Hiyas!

I'm going to be in Austin next week and I was hoping for some recommendations on good dining places.

Not super expensive but something around $20.00 a plate would be great. The only style of food that I am not fond of is Japanese cuisine and that is only because I am not familiar with it and would need a guide lol.

C'mon that's only two and a half hours. Give DA a chance, unless he always cooks at home and lives on gunpowder and dried eggs. Probably only cooks when he is not beheading something or dealing with the dogshit guy.

Please allow 24 hours when looking for a response here. Some of us have only certain times to get on the net. At least us nuts. If you want a response from normal people, it may take longer.

Oh yes its going to be hot there LH, it will be interesting to see if I end up melting somewhere on a sidewalk. It will feel good though! I've had enough of this chilly/humid weirdness. I'm not positive but I thought the bats were only super active during the spring? I have seen them though, a beautiful sight as they spiral up and out into the night.

Yes Term I am impatient about this trip, impatient and excited.

I haven't really had the time to do much planning on this visit so now it is a matter of getting it all done in just a couple of days.

Don't really know what your tastes are in dining but try Maria's Taco Express. It was featured on Diners, Drivins & Dives tv show. There's gotta be many tex-mex and bbq places in Austin..do a google search for reviews. $20 a plate would be pretty pricey where I live for just a normal meal but maybe not in Austin.

Hmmm... Austin... Heart of Texas.... well, me, personally, I'd go for Mexican and Tex-Mex, because you won't find any better in the US than in Texas.

Fonda San Miguel - it's been over ten years for me, but they had some very good real Mexican stuff. IMNSHO, I did a few things much better, but I haven't cooked them in years. Tamales are a pain in the ass to make.

Chuy's - probably as good Tex-Mex as you'll find.

Me, I'd go for Oaxacan Tamaleo, because 1) I've been to Oaxaca twice, as a food tourist, so I'm familiar with the cuisine, and love it love it love it, and 2) They have Pollo en Mole Rojo. It's almost impossible to find anything except Mole Poblano out of a jar in the US.

I'd go to Sazon, too; they have huitlacoche, also known as the Mexican Truffle. Had a fantastic taco in Oaxaca with fresh epazote, huitlacoche, and queso anajo. Wow.

Enjoy the BBQ, ribs, pulled pork, country fried steak, mashed potatoes with creamy gravy, and autographed Willie Nelson pictures while you can. Most of your Steak n BBQ joints on I-35 should suit your taste just fine without having to bust more than a $50 budget that includes drinks, alcohol, apitizer, main course, and desert for two.

Although it's not fancy, Whataburger can be a nice treat before you head back home. No one should leave TX without having a Whataburger experience.

Term, Im in HOUSTON not AUSTIN. If she were going to Houston I could reccommend two dozen places , but I've only been to Austin twice in my life. The first time I ate in a titty bar called The Landing Strip and the second time we went to Hooters.

FYI though - I rarely cook as it doesnt pay to cook for one. I can go to a BBQ joint and get a 3 meat plate for $7.95, a tacquiera for $3.50, a shitload of asian buffets for $9 or less, Mama Mias to get any of about 40 pasta dishes ranging from baked ziti to stuffed canneloni to eggplant parmesan to shrimp scampi with salad and garlic knots for less than $10 etc.... Pretty much the only time I ever cook is if Im entertaining someone or having a party otherwise I go out or order in...

Sorry I cant be more helpful camille, but Austin's not my stomping grounds....

DA, I see you are still a fan of the chow hall version of dining. LOL

While I agree that it often is as cheap to eat out at certain places as to cook for one, of course, that's not always the case. I happen to love to cook and that is a pleasure in itself. With some careful shopping and planning, one can cook for oneself and eat well and inexpensivelly.

Camille, sorry for going off topic. I'm sorry, but never having been to Austin, I can't recommend any places there. Nevertheless, I hope you have a wonderful time there.

Goog lord does anyone eat healthy in Austin? After reading the tex-mex chinese buffet descriptions I just want to make a huge salad and have some sushi.

Cjan. compared to Navy mystery meat (I THINK it might be ground donkey cock - but nobody knows for sure) the places I cited are gourmet cuisine LOL Eating lunch (and having dessert he he he ) in a strip club is a Texas business tradition. Surprisingly, the "under $10" places I go are actually pretty good. I mean hell smoked brisket, smoked sausage, and smoked ham with two sides and hot cornbread for $7.95 ??? Sure beats Burger King! LOL

I love to cook as well, and will do so if I am entertaining... Its just I spend so much time working that more often than not I just swing past the Cattledrive BBQ, or Chilos Seafood, or Sudies Catfish Shack, or Mama Mias or whatever to grab something... I spend an ungdly amount of time in front of the computer... My posts here are made in between pulling weather, checking flight plans, waiting for weight and balance, waiting on e-mails, etc... I probably work 70-80 hours a week so I dont have much time to cook. :(

My sister in law loves Chuy's, and I know there is a Pappadeaux's in Austin, great seafood there.

Avoid Whataburger unless you're getting a breakfast biscuit.
