Yup,another silly elected official making wild ,reckless statements.

Was is just another weakling democrat, you know,"helping the terrorists"?

Or did the odd republican finally man-up and call for troop withdrawals?

Nope, this particular politician was the leader of Iraq, Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2265376/Iraqi-prime-minister-seeks-timetable-for-American-withdrawal.html

He basically gave two choices.

1. Get out now.

2.Make a timetable for when you`re going to get out.

It`s pretty clear that our mission in Iraq is over and it`s time to leave.

They want us out.We want us out.

Time to get out.

Discuss....

Unfortunately, regardless of who said it, there is this one fact:

quote:

BAGHDAD - Iraq's national security adviser said Tuesday his country will not accept any security deal with the United States unless it contains specific dates for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces.

It is one thing to support a local government that wants you there, it is quite another when they want you out.

Roll out the ticker tape and strike up the band.  If the Iraqi's want to deal with it themselves, let em.

**Fast reply**

quote:

“The negotiations are continuing with the American side,” Mr al-Maliki said, reflecting the desire of many MPs to wait until a new administration is in the White House, and Iraq’s provincial elections are over, before making any deal. The agreement would govern such issues as immunity for US troops from prosecution, the use of Iraqi airspace, and which side takes operational control for military missions against insurgents.

It seems that democracy and the political season is upon both nations... Oh wait, Iraq is a quagmire and there is no way that things will get better.  Hopefully, those blind little doves that have been spewing that garbage, can at least now be intellectually honest enough to admit that there has been amazing progress in Iraq, including the strengthening of their own political freedoms.  Just something to ponder.

It seems that the White House's response pretty much says it all.

We have invaded and occupied Iraq. What the Iraqi Government says doesn't matter, because we're holding the entire nation hostage.

They TOLD US TO LEAVE. What else needs to be discussed?

Game Over, Man. Game Over.

Not to let the facts get in the way of a good story, but:

quote:

The Iraqi timeline proposal made public Tuesday appears to set an outer limit, requiring U.S. forces to fully withdraw five years after the Iraqis take the lead on security nationwide — though that precondition could itself take years.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080708/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq

So, after the Iraqi government gains control of the county's security, they'd like foreign military presence eliminated in half a decade. This is not a request for withdrawl, and it adheres to only the loosest conceivable definition of "timetable."

As I recall, Bush himself said that "When the Iraqis ask us to leave, we'll leave." (I think they even have this on video!

So, is he going to come up with another pack of lies, to keep us there... ?

We went in for WMD... never found.
We said we were there to liberate the Iraqi people... they have been liberated.
We said we were there to stop Saddam... okay, he's dead.
We said we were there to keep the Iraquis from being pulled into civil war... they did it anyway.
Now we're there to give the new government a chance to establish itself... they are asking us to go.

Again, I ask... what flimsy ass excuse is "Team Bush"going to try and sell us this time?

The Iraqi government wants to assert control over Iraqi territory.  And in fact they have assumed control over 9 of the 18 provinces in the country.

Sounds to me as if the "surge" strategy of the past year or so might actually have succeeded.

Oh wait, we're not supposed to use words like "success" in connection with Iraq, are we? Oops!  My bad.

Actually, quite well.  I don't foresee all 140,000+ troops coming home within the month, but if the current trend continues, withdrawing from Iraq in good order should definitely be the order of the day.

We have a friend in the amry, he was in Iraq for two years, and just signed up for another six. According to him, the army is currently building a base there, not the little pup tent ones, a full military base. Though that doesn't mean we are keeping everyone over there. He said they are slowly working on withdrawing, somewhere near a three year process. However, picking up everything and leaving is not an option as they will be attacked if they dare retreat.

Our opinion on the east is Mum, but we asked him when he came back for a couple of days.

"Successful occupation 101" by the US army. Nice job: the 'surge' worked pretty fucking well.

Yesterday woks for me ...how about You?

That would be suicide.  The Iraqis still have to assume control over 9 more provinces at the very least.  If they haven't done so, leaving would breed the very chaos and instability the Iraqis AND the US forces have worked so hard to overcome.

Withdrawal in good order is as beneficial to the Iraqis as it is to the US, and it will not happen overnight.

I can't wait to see the reactions to Obama returning from his trip and saying "After my visit, I have reevaluated the situation on the ground, the progress is undeniable, and I will follow the advice of the commanders on the ground".  Or something very similar.

Since I fully expect Obama to "edit" his website after he comes back, to reflect the latest "change", this is how he views the surge strategy today.
quote:

The Problem

The Surge: The goal of the surge was to create space for Iraq's political leaders to reach an agreement to end Iraq's civil war. At great cost, our troops have helped reduce violence in some areas of Iraq, but even those reductions do not get us below the unsustainable levels of violence of mid-2006. Moreover, Iraq's political leaders have made no progress in resolving the political differences at the heart of their civil war.

See Thadius I agree with You here,as a matter of fact I allways get pissed off when Superior Civilian Authority bows to the wishes of the subserviant armed force Commanders...take advice from, listen to their concerns and to their stated needs in order to  complete the mission  they are charged to do...But surrender Civiliian Control to non -elected officers I don't think that's actually legal, as a matter of fact that sounds like derreliction of Duty
