I wonder how many buses the DNC will have to charter in to get that thing filled.

You know....Hitler had the same kind of insecure personality. He felt he needed to present himself to the public in front of massive numbers of people in order to give the perception of strength, unity, and power. It worked for Nazis, now it looks like it will work for the Democrats.

I hope it rains....

The funny part is all of the media outlets that are in love with him, that now have to scrap most of the work they have done over the last 12 months setting up their various sound and video solutions.  I guess this might be his economic stimulus package, it will require the use of double the cameras and sound equipment, oh and double the crews to cover both locations.

Amused,
Thadius

What does he hope to accomplish with this?

75,000....impressive, but there are 300 MILLION Americans.

Have to admit, it is rather funny to see the media inconvenienced by their fair-haired boy.  They made him....wonder if they'll get pissy and start to unmake him?

The symbolism is going to be over the top.  First, the day scheduled for the acceptance speech, is the anniversary of Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech.  He will also be the first to do so (outdoors) since Kennedy.  The advertising and free ticket giveaways are already beginning.  It will be interesting to see if any blocks of anti-Obama types will get in, and if they do, will the mainstream press ignore them or give them coverage.

It should make for a great spectacle either way.

SophiaCorrupted -> RE: Obama to accept nomination in football stadium (7/8/2008 6:02:00 PM)

Haha...so wait.

It's a BAD thing when more people are interested in the political process and want to see him speak? It's a BAD thing that they're allowing more people to get involved?  Barack is only supposed to allow the democratic elite who can secure spots to see him speak?

I can't see how you can possibly fault him for this. I'd really like an answer to any of these questions.

Why not slam Obama for grandstanding?  Playing rock star isn't exactly the most Presidential of moves.

No matter how much people prattle about "issues", the reality of the world is that leadership is first and foremost an expression of character.  Turning the convention topsy turvy just to give himself a bigger spotlight is not exactly a positive testimony about Obama the man.

Tacky is tacky, no matter which side of the aisle it's on.

Watching a guy read from a teleprompter is being "involved" how, exactly?  That's not being involved, that's being entertained.

Hmmm.....of course, by upending the media who'd planned to broadcast his speech to the country, he's not discomfiting anyone who couldn't travel to Denver to see the show live.

Of course, since he's doing the rock star bit, maybe he'll tell the media to take a powder and do the speech on pay per view.  Bet he could raise a ton of cash then.

Nah, theater is theater.  Grandstanding is grandstanding.  Tacky is Tacky.  Obama is all three.

kittinSol -> RE: Obama to accept nomination in football stadium (7/8/2008 6:11:38 PM)

Hilariously, for the past two months, it's the Republicans of the boards who have been the most obsessed with the goings-on at the Democratic party. Perhaps you enjoy gatecrashing the party, you naughty boys, you :-p.

Thadius -> RE: Obama to accept nomination in football stadium (7/8/2008 6:14:34 PM)

Just a little side note.

The farmers almanac says there is a 30% chance of rain.  Just found that tid bit interesting.

Trust me, kittin, if I was in the Denver area, I for sure would be in that stadium, with a "NOBAMA" banner waving proudly wherever I could get in front of a camera.

I need to be entertained, too, ya know! [;)]

Yeah CL and the way to win an election in America is to be very quiet and dignified ,maybe he could go off and meditate or something....Now we are supposed to believe the Republicans win all those election with quiet dignified politicking...please the level of partisianship slanting done with this post is off the chart

People come out, they hear his message, they are more inclined to vote come primary season. This event looks like it's just taking down one more barrier between politicians and voters. And how is attending a political rally NOT being "involved"? You're showing support for your candidate. These events are just glorified political handjobs anyway.

Packing the arena with who? Americans. Democrats. That's the whole point! They're SUPPOSED to want to "pack" the arena. Even if it isn't people who are interested in politics, they're getting their message out. This is what political parties do, they convince people to listen to them. That's no secret, and it is a good thing that they're "packing" the arena. Did you expect them to not try to get people to show up?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this, but I'm pretty sure the media is still going to manage to get out to Denver and broadcast this speech, even if it costs them a little more.

ALL politics is theatre. That's why it's politics. This just happens to be theatre that supports actual human beings and their participation in the process  Allowing more people to hear a speech live is REALLY the last thing I'd ever complain about.

Have you ever seen a nomination convention that WASN'T over the top? It is ALL theatre.

No, the way to win an election is to lead.  Standing in an arena surrounded by 75,000 bussed-in worshipers straight out of Central Casting is ego, not leadership.

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama to accept nomination in football stadium (7/8/2008 6:35:13 PM)

No CL the way to lead is to win the election, you sort of put the cart in front of the horse....common mistake ...just reverse them you'll be fine

Actually it will be closer to 95,000, they can seat people on the field. [;)]

He's pulled in crowds like that already on the campaign....not without reason that he'd pull in big numbers for the convention.

GWB had screened crowds for his campaigns, and the protesters were kept well away from the most likely press areas.

First off, it is the elites who pull his strings. The Democratic party is no different than the GOP. It is controlled, funded, and operated by rich elitists. This stadium thing is theatrics for entertaining the common folk in prime time.
Perhaps if we dumped the political parties and had only independents running for president, you would get some honest political campaigning instead of this puppet show we are forced to enduer every 4 years.

And this is not people becoming interested in the political process. It is people becoming brainwashed and mislead into thinking socialism and big government is going to be the answer to all of America's problems without providing information to make such serious decisions. I'd bet anyone some real hard cash that the vast majority of the population would fail an American history test. Most dont have the slightest idea how the government works. Most dont even know what they are voting for. Most people will go to the polls this November and not vote for a person but will vote for a political party.

People are not thinking. Obama has zero experience. No foreign policy experience. No experience with the economy. He hasn't run or managed a business. He has yet to serve a full term in the Senate. He's done absolutely nothing but you want to hand him the keys to the country during a recession? In the middle of two wars? And people like Wesley Clark has the audacity to sit there and bash John McCain's military experience? While at the same time ignore Obama's lack of experience in anything at all?
And why vote Obama? For change? Change what? What's he going to change? How's he going to change it?

What is Obama going to do when Al-Queda strikes again? What is he going to do when Iran starts a nuclear arms race with Israel? What is going to do when he pulls out of Iraq and the government there collapses into civil war? Why wont the media networks ask him these questions? Why? Because they know he doesn't know how to answer them.
