I got an e-mail last night about my favorite little cousin.  Apparently, on Sunday morning, he and his replicant were at home alone, sleeping.  His wife and step-replicant were not there.  At about 2:30 in the morning, he heard someone in his house and he got up so that they wouldn't hurt the replicant.  He chased them out of the house, and then they hit him in the face with his own laptop, and ran.  When they hit him, it made him fall backwards and hit his head on the concrete patio - now thinks that it's May of 2004 and he's getting ready to graduate high school.  He doesn't remember his wife, or either of their replicants (or anyone else that he's met in the last 4-6 years) - he's functioning at a very diminished level mentally.  I have no way to contact them, because their computer was stolen and I don't have their phone number ... I'm basically freaking out right now.

I just hate this because, first of all, he's probably the smartest of my cousins, and now he's not capable of much of anything.  He's also one of the few of my extended family that I actually like. He's a great guy - he's a youth pastor at his church, he loves both of the replicants as if they were his own, he goes out of his way to help whomever he can ... and then two little punk-ass thieves have to come in and steal from him and hurt him.  I hope that they get caught quickly and charged with everything that the prosecuter can come up with ...

If I had the time, I'd drive up and see what I could do to help - but I just don't have the time (they live about 3 hrs away and with my work schedule for the next few weeks ... not gonna happen).

So, anyway, this is my vent and my stress of the moment, thank you all for reading *sigh*

Damn it, that's really awful.  I hope he makes a full recovery in time - did he get a prognosis?

My first cousin is in the midst of battling esophageal cancer.  It sucks big-time when someone we care about is dealing with something so huge and there's not a hell of a lot you can do.

SweetDommes, he (and you) will be in my prayers and thoughts. There are incredible strides made on brain injuries, this could just be temporary. I hope things get better and that he makes a full recovery.

According to the neurologist, it should just be temporary - he has a severe concussion, but no bleeding was visible in the MRI or CAT scan.  I've got all my fingers and toes crossed and have been praying like mad.

NeedingMore - I'll be praying for you and your cousin too.  Cancer is never a good thing to deal with *hugs*

As LRF said, there have been great advances in the medical understanding and treatment of brain injuries.  My thoughts go out to you, your cousin and his family.

Thank you, SweetDomme - the same goes for you and yours.  My prayers are with you.  His diagnosis sounds very positive, but how incredibly scary.

SweetDommes, I have a dear friend who had a terrible brain injury.  In the weeks after being hurt, she had no short-term memory and other very serious issues as well.  I am happy to say that she has made an amazing recovery.  I hold out hope that it will be this way for your cousin as well.

Hugs, love and healing to you and your family,
Mss

Thanks everyone

NeedingMore - I agree ... I've seen so many in my nursing clinicals and when I was working in the hospital and nursing home that, yeah, they were getting better and regaining function, but it was soooo slow.  In the meantime, what are they supposed to do?  Heather is the only one that can work right now, although I know that the church will continue supporting them the best they can (both the members, and the church itself - I know they'll keep paying him at least part of his salary ... but can a church afford to do that for 2-3 years if that's what it takes??).

For right now, they basically have to have a babysitter for him, plus the replicants.  I don't know if the older one is old enough to be capable of taking care of him and the other replicant.  I'm going to try and call today and offer to come up for a day or two during my vacation next week, but ... that's over a week away from when I can do it.

I really want to track those two boys down and do some damage - and this, coming from a person who hasn't hit anyone in anger in the last 25 years or so ...

Needing more, a couple of years ago I went through a very scary health problem and the most humbling thing for me was seeing how much people cared for me.  You may think you are not doing a lot however never underestimate how important your love and concern for your cousin is and how much it means to them.

trauma to the head will do that and worse.   when 2 guys beat eachother senseless they aim for the head.....

in the meantime- limit noise, light stimuli to the subject. nothing to extreme.

if this were in my life i would learn EVERYTHING there is to know on the topic. use the net to learn...

also- the kids diet ild watch that - for now...  im not sure what for...

watch for his spine too.  each disk goes to an orgen or motor fuction with the hieght of it IN THE SKULL.

i had a sever concusion- it took a full year to recover. [i had my head bashed in by an ex]

i recall being very sensitive to sinus things.....    even today I have black outs- but I think that is due to spine injury , not blows to the head.

as to the ex- I dont have too many regrets....it had to climax - as it was the way for me to LIVE.... long story short he blamed me for something and as I could not risk him winning his court setllement and going to philly  with a ton of wierd drugs THEN coming after me....
anyhow it is in the past now....

I'm sure that Heather will be watching him closely - she's a nurse too.

I just wish that we lived closer to each other so that I could help more.

SweetDommes, well that sucks!
I hope your cousin gets better quickly!
Why can't some miscreants break into my house sometime?

Yeah, I agree - break into my house sometime ... no guns yet, but we do have some rather large and territorial dogs that would love to take a few chunks out.  The closest we had was someone tried to steal gas from our cars a few weeks ago.

They must have a strong community.  Perhaps the church can arrange for babysitters and whatever the family needs?  When someone is sick or going through something in our circle, others always chip in, bringing food, helping out however is needed .... sometimes it takes time to get something like that organized too.
