist to get into that larger pet stores where customers shopping at are allowed to take their pets or you could find something  in another field  and get your enjoyment of animals through volunteering with animal rescues which is what I did for a number of years such as tranporting to adoption groups, helping with bathing and grooming, and fostering...Ontario is one of the most per friendly provinces in particular with housing as the Ontario Tenancy Act makes any no pet clauses in apartment rental agreements void.  thought municipal laws can dictate the number of pets allowed on the premises, most camping resorts and many motels accepts pets and there are many free run large dogparks and even beaches for  dogs....Quebec on the other hand is no where near as pet friendly.and can very difficult to find rental housing if you have a pet.

except to point out that the discrepancy between the time it takes to get one's health card may be due to the different regulations in each province, as the health plans are provincial plans, not federal.

That is a good point; I forgot that they were provincial programs.  We are in Alberta, so there was no delay for me to receive health care.

Also a good point about the weather (which is my favorite part); we were below -40 for a couple weeks this past winter.  There were a couple days with -56.

Oh right, sorry I don't have any stereotypes of them, apart from the Mountie's ''they always get their man''. Do you travel to anywhere nice?

Vancouver is a fantastic city. Eminently livable. The economy in Alberta is supposedly booming. Haven't been to Toronto, but Montreal is a lovely city as well, and it's not too far from NYC. Some excellent wines are being made in the Niagara area of Ontario and the Okanogon area of British Columbia. Seattle's only about 3 hours south of Van. Portland's about 3 more hours. San Francisco is a short plane ride from Seattle. I have some friends in Vancouver.

I am British, living in Britain. I will be leaving for the United States as soon as it is practical. Not only does it offer a better standard of living, and in my opinion better people, culture and environment on the whole, there are states where a person can actually largely be free to live their own life. I am legally prohibited from living my life the way I want to in this country, on a hundred different counts. And things look set only to get worse, with ever more areas of my life set to come under government control.

Granted..it's been 10 yrs or so since I was in T.O...but it is one of my favorite cities!  Alberta, Sask, BC... gorgeous! I havent been to Montreal since the summer olympics (1976?).  NS is lovely, as was NB.  All of them different, but amazing.

(still havent seen the Northern LIghts though...)

Awww... this past spring all we had to do was go sit in our hot tub to see the Northern Lights.  One night it was really good; it looked like angels dancing across the sky.

The first time I saw the Northern Lights, as a child, it was in Idaho. I didn't know what they were at first and thought it was the end of the world as described in the Bible...... I freaked out and panicked. It took me all night to go to sleep.

They'r eerie, totally silent when it looks like there should be all sorts of noise with them. Coolest thing I ever saw!

At the moment I think it is. Found out that vet nurse technicians are needed asap in BC, so am looking into moving there. They don't need I.T people though, which poses a worry.
