first off, bipolar isn't something you 'have' like chicken pox. it is a behavior (granted, it's oftentimes a maladaptive behavior), not a disease.

You need to do your homework because you're contradicting quite a bit of the research that I've read.

Being an asshole is a behavior issue.  Bipolar is a serious mental illness.

I've done my 'homework'.

then you are reading the wrong textbook, Ace.

Bipolar is an illness. Since you are so fond of quoting the DSM i suggest you READ it. As per the American Psychiatric Assoc (the group the publishes the DSM) Bipolar disease is listed as a mental illness.

A bipolar slave visited me for play. I had slapped him and he completely went off. I had to usher him out. Reminded me of Mike Tyson who suffers from that condition.

I would love to see him again, but only if I am assured that he will be more stable.

I wouldn't pay that person any attention.  That's like asking someone how he walks with his leg cut off....why a prosthesis of course.  And for someone with bipolar...correct management and understanding.  For someone with diabetes?  The correct diet and medications.  For someone with depression?  understanding, encouragement, and the right help.  How bout with UMs?  Discretion and tolerance.  I could go on all day.  How does anyone do anything?  None of us are completely unafflicted.  We all have something that may be considered a negative or a hindrence in our lives.

This guy sounds a bit uneducated and narrow minded to me.

Ditto.

NEWSFLASH: PEOPLE WITH THE SAME DISORDER ARE NOT ALL EXACTLY THE SAME
They are actually individuals! Who would have thought?

i am bi-polar, manic depressive. But i am still submissive.  True, i have my up and downs.  But i am also medically treated for this disorder.  i will be the first to admit, being bi-polar manic depressive is very hard at times.. and sometimes, due to the disorder, i slip up with my Master, and make huge mistakes.  But my Master knows where my heart lies.  and i strive to please him in ever way possible.  Some days are harder than others.  If someone tells me, i cant be a submissive, because of my mental disorder, i just shrug it off.  Each have their own opinions.  Only we know the truth about ourselves.

Theoretically,

Its possible to have bi-polar disorder and yet be perfectly fine....

Most people surprisingly aren't always happy with what they have: (grass is always greener on the other side of the fence phenom).

The primary key to being perfectly fine is to have a safety net set up for yourself, and to know thyself (have wisdom).

Without proper family support, a broken psychiatric system ( bi-polar/schizo psychiatrist), and possible addictions ( SUGAR / nutrasweet, other legal substances, and illegal)....

Its easy to fall back into the same ol' ruts....

One primary thing is to think on who is your REAL friends....

REAL friends:

ALLOW people to change over time....they don't think they have to stay in a box they devised for them....

Know their friends well enough to be honest with them, and blunt: "Hey man, you seem off your game today...just my assessment..."

3rd, and most importantly: Know that your feelings are just the sum of all your thoughts. Look at things from a glass is half full instead of half empty perspective.

4th: FOCUS on mental balance, that will focus you away from emotional balance, learn to not wear your emotions on your sleeve. Emotional balance is simple in concept, but hard to master; try not to be swayed by individual events in your life.....EMOTIONAL BALANCE...

Its natural for humans to die. Its unnatural for humans to live forever......BORN TO DIE....

speaking of dying, it wouldn't be cool if GOD off'ed himself, so people think suicide is the answer? GOD commiting suicide is this universe ceasing to exist, at least as we know it.....

Human and life understanding is that the goal of survival and law of the jungle is (to) survive as long as you can, from the smallest living thing to the biggest.....

Bigno. There is no catch all answer here. Depends on the person and how their bi-polar was managed. If managed well, then I'd at least look at the girl. If managed badly I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

Even more an issue IMO with someone supposedly on the other side of the Dynamic. But again if it is controlled well it should be copable with, if it isn't controlled well.... the person can't control themself so they have no business trying to control another.

AlexandraLynch -> RE: can a sub/slave serve with bipolar disorder? (5/11/2009 11:49:25 AM)

I am considering a submissive that is bipolar. It has got about the weight of taking on a submissive who is diabetic, as far as I am concerned. But my best friend and my vanilla girlfriend are both bipolar, so I am pretty familiar with it.

ShaharThorne -> RE: can a sub/slave serve with bipolar disorder? (5/11/2009 5:00:56 PM)

I do have bipolar with psychotic features. As long as I take my meds, I am balanced out, though right now I want to be raging with anger and drowning myself in a pint of ice cream (relationship problem, hopefully he contacts me soon so it can be resolved and I get my corsets back).

Shahar
